As for not liking teams, 80% of the officials refereeing the regional have not seen most the teams there, and furthermore weren't hating on anybody, I would love to here the picking on Clay Center stories you have.

Sportsfan,
I totally agree with you on what you said. When I said that it is a "normal" part of sports, I mean it happens and most people just shrug it off. But when a spectator starts verbally abusing officials or even coaches or visa-versa this is above and beyond what can be shrugged off.

I thought the Rossville Regional was ran very well. I especially liked the way they wrestled the finals with the lights out and the wrestlers spotlighted. Also the hospitality room was terrific. Good Job Rossville

I totally agree with Mom160 the brackets from the Eureka Regionals were so AWESOME! Quite a bit of toil went into making the Eureka Regionals one of the best we've been to in the last 3 years!
Thanks Eureka!

In my eyes the refs in Chapman were not the issue. The problem was seeing SWEAZY run around in a tie all day saturday trying to look imporant!
Great JOB Chapman!!

One very important factor in determining how good a tournament is: the hospitality room. Hoisington's is the best. Steak on Saturday Night!

Rossville did a great job except for the fact they did not have a board to post team scores. They posted scores maybe 3 times the whole tournament on a overhead projector. Thought they did a great job outside of that.
Lots of competitive matches. 3 four seeds came out as regional champs. You dont see that very often.

Good point Mike, the hospitality roon is very crucial. your journalism never lets us down, but in all seriousness(i know thats not how you spell that), you do a good job covering the area and pay attention to whats going on, i want to see a mike holiday state prediction board on here.

The tourny at shawnee height was smooth and hospitible... The brackets and finalist introduction were alittle disappointing... I think regionals should be used to highlight the best kids in each region...I think all regions should put on a show for the qualifiers, not all kids are goin to be state placers so the little think to make the event special will effect a lot more kids.
There were some great matches and wrestling. Lansing was very dominate from top to bottom and of course KC Turner was solid as well. Both teams are primed to dual it out next week for the championship.
Best matches that the crowd got into was prob the 140lbs final between Flynn and Brooks... 140 was stacked with quality wrestlers. Brooks has been wrestling the last 3 weeks on one arm and gave him a battle but just couldn't finish the match as the pain was too much... Also the 160 match with Reed and Bailes was a tough high scoring match for big guys in a regional final I think the final score was 20-14.
The biggest suprise was Walker tech fall over Singleton in the 2nd period. Singleton was seeded over Walker and I believe is a 2 time state placer.
Also get well soon to Posey from Wyandotte who I believe sprained his ACL.
Good luck to everyone at state nextweek.

Originally posted by old: Hoisington was terrific. I think this regional will bag a good number of medals this weekend. I would agree, Hoisington ran a very good regional, but I have a few complaints. The officiating was below what you would expect at a regional tournament. There were a few calls that could have cost someone a trip to state. I could have done without the lady from Smith Center. If you are going to have steaks for the workers and the coaches, make sure the smoke doesn't drift in the gym for all of us poor, hungry spectators to smell. I really like the TV in the commons with the Olympics. I got to watch my favorite winter sport, curling. It's one of the only sports where you can be fat and old and still be in the Olympics.

Rossville regional, there was one typical call that mad me a little angry. Here's the situation. 275 pound match to get into state. One kid is up 2-1 going to the third. he is on bottom and they struggle. he ends up climbing out under the guy and is close to out of bounds. he drags the other kid into the circle and jumps on top of him like any other would do in the situation. he was called for unsportamanlike and the other guy one and went to state and ended his senior year. That is crap

I will agree that is an iffy call, but wouldn't have pulling him far enough for the takedown have done it instead of all the way to the center. Granted I have pulled someone all the way in myself and did not get dinged for it I am lucky I guess, but was pulling him all the way back to the middle overdoing it? That is a judgement call, you can't argue that.

Also the Russell hospitality room was pretty decent. On friday afternoon/evening they had fried chicken mashed potatoes and gravy rolls and something else I can't remember and then on saturday they had lasagna pork chops green beans scalloped potatoes (kinda) rolls. It wasn't the best it sounds but it was better than other's I'd bet. Steaks are hard to beat, nice show by Coach Schmidt.

I'm looking at Eagle125 post and i'm trying to see where he said one dragged the other to the middle! I'm not for sure but I think he meens just inside the circle which I have seen 12 million times over the years so Bronco tell me, what would be your judgement on that? I wasn't there so I didn't see it but what is the call for draggin a guy just inside the circle and what ref would watch one wrestler drag another clear to the middle?

The guy who was thrown out at Oberlin needed it. The last time this ref. threw him out the man threw his hat at the mat after his son was beat. Yes the ref. made close calls in both matches. Still no excuse to act the way he did.
On a positive note the sons of this man have always displayed great sportsmanship anytime I have seen them wrestle.

Did any other Regional use a spotlight in the Finals? McPherson did, but it was like 50 feet in the air. It kinda ruined the effect being so high (made it like any other light, instead of being special). The Emporia fans HATED it, which was funny to hear their "Turn on the lights!" chant. Also, their smoke machine was pretty pathetic. Hospitality room was okay, but a little small.
On a side note, Is pushing considerred stalling? In the HWT Finals match, one wrestler was being more physical and pushing the other around the mat with 30 seconds left, score tied 1-1. He wasn't trying any moves, just pushing. The other wrestler was trying to pummel inside, but still being pushed backwards, and he was hit for a 2nd stalling call and lost 2-1. To me, one was trying to wrestle and the other was stalling by pushing like a Sumo.

One thing i saw not called was hanging on the ankle, i personally saw one wrestler on an ankle for 45 secs before it was addressed. It was obviously stalling.
Speaking with the official, he informed me that since it was an inside ankle that it was not stalling but a offensive effort.

Many times, his partner would call him over for a consultation but he would not change his mind. I know that personally, it cost my son a match. My son is young and so he will be back but still you don't like to end a season on something like that. As far as a conspiracy between Clay Center and the wrestlers, I did not see anything of this nature. It didn't matter what color the wrestlers wore, if you were unlucky to have that one ref and the match was close, you were in trouble.

Ok, just so i can make this clear, like i said i didnt know if the guy who got thrown out deserved it, sounds like he did and i will take everyones word. The time i was talking about before when the guy did not deserve to be thrown out was at the hoisington regional 2 years ago, Broncowrestler was there and knows the situation and knows that the man at that regional did not deserve to be thrown out. And huckleberry i just think you are happy because the guy who got thrown out is from oberlin, HA HA, just kiddin, sounds like he deserved. I just wanted to make sure everyone didnt think i was talking about the same guy both times.
