This poll seems a little misleading. Arent 6U able to participate in the big dance if they choose to wrestle 8U?

If enough parents want them in and we can find a way to find the space, not make it a 3 day tournament, cover the cost, etc. Let them in.

95% of the 6yr olds put in that pressure however will not be wrestling in HS. The other 5% will be total studs. The problem is everyone thinks their kid is in that 5%.

Do not however cut the weights for the 10's and 12's as these are some of the most rapid learning years. Once you get to 14U if they wanted to go with Jr.High or HS wieghts that would seem logical, and surely for 16U.

Just my opinion,

SlamBam

I believe I was told a couple years ago that the wrestler had to wrestle in the state tournament in their own age bracket, they can not move up. For example if my son is 8/U and will have no wrestles at state (heavyweight this happens, he has to just take 1st and not move up to 10/U. Am I correct on this?
If so, why do they allow a wrestler in 6/U to wrestle 8/U?

I beleive Justin Henderson won state without wrestling a match in the 8&U being the only one in his bracket.

Shudog, don't you think it is a little unfair asking the 6u to wrestle up if they want a chance at going to state? Kids that are a couple of years older are not only more experienced but are stronger. I doubt you would find many 8u that would want to wrestle 10u at state, or 10u that would want to wrestle 12u. Nor should they be asked to. This is for the kids, remember? I thought the idea is to keep wrestling fun, with little pressure on them. My 6u got to watch his older brother and peers wrestle at state last year. He would love nothing more than to participate in it. I assure you if 6u was permitted he would make it, and place in the top three. But with attitudes like yours, he will not get the chance. Unless, of course, he wrestles kids 2 years older than him. Hopefully in the future, these little guys will get the recognition that they deserve.

I figured the poll would be in favor of having the 6U kids at state but 61% to 39%. Fairly one sided. Seems only fair to include them to me. There are some really good kids at that age that love the sport. Let them feel good about themselves, sitting right next to the older kids at state. It seems like this is a big topic every year. I have never heard what the true reason is. if there are clubs that dont want 6U at the state tourney then dont sign kids up for it, but dont stop it from happening.

4MyBoys, So you know, I voted for adding 6U. I to had a son who could have wrestled up but chose to wrestle only to a district tourney held for 6U. There wasn't even the Ottawa State at that time. All Im saying is that the 6U do have the chance to wrestle if they can qualify in 8U. I too feel this is not fair. I think it would be great if there is addequate room and help to add the 6U.

Do you think the people in charge care about the pole? I don't. There will never be 6&U untill state is moved out of Topeka.

The "people in charge" probably dont care about the poll. Elected official's represent the people not themselves. There opinions should not matter.

USA Kansas Wrestling is a Not for Profit Business and the IRS helps regulate rules and regulations for these types of organizations. They have to have By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation. The organization it-self has to have rules and regulations. The best way to get involved in your district is become the district director or an officer representing your district. Once you have proven to your district and its members that you can be a person in charge they will vote you the Grand Pubba. You then must attend all the meetings required by the district and state bodies governing your district. You must volunteer on several fronts to earn the district members vote because each district has a rank and order member. These are not elected officials like in city, state, and county government where you go to the polls. This is run like a business.
You have to go to the meetings and the topics of interest are brought to the meetings and voted on.
In other words the topic has to be on the agenda and they only allow for so much time to discuss the topic and it is voted on.

Of course, Mr. Church Sr. knows very little about who may or may not favor Six and Under at the State Tournament.

District II has shown support for years for this endeavor. District I has shown lukewarm support and District III and District IV have shown very little support.

At present, a study has been undertaken by "the people in charge" to review possible weight class changes to perhaps allow for this change and perhaps allow for more participants to wrestle on full size mats.

"The people in charge" are cognizant of the movement to include Six and Under, however the last vote taken by the membership of the State Body was overwhelmingly not in favor of this change.

wrestlingparents,

You are correct that the Kids rules do not allow you to wrestle outside of your age group. If you look at the rules , you will see that there is not a "10 & Under" class. The age group that is commonly referred to as 10 & Under is actually the "9 & 10" age group under the rules. However, there is an "8 & Under" division, which allows six-year-olds (and younger) to compete in this age group.

The wording used to describe the age groups was done by the state body specifically to allow any wrestlers younger than nine on August 31 to compete in the 8 & Under division. The titles for the other age groups were intended to facilitate the rule that prohibits wrestlers from competing outside of their age division for the state qualifying tournaments.

Hope this helps.

I wonder if it is the space, time, headache, money. It cant be the pressure. These little guys go at it hard every weekend. The kids that can't handle the pressure will not make it to Topeka. Charge them double and hide them in the back room and try it. Fill the building and the parking lot. Sell the t-shirts and have all the kids at Kids State Championship. Stick it to them but don't exclude them.

I would much rather watch a 6 and under B bracket than any age of HWT "WRESTLERS" push each other around until one falls on top the other. It is entertainment but it sure would not be called wrestling.

Is the wording on the 8U division different because USAW doesn't recognize that age group? If so, how and why did the 8U age group come into being?

Of course Richard Sayler knows everything. If you don't beleive me just ask him. What I do know is Richard can't get that chip off his shoulder from when my son made his nephew cry at the Kapaun vs South dual in I think 1995 when Sayler was the 119 lb 5a defending state champ!! Plus I think I have been around long enough to know that there is more than enough intrest for 6&U state. If we can get the STATE BODY to hold the vote a better day than X-mas morning or a similar day like it. Have a nice day Richard .

All of the state body meetings that I have attended have been the first week of November or the last week of October - most of the time on a Sunday. There may have been a football game - but not Christmas morning.
Actual Dates of Meetings:
November 5, 2000
November 4, 2001
November 3, 2002
October 31, 2004
