As a wrestler I had the opportunity to work with many coaches who have influenced me as a wrestler, and now as a coach I've also met many people that I aspire to live up to when it comes to being able to motivate and inspire kids to want to build their program.
As a wrestler:
Dean Sheats, Tobie Waldeck, and my father Jack Deyoe taught me the funamentals and what hard-work was about.
Kevin Klemm and East Kansas fixed alot of errors in my game and made me understand what wrestling like a champion could be like.
Merrick Wiles, Curtis Simons, Dennis Charbonneau, all gave me a lot to work with as a Cadet National Team member.
As a coach:
I have always considered Larry Gabel, Doug Broadfoot, Gary Ulmer, Jody Thompson, as the type of coach that I'd like to become one day. There are many others that belong in this category, but the men above in both lists I have personally seen them set aside their own ego's for kids, no matter how difficult it was. Taking the time, building the sport, and promoting it all so positively is such a difficult thing but the state of Kansas is fortunate to have coaches such as these men to make our state a powerful wrestling contender.
The fact that we have such great coaches in this state, and it is continuously getting better all the time, is obvious in how far the sport has come in the past 20 years. Kansas Wrestling is respected- still without enough college representation, but respected from the states that gain the fruits of our labors.
