I for one was pretty disappointed in your tournament. My son has been there many years. For one, my youngest son didn't even get to start wrestling until 2:00 in the afternoon. We didn't get out of there until 5 pm and there were still matches going on. Your club ran out of the nice 1st place medals and started substituting for old medals. One of our kids who placed 3rd received a 4th place medal because you all ran out of the 3rd place medals, and was told that was all that was left. If you want to run a tournament, you have to put alittle money into it.

Clarkmom, I'm very sorry to hear that you were disappointed in our tournament. We had a lot of people tell us yesterday how good it was, how well it was run, and that they would be back again next year. We had more of the same today when we attended the Burlington tournament. I would like to address some of the complaints that you had directly. First, the medal situation was not because we didn't want to "put a little money into our tournament". We had almost 100 more wrestlers than we have had in past years. We also decided when we were bracketing that it was very important to us that each wrestler receive a medal for their efforts. Due to this decision and the larger number of wrestlers, we had many more brackets than we had anticipated. Since we had extended our deadline to Wednesday night to accommodate clubs unable to practice and take entries due to the weather, we did not have a true count of wrestlers and brackets until Thursday morning. We ordered stock medals from a trophy company in ElDorado, and picked them up Friday. Had I even anticipated that there would be a problem or complaint with the fact that our medals were different, I would have definitely considered trying to keep them more uniform across an age bracket or some other way. Most wrestlers are happy to have a medal, and I feel like it was more important that each wrestler got their own medal yesterday than what exactly they looked like. Secondly, we did not run out of 3rd place medals. If a wrestler that placed 3rd truly received a 4th place medal, I would like to have that person contact me so I can make arrangements to get them a 3rd place medal. I also wish I had been made aware of the fact that that happened so I could have taken care of it yesterday. I was at the head table most of the day and very accessible. Third, I'm not sure exactly who your youngest son is, so I can only guess from your post to the results from last night. If you are addressing the 12 & under 72 lbs. bracket, your son most definitely wrestled before 2 p.m. His first round he had a bye. The second round, he wrestled match number 43. On mat 4, they had 113 matches and were finished with all of their matches early enough for us to move matches from other mats to that mat. If this is not the bracket you are talking about, I apologize. Lastly, I would like to address the comment about the time the tournament was over. I believe you are mistaken about the time you left. We completed wrestling all matches by around 4 p.m. We then awarded team trophies and sportsmanship trophies. Friends of mine live an hour away, stayed for the presentation of the trophies and got home at 5:15 p.m. We are a club that is trying to build up a nice tournament for wrestlers and their families to come to. Again I will say that we had many, many compliments on our tournament yesterday and today. Given your feelings about our tournament and how it was run, I think I would consider skipping it next year.

Is it possible to have a tournament where someone does not get on this forum and complain?
As the lady from Chanute well knows, there are many, many responsibilities with running a successful tournament, and mistakes are always made due to the "human element" being involved.
If a youngster received an incorrect medal, and the color of the medal is SO important, I am certain a simple request to the tournament director prior to leaving the tournament would have been sufficient.
First Derby, then Chanute, now Eureka!
It has been my experience tournament directors are always frazzled by tournament end due to the pressure of running a successful tournament and always attempting to accommodate a reasonable request.
Good luck in the future to all tournament directors, and I hope if all this bashing continues, we will still have tournament directors.

A big thank you to the Eureka Wrestling Club, Angie Lowe, Kim Burtin, their coaches, the parents and the faithful wrestling "family" in Eureka for a great start to our weekend! This was one of the larger tournaments that they have held in recent years, and we were impressed with how well organized and coordinated the tournament was. Everyone we came in contact with was friendly and really worked to make this a good experience for the clubs involved.
We had several "first-time on the mat" wrestlers and "first-time" parents, and I thought this tournament served as a great first experience for them. Plus, we had several experienced wrestlers that needed quality matches this early in the season. We found lots of quality opponents that have had state-level experienced and helped us get better by wrestling them!
I like the Round Robin format. Several tournaments in the state have gone to this format to "ability group" kids where-ever possible. We had a few kids that did not get to wrestle until late morning/early afternoon that is the only danger that you run into with a Round Robin bracket when a 4-man bracket becomes a 3-man bracket and the wrestler that gets the 1st Round "Bye" has to wait for Round #2 before they get to wrestle. However, we are willing to accept this when you know that you are going to get two, three, or maybe four matches in one day with opponents of about the same ability-level.
In 14 years, I have been to MANY traditional-bracket tournaments where wrestlers have one match to get to the finals or even "Bye" into the finals. So each format brings with it a unique set of problems. HOWEVER, most of these problems are based on a common factor that no tournament staff can control: Scratches on the day of the event!
With that said, you do the best you can and hope that at the end of the day you have made 90% of the folks happy!! I think that Eureka was above 90% and should feel good about all of the work they did to host a quality tournament in our area! Thanks to everyone that was involved!! Please know that there are a lot more folks that are thankful for what you have done. However, they just don't always express it in person, through a note, or on this message board!
Doug Vander Linden Burlington Wrestling Club
p.s. Thank you for allowing us to use the "Flip and Scores" for our tournament on Sunday!! Michelle and I loaded ALL of them up in the van after the last match was done just a little before 4 p.m. on Saturday. We then waited with our club coaches for the tournament awards (which were very nice trophies by the way) and we walked out the door at about 4:15 p.m. and got back to Burlington to setup at 5:15 for our tournament. Thanks for wrapping things up quickly!!
p.s.s. Congrats to the Caney Kids Wrestling Club on winning the Club Championship on Saturday. You guys have done a great job with your kids. Keep building, and the Tri-Valley League will be even better for it down the road. Congrats to Eureka on their 2nd place showing and El Dorado on their 3rd place finish, also!!

We also want to thank the Eureka Wrestling Club. Had a great day of wrestling and will be back next year. Got plenty of mat time and wasn't there all night. Keep up the good work.
