Daryl Henning was a great wrestler who never won a state title. He ended up winning a National Championship for FHSU. Also Joe Schridde got 4th 2nd 4th.

in the past few years probably Dylan Lloyd-St. Francis or Brady Lamar-Silver Lake

Not 100% sure. I believe there was a guy from BV Stillwell named Pat Ross who was a 4x Runner-Up. I'm probably mistaken though.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/07/07 08:09 PM

Bryce Glick from Plainville was a 3x 3rd placer- losing in the semis each year to the eventual state champ (maybe 4 times, I am not 100% sure). He was a beast, but I think the two day weigh-ins always got him. He was the strongest guy I ever wrestled (in my weight class). He was also part of the most bizarre match I have ever seen.

In 3-2-1A 135 semi final match in 1994 it was Glick from Plainville vs Shipley from Hoxie. Glick shot a double on the whistle, picked Shipley up, halfed him in the air, and took him to his back. On the way down Shipley hit his head on the mat and was knocked out cold. The ref stopped the match and awarded Glick 5 pts. The Hoxie coaches and trainers went out to the mat, woke Shipley up with smelling salts, and he got up and wrestled. Shipley ended up winning like 7-5.

A bizarre match!

Nick Shumate is wrestling for Southern Ilinois University.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/07/07 09:18 PM

Brandon Pfeifer of Ellis; 3x runner-up @ 140, 145, 152.

Coach Twink--remember Brett Marstellar of Dighton? He and Glick were two of the strongest light weight (135 and below) wrestlers I have ever seen. If Marstellar got too far into the second period he would really run out of gas. Of course, it was rare that he went into the second period--until he got to state.

Travis Martin of Ellsworth was a 3 time state runner-up.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/08/07 01:18 AM

Brian Melchiori never won state and was a NJCAA National Champ, outstanding wrestler. Two time DII National Champion with an OW award. I believe he was also the first non division I wrestler to win the Las Vegas Invitational as OW.

BigHead - You have a good memory! Pat Ross was a 3-time runnerup and took 4th another year, but an excellent multi-sport athlete.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/08/07 03:09 AM

Aquinas had three excellent wrestlers this year that have never won individual state championships but all three have each one second place and at least one third place finish.

Mark Millstead, 46 wins this year (35 were pins), 2006 2nd place State 135, 2007 3rd place State 145.

RJ Nill, 171 45 wins this year, 133 career wins, 2005 4th place State at 125, 2006 3rd place State at 152, 2007 2nd place State at 171, recent Metro Classic victory.

Jed Mamie, 189 46 wins this year, 131 career wins, 4 time state placer, 6th 160 2004, 3rd 2005 171, 2nd 2006 171, 3rd 2007 189, recent Metro Classic victory

All three were team State champion members in 2005 6A and 2007 5A. I believe Millstead missed the 2005 6A State tournament due to an injury he sustained in the week before regionals.

I don't believe Norton coach Bill Johnson was ever a State Champion (2nd maybe?) but was an NAIA National Champ at Fort Hays State.

David Karnowski of Wamego I think never won a state title, but man he was good.

Dan Marino, OOPS. Wrong sport

I would have to go with Jesse Hardy, or Nick Shumate

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/08/07 12:38 PM

matt bailes from turner was a pretty tough wrestler who never won one. 2,2,3,3 i believe. lost some very close matches late in the state tournament.

as of recently i'd probably have to go with shumate...that kid was freakin good.

Brandon Pfeifer of Ellis; 3x runner-up @ 140, 145, 152.

He was runner-up at 160 his senior year, so one of the weights is incorrect above. I may be wrong but I believe he was runner-up to Lawrenz from Herrington his sophomore and junior years (not sure what weight class). Nonetheless, he was a 3 time runner-up.

Egg:

I definitely remember Marstellar- he was STRONG, but not quite as strong as Glick. I am pretty sure Brett took 5th that year. Another stong one from 135 that year was Kelly Stoppel from Scott City (my 1st high school match). That guy looked like he was chiseled from a solid block of Marble. I guess you could say I earned my dues wrestling those guys every stinking tournament and dual my freshman year!

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/08/07 09:56 PM

I am biased, but I think that Derek Ross, Dylan Loyd, Trevor Richard of St. Francis are three wrestlers that could have won multiple times. They did have problems with the big matches, but they were very tough, and wrestled nationally. All three of them are wrestling in college, two at Hays and one at Kearney. Between the three of them there are 5 second place, 5 third place, and one fifth place finish.

Twink,

More than once your Freshman year I was SINCERELY fearful that you were going to get hurt. There were some beasts that year at 135. Smith Center had a real good, strong kid that year also.

Tell you what, Byan Roberts of Turner was pretty darn good he just couldnt get by Beeson of Ark City. Nobody else could either but they wrestled (i think) all three years in the finals. Both were national placers later on in college.

Westfahl, Beeson and Roberts only met twice in the finals, Brian's sophmore year he wrestled Jerome Hernandez from AC. Also I do believe that Brian placed in college but Beeson did not.

Hey Beeson, which Beeson was it that won it I think at Central Oklahoma or was that Beeson related to the Ark City Beesons. Since you are a Beeson I am thinking you are the person to ask \:\)

Same Beeson, that was me. I wrestled for Central but never placed, but I like the outcome of your story better.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/27/07 02:59 AM

Hey go with it lol. A bad memory is sometimes better than the other way around lol. You were darn good though, I didn't ever coach against you but saw you wrestle many times. You were a tough critter. I had so much respect for all of you and certainly for your coach. It was one of the reasons i was glad we went down to 5A because it gave us a chance to wrestle against Ark City. It was a privilege.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/27/07 06:52 PM

Brook Medrano. Placed all four years but never won it. Didn't hurt he met up with Roberson in the semi's his freshman soph. and junior year.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/27/07 10:53 PM

I will go with Derek Roles. Stats, I don't remember, I know he took second against a kid I recall from south his junior year.(Good Match by the way), Senior year, I think his weight class was pretty stacked, not sure( I didn't follow 6A back then), but I picked him because he was easily better than some kids that I had seen with state titles, and he also battled injuries his whole career as a starting quarterback when Derby was actually still pretty good.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/29/07 06:38 PM

I would agree with you about Glick. I wrestled him like 4-5 times throught junior high and high school. He was tough as an 8th grader. I do remember him "slamming" shipley, I though it was questionable at the time. Shipley went on to the win the championship match as well. Glick did like to cut a lot of weight though. I do agree, he was a good non state champion.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 03/29/07 06:48 PM

Coach twink,
Where are you from, I wrestled 135 that year as well. I wrestled stoppel in a dual, it ended up to be like 12-10 match something like that. Me and him whent back and forth in that match.
Posted By: Canary_GT

Re: Bes NON state champ - 02/24/10 07:01 PM

I agree With with Coach Twink two of the Best Wrestlers I ever faces were Bryce Glick and Brett Marsteller And I pinned Brett at the regional finals which he did have a fairly serious should injury so somewhat easy to turn him. Bryce Glick was a monster Wrested him twice my senior year once in colby which he one 10 to 7 and in the state semi which I won 7-2. Coach twink is correct the semi match was very bizarre what little I remeber.

Ronnie Shipley

Re: Bes NON state champ - 02/24/10 07:22 PM

Shipley are you keeping track of these concussions? With the wrestling plus messing with the Kosters you have to be approaching the limit!
Posted By: Canary_GT

Re: Bes NON state champ - 02/24/10 07:26 PM

I tell you what I really wish I would have started keeping track back when I was a junior and Andy Nolan from St. Francis delivered the first of Many.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 02/24/10 08:22 PM

Josh Stahl -P-ville for never placing. Good technical wrestler but ran into some bad luck at State. He was lots better than his brother, Chunk, who did place.
Posted By: 321a Wrestler

Re: Bes NON state champ - 02/24/10 11:47 PM

they wrestled in 2 totally different weight classes. Jason was a heavyweight weighing jst over 200 lbs. his natural weight class would of been 215 but a aa by the name of staab was at that weight class. And josh was right in the thick of 3 state tournaments his outside carry was truly very slick.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 02/25/10 02:23 AM

I must say that my cousin Bryce Glick was a tough kid that I always thought would win and surprised when he didn't. He could be a scary older cuz, I will never forget the time I messed up his bedroom and left hotwheels everywhere.

The best non state champ I watched was Johnathan Gohanahour of Prairie view who lost to Wes Reynolds in 1999 in the finals. I also think he got 3rd 1998 and a 4th(?) in 1997

Re: Bes NON state champ - 02/25/10 01:56 PM

I would have to say Brandon Pfeifer of Ellis, 3x runner up pretty salty. Also Brandon Terry of Plainville was a beast. I wrestled with him at Kearney for one year and he beat me down every single day.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 02/25/10 02:31 PM

I think Marvio Tischhauser would be worth noting, misses his freshman and junior year due to knee injuries, places his sophomore year (can't remember what place). And comes up short in the finals losing by a point or two to Sam Thoman.

Re: Bes NON state champ - 02/25/10 05:15 PM

Gonna go way back to the early 80's but Teryl Slansky from Stockton was I believe a 4 time runner up (3 for sure). Not just that but also was also a runner-up as many times in league and Regionals, all to the same wrestler, Larry Grieve from Osborne. Not sure Slansky every won a tournament but finished 2nd at nearly every one all through high school to the same wrestler. Got to be a little frustrating.
