The Hays Wrestling Club is excited to announce the 2006 Hays Tournament on March 4 will be held at Gross Memorial Coliseum on the campus of Fort Hays State University. We would like to thank Curtis Hammeke, AD and Cody Bickley, FHSU Wrestling Head Coach for their cooperation to make this work. We will be mailing out the flyers to all the clubs in the state as the tourney draws closer. We had over 800 wrestlers last year and hope to have more this year. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to call or email me.

It is great to see an option that could potentially rival the Wichita Classic. The Classic is always well run but the facility isn't good enough and not even close to Gross Memorial. It would be cool to see some kids from Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, etc make it to Hays. I hope the Hays people can do a great job of promoting this event. They might post the tournament on the aforementioned state's web sites. Again, I don't want to offend the Wichita folks but putting the mats on the cold concrete creates a very hard wrestling surface. There were too many young wrestlers leaving this event on stretchers last year.

We will check into posting the tournament at the other state locations. We have in the past, had wrestlers from Colorado and Nebraska attend our tournament.

Does anyone know some good tournaments coming up
that allow high-school aged club wrestlers
to compete (as opposed to only high school
teams)? For example, can high-school aged
wrestlers compete in Tulsa Nationals or
USJOC?

Unfortunately if your wrestler is from Kansas the dictatorship known as the KSHSAA will not permit your wrestler to compete outside of their high school team's schedule. Cadet and Juniors will have opportunities when the State tournament has concluded.

Will there be a charge at the doors for parents at Gross Colisium and will there be coolers allowed inside or will this tournament be run like High School 3-2-1A State.

A "dictatorship" whose democratically elected governing authority happens to come from both your and my school districts. I don't know your definition of "dictatorship" but that doesn't fit mine.

There will be an admission charge of $2 for adults over 18. Also, no coolers will be allowed in the building. The charge is to offset the cost for using the Coliseum. We are keeping our entry fee at $12 per wrestler. Other large tournaments are charging $15 and more.

We have mailed out the tourney flyers this last week. If anyone else would like one, it can be obtained thru the Calendar post on this site.

We just returned from Hays Tournament - Wonderful day. Facility was great, plenty of room and the tournament staff and all officials were great.

Thanks again - it was joy too to see the FHSU Wrestling Team - my son loved it because one of the team members is from our town - Ulysses.
