15th Annual Metro Classic - 01/29/07 06:35 PM

Coaches on the Kansas side, be sure and fill out the Wicina Award application. At the Metro Classic over $2000 in scholarship money was given out last year to wrestlers in the Kansas City area, and none went to Kansas kids. Not one wrestler on the Kansas side was recommended by his coach. This money, given out by the Metro Classic and the Wicina family, would certainly help somebody towards a college education. The person nominated does not have to be a senior, nor do they have to wrestle in college. They just have to be a great person, have wrestled in high school, and be recommended by their coach. Please get those names in.

Coach Ulmer is there a link to the Wicina Award application? That might be helpful for the coaches.

Smokey,

No, but that is a great suggestion. Your high school coach will get information and recommendation forms in the mail from Dale Niehus. In the mean time let me follow up on that link idea.

Thanks,

Coach Ulmer,

Since it is just a little over a month away I assune all the High School coaches get this information in the mail soon or they already have access to the forms. What is the deadline (dates) for them to get it back to the committee?

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 01/31/07 12:58 AM

Smokeycabin,

Feb 23rd is the deadline and your coach should have the forms, soon. We are looking into the link idea for next year. All the forms have been sent by snailmail for this year.

Thanks for the idea,

I really don't like Kansas' chance this year. The Missouri team is flat out good. Kansas doesn't match up well. I really hate to say it, but it could be pretty bad.

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 02/27/07 11:23 PM

Pyle's match looks interesting. Two undefeated state champs going at it.

Any other match-ups that look good? I imagine Paulie will beat his man pretty handedly. An SQ (MO) going against an undefeated SR with three titles?! On paper, that does not look like a good match up.

I remember when Bunch wrestled a 3 time state champ in his Metro Classic. It was a great match with lots of action/scrambles. Bunch won by decision.

Any other Metro Classic moments?

Of course Hurla beating his man and sending gutwrench into retirement was a CLASSIC in a league all by itself!

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 02/27/07 11:26 PM

rats, you beat me to the Hurla mention.

If I'm not mistaken, nobody liked Kansas' chances last year either, and we all remember how that one turned out.

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 02/27/07 11:55 PM

This is my report on an outstanding match from 1999!

The 125# match was the highlight of the evening with two 4-time state champs facing off. Brandon Fox, a Stanford signee from Higginsville (M), toed the line against Blue Valley Northwest (K), Zach Roberson, who will wrestle for the Iowa State Cyclones. In the first period both were somewhat tentative but Roberson secured the takedown and rode out the period, to the chagrin of the Showme faithfuls. Fox elected to go down and about midway through the second found himself exposed for the five count. The third period was pure Roberson dominance as he opened up to take Fox down 5 times. The final score was 17-5.

Wow. Very cool stuff. Thanks for sharing Randy. We know what the Roberson did in college. What about his opponent? How did his college career go?

Went down the tubes:

Stanford: Won five matches last year and seven matches in 2001-02 ... Scored three dual meet victories for the Card ... Placed fourth in the 2001 California Open ...

Winner of state "Wrestler of the Year" in 1999 ... First team USA Wrestling All-American ... Also played golf and football ... Coached by Bobby Burrows at Higginsville High School ...

Personal: President of Delta Tau Delta fraternity ... Other interests include movies and art ... A Sociology and Art History double major.

A little more info on Brendon (not Brandon) Fox....he'll be getting his law degree in a couple of months from Mizzou.

I wouldn't say his career went "down the tubes" @ Stanford. In college, you get out of it what you put into it....and he didn't put in what the other kids did. Mostly because he was tutoring rich DotCom kids in Silicon Valley for $90/hour. I think I'd rather be doing that than getting the crap beat out of me....

I'm going to have to go w/ a 3x state champ and Freestyle Junior National Champ (and #2 ranked hwt in the country) to win big, probably pin, over a guy who placed 3rd in state.

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 02/28/07 12:21 PM

i think payne can stay off his back. i mean, he only lost to Disney by 1 and i don't think Disney is to far off the Bradley level. when wrestling a Heavyweight as good as Bradley their is always the chance of getting caught and thrown big, if that happens Payne will get stuck. i predict a Bradley win in the area of 4-0.

You are right. Madison has defeated Bradley this year. Disney had a very close match with Madison. Your brother had a very close match in the state semifinal with Disney the eventual 4A State champion. It sounds to me like Joe Payne is peaking this year at just the right time. I am not going to count Joe Payne out of this match.

Old gutwrench predicted last year at this time that the next time he saw Hurla that Hurla would be looking up at the ceiling kicking like a junebug and that he would get off the forum if Hurla won and the Kansas team got within 10 points of Missouri. We haven't heard from gutwrench lately, so you know how gutwrench's predictions last year for Kansas doom went. I am not counting out any of the Aquinas wrestlers, Joe Payne or any of the other Kansas team wrestlers of their matches next week at this Metro Classic. I think we have a good chance. Good luck to all of you worthy Kansas metro representatives and I hope you bring us home another victory.

I have Missouri ahead 19-15 with 6 toss-up weights. I think the pin points will come from Hanson at 112 and Deron at 215.

These could go either way:

Walker/Hogan
Ely/O'Donnell
Almaguer/Carr
Buehler/Neske
Nill/Campbell
Mamie/Shippy

I think it would be nice to see how these wrestlers stack up

I really think it is a toss-up this year. If we can secure bonus points when we have the opportunity we have a real good shot, especially since Payne WILL NOT get pinned!
I think Millstead and Mamie can win there matches. Remember, Mamie only lost twice this year to a studly Evans, and I don't know how good Shippy is but I will never bet agaisnt Jed!
I bet MO takes it a little bit more serious this year though, since they were so stunned last year.
All we can say for now is GOOD LUCK!
This dual has the most intense atmosphere for high school athletes that I've ever experienced!

Tickets can be purchased in advance from wrestlers in the Classic for $8 or they are $10 at the door, and Ely is not wrestling because of a high ankle sprain. Jordan Miller from Ottawa is stepping in at 130 for KS.

KS got to choose who the opponent from MO was going to be for Payne. They chose McClain, who is a 2x state champ, and tough kid. However, it's too bad KS didn't choose to wrestle 4x state champ Shane Nay. That would have been a much better, and higher profile, matchup. I wonder why the KS coaches chose not to wrestle him?

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 03/04/07 06:11 PM

Wow, they are pretty liberal with the term Metro i guess, i have been to sabetha and i did not feel any where near to Kansas City, i think its awesome that Pyle gets to wrestle for kansas because who else would you rather have representing us, but i just didnt figure the Missouri people would go for that. I guess its like the Shrine bowl where they have kids from Wichita and Manhattan playing for the west, i was just kind of suprised when i saw that.
Posted By: Coach Brown

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 03/05/07 01:55 AM

The boundary for the Metro is 90 miles and Sabetha is within that boundary, it was at one time 70 miles and I believe that a few Sabethans have wrestled in it before, Matt Pyle and my assisstant coach Aaron Georg both wrestled in it.
As far as Pyle Vs. Nay, the committee decides that and maybe they were wanting to put the undefeated together or maybe they were just looking at team points.

I know that Jason was excited about the fact he could be wrestling Nay but it wasn't in the cards, we may get that chance at Nationals...Ely on the other hand has an injury I believe that limits him from wrestling-ankle injury I believe.

Either way it is the one of the most exciting duals and the KWCA board looked at the East/West Classic today in our regional meeting. It is going to be an exciting March for many of us and I for one am very excited.

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 03/06/07 03:28 AM

As far as Pyle Vs. Nay, I would say more than likely team points.

Putting undefeated wrestlers together might look good on paper but I'm sure the committee knows who the best wrestlers are.

My opinion, it takes away from this event if you don't match up the best wrestlers.

Thats what we all come out to see (at least on the Missouri side)

New prediction after line-up change:

I have MO up 28-18 with 4 toss-ups. That is even giving MO 12 points for 215/285. I think Payne has a chance to save KS points. The toss-ups are 119, 135, 171 and 189. If KS gets 3 of those 4 and Miller or Payne can hang in there, it could be the start of a streak for Kansas.

KS/MO
112 - 6-0

125 - 6-6
130 - 9-6

In the 4 toss-ups that are listed above, Missouri has the upper hand in weight on 3 of the 4.

119 - Hogan was the 125 state champ.
135 - Neske got beat by Joiner 12-5 in the 140 finals.
189 - Shippy was the 215 state champ. Can he get to 196 with no problem?????

Keep in mind, Corey Carr (130) is a 2x state champ and lost to O'Donnell in the state finals 5-4....and Kendall Burke (160) is a 2x state champ.

189 - Shippy was the 215 state champ. Can he get to 196 with no problem?????

Shippy was a small-ish 215 lbr. His school had a good 189, and went up for team purposes.

Are you suggesting Bradley will pin Payne? Uh oh, watch out for the wrath of Caleb.....

I would think you'd see a pin @ 215 for MO b/4 one at HWT....

They also weighed in last night so with them getting 7 lbs, and having a day to refuel, I'm sure the kids will be big.

Shippy is STRONG STRONG STRONG

I totally agree that 215 is much more likely to hurt KS. If Payne hangs with Bradley, I'll be high fiving half of the gym!

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 03/06/07 05:38 PM

That is probably close. If KS won at 160, it would still be 21-33. Hudgins staying close to Nay would make it 21-31. Almauger beating Carr would tighten it up to 24-28. Walker winning at 119 puts KS back on top. A lot of what if's....

KANSAS WINS 27-26

Missouri had a bunch of very talented studs... But Kansas won 8 matches to Missouri 6 and secured the victory!!!

Great win tonight boys. All I heard for the past year was how good this Missouri team is supposed to be. They were good, but we were better. You guys made it alot easier to be a Kansan living in Missouri tonight. Thank you for that.

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 03/07/07 05:10 AM

You can be sure that Missouri is not going to train like they have the past two years in the future for this event. One would guess that this will make them prepare seriously as the Kansas teams have the past few years. I think that is really what many of the matches came down to. I am really beginning to enjoy this event. I cannot wait until next years Metro Classic.

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 03/07/07 05:29 AM

I suppose that's a real tribute to Tonganoxie coach Bryan Goebel and the other Team Kansas coaches who've been preparing the guys for this event the past two years.

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 03/07/07 05:44 AM

I think that the training done by several coaches in the last two years is a giant reason "our" wrestlers are making a better accounting of themselves.

In the past I have been a bit critical of the cavalier way we approached this event. Last year, we entered the event having been spanked three years in a row. These past two, Kansas was the underdogs and through hard work, won!

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 03/07/07 05:46 AM

I agree, Goebel is a relatively new face in Kansas wrestling, but he is now beginning to make a name for himself. He would be a great addition to Cadets/Juniors work if you ask me. I have been coaching with Goebel since my days at DeSoto and I've seen great things come in a short time with relatively little resources to work with. I definately see Goebel getting more and more recognition for what he has the potential to bring to Kansas wrestling.

Again, great job Team Kansas!

Re: 15th Annual Metro Classic - 03/07/07 07:12 AM

Also, his name is Jeremy, not Bryon. Easy mistake though, I often forget or are plain wrong with names of people I respect and feel like an ass for it.

Awesome job Coach. This is Joe Payne and if you could give that information to me for Senior Nationals then that would be great.

Joe I looked up on the national high school web page and it showed how to go about a wild card. The email address is http://www.nhsca.com/event and then go down to wild cards and it explains. Let me know you received this and great job last night you and all of your teammates.

Eligibility: Must have senior eligibility in high school and a public high school state champion or runner-up or national prep school champion or runner-up during your high school career. New York, New Jersey, and Indiana will qualify the top four wrestlers in each weight class due to past performance and because there is only one division in their state tournament. California will qualify the top eight in each weight class because they have more than 800 high school wrestling programs and only one state championship. Arkansas will qualify only its State Champions since this is the first year for a State Championship in Arkansas. The National Champion and All-Americans (top eight place finishers) in the High School Junior Nationals and the top four finishers from the high school division of the NHSCA National Open Wrestling Championships are also eligible. All entries must be done on-line. Entry deadline is March 25 (must be received by March 25)

Wild Cards - If you are not qualified according to the criteria above, do not submit an entry on-line. You may have an opportunity to receive one of the limited number of wild cards that are determined at the state level to highly-accomplished wrestlers. To inquire about this and determine who your state representative is, email the NHSCA at nhsca@nhsca.com and put wild card in the subject line.
