4 X Kansas Stae Champs. - 03/02/09 01:35 AM

Here is another set of numbers for you crunchers. I see from the KSHSAA wrestling history that there are/have been 24 4 time state champs--this includes two this year. 321A 6 of 24, 4A 4 of 24, 5A 10, and 6A 4. Now expect to hear the 321A crown to use these number to prove how much better 321A wrestling is---those 5 and 6A wreslers are all weaker and thus easier to beat enroute to a 4 time championship.

Hmmm, tell you what, I coached kids, good kids, against Duell, Oeser, Goodale, Ware, and Layton and I can tell you first hand that they were all equally hard to beat. I saw no difference in them and only won one match against the lot of them and that was one of their first matches of his career (good that we caught him early) One thing I found out, a great one is a great one. Where he comes from does not make it hurt any less or make you feel any less helpless lol.

Yeah, poor little 'weaker' 6a Roberson. Never lost in HS (153-0 record and won 109 of those bouts by pin fall). and won a D-1 TITLE in college afer being the runner-up the previous year. If you want to learn more about Roberson:

Studs come from all sizes of schools. Big, medium and small...

That is one of the beautiful thing about the individual nature of our great sport.

LOL I forgot about him, we wrestled him with a state champ and got beat 8-0. How could I have left him out lol. There was just no place to hide against those guys. Tell you what those kids from Goddard showed me a bunch this year. I had not seen them before and they are the equal of any of the aformentioned kids. Man they were/are impressive.

Re: 4 X Kansas Stae Champs. - 03/02/09 04:50 AM

The crazy thing is that as of this date only 2 of the KS four time state champions have reached NCAA Division All American Status. I believe this is correct unless someone has better data...

Who has a chance to win it for the fourth time next year in addition to Colt Rogers???

Also of note - some that were NOT 4 timers placed well! Douglas, Bunch, Matt Murray. . . I'm sure there are more.

Assume that Beard in 2008 as a 141# is a typo.. Should be 171.

Re: 4 X Kansas Stae Champs. - 03/02/09 04:46 PM

For some reason I have always thought that at the finals of 1998 4-5-6A State Tournament, that at one time there were 3 to be 4 timers on the mats at one time-- all in the same weight class. I thought it was 4A Jermy Long from Santa Fe Trail (vs I think Bo Pratt from Pratt), 5A Bo Maynes Salina VS ??, and 6A Zack Roberson BVNW vs ???. I thought the weight class was 125 or 130. But, if the names , wts, and years in the previous post are correct, I must be wrong. The 3 do not match up in one wt class in any one year. Dusty Spaulding Emporia and Travis Sites McPH were in 4 X hunt some of those same years--but do not think either one are whom I am talking about. I can still hear the annoucer talking about multiple state champs on three mats at one time. A great memory---hate to think I have been wrong this many years

So which classification do you count Treaster (321A or 4A), Baldridge (6A or 5A), Deshazer (6A or 5A), and Cotton (6A or 5A)? They all won 4 titles, but all won them in multiple classes. Duell and Oeser both won Grand State Titles. Which proves that the great ones win regardless of where they go to school or the size of the school.

Look for Colt Rogers from smith center to be a four timer next year

Re: 4 X Kansas Stae Champs. - 03/03/09 02:34 AM

Long was actually a 112 lbs his freshman year. And the three 4 timers on the mat were Long and Spaulding were the same weight their senior year and stood side by side on the podium. Same year Stites won 4 two weight classes above them. And Earl Jones won his third I believe as well. One of the best state tournaments to watch with lots of history being made.

Looks like if you want to be a 4-timer, you have to wrestle in the lower weights. There are a few exceptions, with 189 being the limit for 4-timers.

Re: 4 X Kansas Stae Champs. - 03/03/09 05:50 AM

Bo Maynes and Zach are the only 2 undefeated 4X'ers here in Kansas. Even more impressive than not only being undefeated for 4 years and winning 4 state championships is the fact that Bo NEVER had a takedown scored on him in his entire high school career, now that is DOMINATION. And the thing is he wasn't just wrestling 4A and 5A opponents, he wrestled them all.
