I don't know if it is appropriate to single a seventh grader out in a forum but I think this young man deserves some special recognition. I first learned of his accomplishments in an earlier topic on 12 & under 130 pounders for this year. I researched to see how he had done in previous State tournaments. This is pretty impressive.
1998 1st 8/67
1999 1st 8/73
2000 1st 10/82
2001 1st 10/95
2002 1st 12/110
2003 1st 12/140 (Unfortunately, he won against my son's teammate EJ Walter in this year's final)
Marvio may even win next year as an 8th grader against the 9th graders. I know I would not want to put any money against him.
You hear how Tiger Woods is golf's Chosen One. I'm beginning to think that about Marvio.
I first had my son watch him at the Liberty Nationals and then at this year's Topeka tournament. I would recommend any parent of a younger wrestler whose child is in the approximate age and weight groups that Marvio won above to take the opportunity to watch him wrestle. He is quite an athlete and a pleasure to watch. He does things on the mat you just do not see bigger wrestlers do. If you are going to Nationals he is entered in the Schoolboy division at 140.
There are two other Kansas wrestlers who I would also recommend in this age group and approximate weight group to watch this weekend. I believe they are entered at 125 for this weekend's Nationals. Jared Hensley is now a three time defending State Champion. I got to see him for the first time this weekend. He is another great athlete and wrestler. Also watch Aldon Isenberg who finished second to Jared. I believe Aldon won the Cliff Keen National tournament in November this year. Aldon is an excellent technique wrestler who has some great takedown moves.
