Seniors moving on to college - 03/27/09 12:36 AM

Can someone put together a list of all the seniors who are moving on to college to play sports. I would like to see where they are going and what they are doing sport wise.

Re: Seniors moving on to college - 03/27/09 01:29 AM

Aaron Patton-Pratt
Dustin Zahorsky-Pratt
Kevin Callahan (08)-Pratt transfered from Pitt
Good Possibility of Alan Callahan as well.

I know there is a lot more and this list will be updated quickly.
Good class of seniors and should battle well at Senior Nationals.
Good Luck!

Nowak to Baker, Baker really got a steal on that one... Congratualtions to all young men who want to pursue the sport of wrestling farther. There are ways you can look at wrestling in college. I personally look at it as its a tool, that is helping me dod what i want in the end; and that is end up teaching in a classroom. Congrats too all.

Scarecrow_103,

That is a very nice thing for you to say about Jacob Nowak. He is very excited to be part of the first Baker University wrestling team. He is hoping to be part of a NAIA national championship team during his wrestling career at Baker. We have been extremely impressed with Jimmy May and we are convinced that Coach May will develop a successful nationally competitive team at Baker just like the very successful high school wrestling program he developed in Nevada.

Besides the wrestling opportunity that Baker offers, we believe that it is going to be an excellent academic opportunity for Jacob. Baker University has a very good academic program and a very favorable student to teacher ratio. It is a small campus where all the students seem to know each other. We have talked to a lot of current students, former students and parents of former students. Everyone we talked to has had nothing but good things to say about Baker and their college experiences at Baker.

For all these reasons we think that Baker is a great opportunity for Jacob and it will be for a lot of Kansas high school wrestlers in the years to come.

Kendric Maple is on the planning to wrestle but undecided list. He went to Boston University last week-end and is going on visits to Iowa State on Thursday-Friday and Oklahoma on Saturday-Sunday and I believe Northern Illinoise early next week.

Chase Nelson is also planning on wrestling either at Ft. Hays or Labette. Decision will be made within a week for both I believe.

I think the reason that some of the names on the list above might be missing from the NJCAA list that you have sited is that all the junior colleges are possibly not current with their signings that they are providing the NJCAA. I looked over the NJCAA list and only three Kansas wrestlers are listed:

Justin Ringgold Wichita KS Northwest HS Neosho County CC Class of 2008
Sharky Slyter Paola KS Quincy High School St. Louis CC-Meramec
Everett Urban Oberlin KS Decatur Community HS Colby CC

I am pretty sure that more than just these three Kansas wrestlers have signed with junior colleges. The names that I have listed above as wrestling next year at junior colleges have been either posted on this topic or I have received private messages on the signings from credible sources. I do want to only be listing correct committments so if someone knows of a person that I have listed incorrectly please let me know what needs to be corrected. Thank you.

I have been informed that it was reported in the Kansas City Star Olathe section that David Lalo of Olathe East will be wrestling at Harvard University next year. Congratulations to future Ivy League wrestler David Lalo and best of luck in school and on the mat. And that was sure a big victory that you had for Kansas at the Metro Classic this year!

Congratulations to Ryan Swatzel 2008 graduate from Phillipsburg on deciding to wrestle at Pratt CC next year. I am not going to include him on the list that I am updating on 2009 graduates who are planning to continue wrestling in college next year but this is great news that Ryan has decided to get back into wrestling after taking one year off. Best of luck Ryan in your college wrestling career at Pratt and then at another school after your junior college years.

Re: Seniors moving on to college - 05/10/09 06:36 PM

Also- Cameron Jesseph just signed Thursday or Friday (5/7 or 5/8) w/LCC so that may be why he wasn't on the njcaa list.

Another Also - Anyone have a list of Athletic Directors from all the KS 4 & 2 yr schools that "DO NOT" have wrestling? Might be a way to show 1 or more of them how many kids they would have a shot at keeping "in state" if they had a program and the AD's from the schools that do have wrestling would be happy to hear from all of us as well. The more options, the better. I'd like to see Pitt St., Emporia St., Washburn pick up wrestling to go along with FHSU...as well as the other 2 yr schools in the state...plus, how awesome would it be if the KCAC started wrestling as a league? I am really excited to hear about all the "in state" kids going to Baker! How fantastic!!

Congrats to the boys that have any level of scholarship to wrestle...you're not going to regret your decision. It's tough and it will make you tougher! Good Luck!!

Now, anyone have that list of college AD's that we can start firing letters and emails to??

As far as junior colleges go, I would suggest starting with:

Dan Pratt, Athletic Director
Kansas City Kansas Community College
7250 State Avenue
Kansas City, Kansas 66112

dpratt1@kckcc.edu

This school is where they have the Senior Metro Classic every year. They see first hand the enthusiam that wrestling can generate from this event. There is no community college in the Kansas City metro area with a wrestling program and we really need a junior college wrestling program in the KC metro area. They could also attract many very good wrestlers from the Kansas City Missouri side of state line that would not otherwise attend Kansas City Kansas Community College. I talked to them a couple of years ago and they were considering adding wrestling at that time. It might help them to start thinking about it again, if they started receiving letters and e-mails from different areas of the state.

It was also reported in the same paper today that Eric Grant of Olathe North had signed with Pratt CC. We had already had that reported so no change was needed on that announcement.

Stevie08, Trent is indeed a big name and I am going to be cautious and put Trent Cox down as Undecided for now. I will put him as committed as soon as we get confirmation that he has signed. UNO has not listed their 2009-2010 recruits yet. If someone could point me to a newspaper article or a confirmation from either Trent's coaches or family on the signing, that would work for me too. Thank you for the alert on Trent.

Yes it is tough to see all that Kansas D-1 talent leave the state. There has been a recent topic on the national wrestling forum about what colleges would be the best place to start D-1 programs. Several posters from other states have commented how it is too bad that a state like Kansas with all its good high school wrestlers does not even have one D-1 college wrestling program.

Thank you for the correction, Aaron.

I knew Colby Crank was from Hutchinson High School. I guess I just had Colby on the mind as I was typing and I was evidently in too big of a hurry.

We have watched Colby Crank wrestle since he was about 8 years old. Colby is a very good wrestler and Colby Crank is an excellent recruit for Western State College of Colorado.

There are more KS wrestlers either just signed and/or close to signing, as well. And some others still considering BU.

And there have been some great signings from Oklahoma, Missouri, and the West Coast, too.

Looks to be a great young incoming class for BU!

Nice work, Coach May.

Re: Seniors moving on to college - 06/30/09 12:09 AM

It is official. Anson Worrell is going to Drexel. We sent in the housing deposit and scheduled vacation time in September.
Forgive me, but I can't end this post without a few comments.
When I called Coach Jimmy May with the bad news, I told him that he changed my son's life. Before he approached me in the bleachers at the Husky Invitational and expressed interest in my son, Anson was going to attend Johnson County Community College. At the time, all that he had on his wrestling resumé was a second place finish at the Johnson County Classic. Really, not much to get excited about.
After the State tournament, it was Coach May that encouraged me to send Anson to the High School Senior Nationals because he "earned it" and he "wanted my son to get all of the exposure that he could get." Ironically, that is where Drexel became interested. I have nothing but respect for the man.
Thanks for bearing with the monologue.
I have to say that it is funny to see that this "news" was posted here over a month ago.

Re: Seniors moving on to college - 06/30/09 12:53 PM

Ray,

I want to congratulate Anson and your family on his signing to wrestle with Drexel next year. I agree with what Eric Johnson said about Anson in the freestyle/greco forum topic on the Junior Duals in that Anson is going to be a very good college wrestler on the Division I level. He has excellent natural wrestling skills and he works hard to maximize those skills. He is a warrior on the mat. I think he will do very well at Drexel.

Anson was added to the list on 5/22 based on a post from another poster who stated that Anson had signed with Drexel. I apologize that he appears to have been prematurely added to the list as committed to Drexel.

I really have tried to be careful not to be too early on announcements and it is the reason that I always end my list with the request to let me know if any information in the list is incorrect or needs to be changed. If anyone knows of any other information that needs to be corrected on the list, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Anson Worrell, I wish you the best of luck at Drexel in both your wrestling and your academics.

InterMat releases 2009 recruiting class rankings

7/7/2009
InterMat
InterMat has released its recruiting class rankings for 2009.

Oklahoma State, on the strength of five top 100 recruits, along with some talented transfers, sits atop the rankings. Minnesota boasts four top 100 recruits and comes in at No. 2. Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Iowa round out the top five.

Below is a breakdown of InterMat's top 25 recruiting classes for 2009.

1. Oklahoma State

Top 100 Recruits: No. 3 Chris Perry (Stillwater, OK), No. 11 Jon Morrison (Carl Sandburg, IL), No. 21 Dallas Bailey (Catoosa, OK), No. 53 Ladd Rupp (Perry OK), No. 71 Zach White (Woodward OK)

Impact Transfers: Mike Benefiel (Northwestern/Montini, IL), Albert White (North Iowa Area CC/St. Rita, IL)

Impact Newcomer: Alan Gelogaev (Russia)

Other Notable Recruit: Blake Rosholt (Ponca City, OK)

Commentary: Two of the best wrestlers from the Class of 2007 combine with five of the best high school wrestlers in the nation this year to provide the Cowboys a staggering recruiting haul. This group should help assure that Oklahoma State returns to the top of the NCAA leader board, and stays there for a while, a position from which they had a rare absence this past season. Morrison is a two-time Junior Nationals champion in freestyle, while Perry earned that title this past season.

2. Minnesota

Top 100 Recruits: No. 22 Alec Ortiz (Newberg, OR), No. 30 David Thorn (STMA, MN), No. 49 Tony Nelson (Cambridge-Isanti, MN), No. 84 Kevin Steinhaus (Kurkhoven-Murdock Sunburg, MN)

Impact Newcomer: Jake Deitchler (USOTC/Anoka, MN)

Other Ranked Recruits: Bart Reiter (Don Bosco, IA), 20th at 135; Jake Kettler (Anoka, MN), 18th at 285

Other Notable Recruits: Pat Smith (Chaska MN), Danny Zilverberg (Wayzata MN)

Commentary: This is a strong group of recruits for head coach J Robinson, and provides wrestlers that project to almost every single weight class. Deitchler, a 2008 Olympian in Greco-Roman, should be an immediate starter at 157 pounds. Ortiz, Thorn, and Nelson were Junior National All-Americans in freestyle this past summer.

3. Oklahoma

Top 100 Recruits: No. 7 Jake Kemerer (Hempfield, PA), No. 18 Matt Lester (Eureka, MO), No. 28 Alex Ekstrom (Palmyra-Macedon, NY), No. 86 Nick Lester (Eureka, MO)

Other Ranked Recruits: Jarrod Patterson (Cushing, OK), 20th at 130; Kendrick Maple (Wichita Heights, KS), 14th at 135

Other Notable Recruits: Bobby Williams (Tuttle, OK), Kyle Detmer (Wichita Bishop Carroll, KS), Nolan McBryde (Chugiak, AK), Joe Lospinoso (David Brearley, NJ)

Commentary: Three straight seasons outside of the top ten at the NCAA tournament have moved head coach Jack Spates onto the hot seat according to some fans in the wrestling community. However, this is the type of recruiting class that -- if it can perform based on high school credentials -- can return the Sooners into the upper tier of programs nationwide. Of the ten listed here, only Lospinoso did not win a state title this season. However, Lospinoso -- along with Maple -- was an All-American at the NHSCA Senior Nationals.

4. Nebraska

Top 100 Recruits: No. 20 Caleb Kolb (Grove City, PA), No. 27 David Klingsheim (Brentwood Liberty, CA), No. 41 CJ Napier (Columbus, KS), No. 70 Cody Compton (NorthCo, MO), No. 75 Kyle Waldo (Nebraska)

Other Notable Recruit: Michael Klinginsmith (Kearney Catholic, NE)

Commentary: Coming off of two consecutive fourth-place finishes at the NCAA tournament, this group of recruits will be well-equipped to build upon that momentum when they become a part of Mark Manning's lineup. All six of these wrestlers were state champions this past season. Napier and Compton earned championships at the NHSCA Senior Nationals, while Kolb and Waldo finished in the top four.

5. Iowa

Top 100 Recruits: No. 10 Tony Ramos (Glenbard North, IL), No. 15 Derek St. John (Iowa City West, IA), No. 17 Ethen Lofthouse (Mountain Crest, UT), No. 56 Dylan Carew (Iowa City West, IA)

Other Notable Recruit: Nick Trizzino (Bettendorf, IA)

Commentary: The two-time defending champions, led by head coach Tom Brands, have found yet another group of tough, talented, and physical wrestlers to don the Hawkeye black and gold for the next four to five years. Anchoring this group is a trio of wrestlers -- Ramos, St. John, and Lofthouse -- that finished inside of the top three at the Junior National Freestyle Championships last summer in Fargo, North Dakota.

6. Penn State

Top 100 Recruits: No. 1 David Taylor (Graham, OH), No. 5 Ed Ruth (Blair Academy, NJ)

Impact Transfer: Cyler Sanderson (Iowa State/Wasatch, UT)

Other Notable Recruit: Luke Macchiaroli (Corona, AZ)

Commentary: What this group lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in quality. New head coach Cael Sanderson inherited Ruth, who signed in the early period under the previous Penn State coaching staff. Two incoming freshmen -- Taylor and Macchiaroli -- had signed National Letters of Intent to wrestle for Sanderson at Iowa State. However, when Sanderson left, they were released and chose to join the coached that had recruited them in Happy Valley. Also coming along with Cael Sanderson is his brother Cyler, who will be a senior this coming season, and was an All-American in 2008 at 157 pounds.

7. Virginia

Top 100 Recruits: No. 16 Jon Fausey (Line Mountain, PA), No. 34 Zach Clemente (LaSalle, NY), No. 83 Nicky Gordon (Wyoming Seminary, PA)

Impact Transfer: Matt Snyder (Bloomsburg/Lewistown, PA)

Other Notable Recruits: Andrew Williams (Tabb, VA), Stephen Doty (Kirkwood, MO), Jon Becker (Bergen Catholic, NJ)

Commentary: Going back to his days as an assistant coach at Cornell, Steve Garland had a reputation as being one of the nation's best recruiters. This class, his third full group as head coach at Virginia -- which is his alma mater -- confirms the reputation. It addresses needs in the lower half of the lineup as well as the upperweights (other than 285). Fausey and Clemente were Junior National All-Americans in freestyle last summer.

8. Virginia Tech

Top 100 Recruits: No. 19 Andrew Clement (Grassfield, VA), No. 72 Brian Stephens (Graham, OH), No. 81 Erik Spjut (The Woodlands, TX)

Other Notable Recruits: Cody Tyler (Oak Park, MO), John Hayden Countryman (Prattville, AL), Taylor Knapp (Collins Hill, GA), Justin Armstrong (Bishop Lynch, TX)

Commentary: Heading into the fourth year of the post-Brands era, Kevin Dresser has the program going in a very positive direction, and this group of recruits will do nothing but to accelerate that progression. Six of these recruits were state champions this past scholastic season. The only one not to win a state-level type this season was Armstrong; however, he won a preseason title at the Super32 Challenge -- a tournament also won by Clement.

9. Michigan

Top 100 Recruits: No. 2 Erik Grajales (Brandon, FL), No. 12 Dan Yates (Hesperia, MI), No. 32 Sean Boyle (Blair Academy, NJ)

Other Notable Recruits: Pete Rendina (Dundee, MI), Brandon Zeerip (Hesperia, MI)

Commentary: In recent years, the Michigan Wolverines have been without quality production from wrestlers in the opening two weights. Two of Joe McFarland's recruits in this class address that problem head on. Boyle, a projected 125-pound wrestler, was champion at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Grajales, a projected 133/141 wrestler, has been an All-American on multiple occasions in Fargo. Both wrestlers could be in the running for immediate roles as starters. Like Boyle, Yates was also a champion at the NHSCA Senior Nationals this past April in Virginia Beach.

10. Ohio State

Top 100 Recruits: No. 6 Collin Palmer (St Edward, OH), No. 42 Ian Paddock (Warsaw, NY), No. 87 Nick Heflin (Massillon Perry, OH)

Other Notable Recruit: Jacob Vaughan (Columbus DeSales, OH), 12th at 130

Commentary: Coming off of back-to-back runners-up at the NCAA tournament under Tom Ryan, the Buckeyes have brought in another quality group of wrestlers. Leading that group is four-time state champion Palmer, whose brother Lance has earned NCAA All-American honors in all three seasons of his college career to date. Paddock, Heflin, and Vaughan all earned All-American honors at the NHSCA Senior Nationals.

11. Old Dominion

Top 100 Recruits: No. 14 John Nicholson (Des Moines Roosevelt, IA), No. 80 Justin Lavalle (Apple Valley, MN)

Other Ranked Recruit: Joey Sheridan (Tulsa Union, OK), 15th at 171

Other Notable Recruits: Eric Dunnet (Eastern Regional, NJ), Jack Burbank (Cox, VA)

Commentary: Yet another relatively new coach doing big things in the Commonwealth of Virginia is Steve Martin. Part of his recruiting class includes these noted wrestlers, four of whom won state championships this past season. Dunnet was a state runner-up; however, he earned All-American honors at the Junior National Freestyle Championships last summer along with Lavalle.

12. Purdue

Top 100 Recruits: No. 55 Kendrick Sanders (South Dade, FL), No. 63 Camden Eppert (Anderson Highland, IN), No. 65 Cashe Quiroga (Lawrence North, IN)

Other Ranked Recruit: Steve Sandefer (Mishawaka, IN), 16th at 140

Other Notable Recruits: Adam Walls (Beavercreek, OH), Alex White (Mt. Vernon, IN), Brice Grimes (Lawrence North, IN), Kyle Mosier (Yorktown, IN), Will Mascaro (Carmel, IN)

Commentary: For Purdue, not exactly perceived as a Big Ten power, this recruiting class could be the start of the paradigm shift that Scott Hinkel is trying to achieve heading into his third year as head coach at his alma mater. The anchor of this class -- Sanders -- is a two-time Junior National Greco-Roman champion. Eppert, a Junior National All-American in freestyle, and Quiroga, a NHSCA Senior Nationals runner-up, are the type of lowerweight wrestlers that will be expected to step in as starters early in their careers. White, Grimes, Mosier, and Mascaro combined for a total of six losses during their senior seasons despite none of them winning state titles.

13. Illinois

Top 100 Recruits: No. 13 Sam White (Massillon Perry, OH), No. 82 Tony Dallago (Central Dauphin, PA)

Other Ranked Recruit: Mario Gonzalez (West Aurora, IL), 15th at 189

Commentary: Though not yet releasing their late period signings, the Illini have already brought in three very talented wrestlers for this coming year -- the first under new head coach Jim Heffernan. White is a two-time finalist in Fargo (once as a cadet, once as a junior), and was a state finalist in each of his three seasons -- with two championships -- as a varsity starter. Dallago and Gonzalez were state champions this past season, and project as upperweight wrestlers with strong upside potential.

14. Cal Poly

Top 100 Recruits: No. 49 Tyler Caldwell (Goddard, KS), No. 93 Brandon Rocha (LeMoore, CA)

Other Ranked Recruits: Ian Daube (Poway, CA), 12th at 189; Grant Haschak (Lake Washington, WA), 18th at 215

Other Notable Recruit: Brittain Longmire (Cimarron Memorial, NV)

Commentary: The Mustangs bring in two top 100 recruits and four total wrestlers that were nationally ranked in their weight class this past season. Caldwell and Haschak finished in the top three at the NHSCA Senior Nationals this past April. Daube was a state champion, and Rocha is a two-time state runner-up.

15. Missouri

Top 100 Recruits: No. 23 Zach Toal (Troy Christian, OH), No. 89 Kellen Bounous (Monett, MO)

Other Ranked Recruit: Kyle Bradley (Francis Howell Central, MO), 14th at 140

Other Notable Recruits: Eric Wilson (Grandview, CO), Brad Wisdom (Farmington, MO), Luke Greco (Blue Springs, MO)

Commentary: Brian Smith has addressed needs in the lower half of his lineups with this group of wrestlers, as all six of these wrestlers project to start their careers at 165 pounds or below. The anchor of this class is three-time state champion Toal, who was a champion at the Walsh Ironman this past season. Bradley was a double (both Freestyle and Greco-Roman) All-American at the Junior Nationals in Fargo and followed that up with a third place finish at the NHSCA Senior Nationals.

16. Stanford

Top 100 Recruits: No. 91 Bret Baumbach (Lewis Central, IA), No. 98 Kyle Meyer (Monett, MO), No. 100 Ryan Mango (Whitfield, MO)

Other Notable Recruits: Sam Umlauf (Wausau West, WI)

Commentary: Jason Borrelli's first full recruiting class as head coach of the Cardinal is a pretty good one, and anchored by three wrestlers with experience on the national stage. Mango was a double Junior Nationals champion this past summer, Baumbach was a double All-American in the same tournament, and Meyer finished third place at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Like his father Tom at Central Michigan, Jason will also seek to find some diamonds in the rough -- talented wrestlers without the national credentials -– and Umlauf fits that description.

17. Wisconsin

Top 100 Recruits: No. 60 Derrick Borlie (Millbrook, VA), No. 68 Brendan Ard (Watchung Hills, NJ)

Other Notable Recruits: Shawn Perry (Wausau West, WI), Kalvin York (Belleville, WI), Eric Vanevenhoven (Kaukauna, WI), Jackson Hein (Wausau West, WI), Cole Tobin (Hudson, WI)

Commentary: Head coach Barry Davis seems to be targeting wrestlers that can compete in the middle and upperweight portions of his lineup with this group of recruits. NHSCA Seniors Nationals champion Borlie is the anchor of this class. Two-time state champion Ard, who also was an All-American at the NHSCA Senior Nationals, is the other ranked wrestler within this class. Six wrestlers that won Wisconsin state titles (four of them listed here) during their senior season, and had a total of only six losses this past season. The one Wisconsin native not to win a state title is arguably the best of the group, as York has thrived in Fargo, including the Junior National Greco-Roman title that he won this past summer.

18. Cornell

Top 100 Recruit: No. 4 Kyle Dake (Lansing, NY)

Other Ranked Recruit: Mike Nevinger (Letchworth, NY), 18th at 140

Other Notable Recruits: Tyler Biscaha (Jackson Memorial, NJ), Cody Kelly (Reynolds, PA), Craig Eifert (Mason, MI), Stryker Lane (Norwood, CO)

Commentary: The anchor of this class is a kid that just loves to compete and succeed. Dake was a state champion this past season, champion at the NHSCA Senior Nationals, and has competed at the FILA Junior World Championships in Greco-Roman. Nevinger and Eifert earned All-American honors at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Biscaha was selected to compete in the Wrestling USA Magazine Dream Team All-Star Classic. Rob Koll is addressing needs in the lower half of the lineup with this class, as five of the noted wrestlers (all but Lane) project to start their careers at 149 pounds or below.

19. Boise State

Top 100 Recruits: No. 35 Jake Swartz (Auburn, WA), No. 47 Brock Gutches (Crater, OR)

Other Ranked Recruit: Toby Erickson (Helena, MT), 14th at 285

Commentary: Though yet to release their late period signees, head coach Greg Randall has already brought in three wrestlers very seasoned and proven on the national stage. Swartz and Gutches were double All-Americans at Junior Nationals this past summer, while Erickson was an All-American at the NHSCA Senior Nationals.

20. Wyoming

Top 100 Recruits: No. 33 Tyler Cox (Campbell County, WY), No. 48 Patrick Martinez (Temecula Valley, CA)

Other Notable Recruit: Jimmy Belleville (Black Hills, WA)

Commentary: With his first recruiting class, head coach Mark Branch has brought in a trio of notable wrestlers with proven credentials on the national stage. Each wrestler has won at least one state championship. Cox was champion at the NHSCA Senior Nationals, Martinez a Junior National Greco-Roman All-American, and Belleville a Junior Nationals runner-up in freestyle.

21. Columbia

Top 100 Recruit: No. 85 Steve Santos (Brick Memorial, NJ)

Other Ranked Recruits: Robert Dyar (Vestavia Hills, AL), 14th at 112; Stephen West (Bakersfield, CA), 18th at 160

Other Notable Recruits: Jake O'Hara (Crestwood, PA), Tyler Sheridan (DeLaSalle, CA), Nick Mills (University School, OH)

Commentary: Brendan Buckley has brought in yet another strong recruiting class as Columbia seeks to move closer to the top of the EIWA standings. Three in the group earned Junior National All-American honors in Fargo this past summer; Dyar and Sheridan were third in Greco-Roman, while Dyar and West were fifth in freestyle.

22. North Carolina State

Top 100 Recruits: No. 39 Eloheim Palma (Cary, NC), No. 73 Dale Shull (Fort Lupton, CO)

Other Notable Recruit: Andrew Tumlin (Harrison, OH)

Commentary: Riding the tide of Darrion Caldwell's majestic national title victory over Brent Metcalf, the Wolfpack signed a pair of NHSCA Senior Nationals champions in Palma and Shull. Also in this class is state champion Tumlin, who projects to fit into the always tough to fill 197-pound weight class.

23. Indiana

Top 100 Recruits: No. 46 Ryan LeBlanc (Morrisville Eaton, NY), No. 57 Max Ortega (Rio Rancho, NM)

Other Notable Recruits: Justin Brooks (Warsaw, IN), Tanner Kriss (Colby, KS)

Commentary: Both of the nationally-ranked recruits -- LeBlanc and Ortega -- earned All-American honors at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Brooks was a Junior National All-American in freestyle this past summer, while Kriss completed his senior season of high school with a state title.

24. West Virginia

Top 100 Recruits: No. 29 Shane Young (Penn Trafford, PA)

Impact Transfer: Brandon Williamson (Nassau Community College)

Other Ranked Recruits: Nathan Pennessi (Greater Latrobe, PA), 12th at 125; Mac Mancuso (Holy Spirit, NJ), 11th at 189

Other Notable Recruit: Cameron Galleher (Grafton, WV)

Commentary: Opening weight wrestlers and upper-weight wrestlers were the priority in this recruiting class for head coach Craig Turnbull. Young and Pennessi will get tutelage from lowerweight coach Danny Felix, who is the U.S. World Team representative in freestyle at 121 pounds (55 kg). Young, a three-time state champion, was runner-up at Junior Nationals this past summer in freestyle. Williamson is a two-time NJCAA All-American, including a national title at 285 pounds in 2008.

25. Lehigh

Top 100 Recruits: No. 9 Joey Napoli (Cumberland Valley, PA), No. 67 Austin Meys (Shenendehowa, NY)

Other Notable Recruit: Dave Della Torre (River Dell, NJ)

Commentary: Pat Santoro's first class at Lehigh, five wrestlers in all, packs a pretty heavy punch for being thin in quantity. Napoli was a 2008 state champion, and won the NHSCA Senior Nationals this past season. Meys is a three-time state champion and a big-time pinner in his scholastic days. Della Torre, a state finalist at 112 pounds this past season, projects into a long-term 125 for the Mountain Hawks.

Re: Seniors moving on to college - 08/02/09 10:33 AM

I have received a private message that Chase Nelson has decided on a college for next year. I know that Chase had many schools interested in him so I am going to wait to update the list for his college choice until I receive a second confirmation from either Chase, his high school coach, or the coach of the college that signed him.

Re: Seniors moving on to college - 08/09/09 11:36 AM

Wow, I never thought when I first started this list that it would get so big. It has been fun for me compiling the list and I have enjoyed the private messages and e-mails that I have had with the wrestlers, parents, high school coaches and college coaches who have sent me updates on these college decisions being made by the wrestlers. I appreciate all the assistance that was given me getting it compiled.

There are still some updates that will probably be made as there are some undecided wrestlers still on the list and I am sure there are some names that I do not yet have on the list of wrestlers from the Kansas class of 2009 that will be wrestling in college. I will continue to make these updates on the list as I am made aware of them.

But many of you in the next week or two are going to be leaving home and starting your college careers. I first want to congratulate all of the wrestlers on this list on your high school accomplishments both on the mat and in the classroom. You will need to take the same drive into your college and wrestling careers. College is an exciting time in life. I hope and believe you will find it to be one of the best times in your life. It will be a time of growth for you. You will meet new lifetime friends and have great experiences. Work hard on the mat and in the classroom and enjoy your college experience. Always remember that the most important thing is to excel in the classroom. I would like for all you wrestlers to read the following post that BigApple made yesterday on the topic of Academics and Athletics article. You might find it easier to read it on that actual topic than in the below quote box.

Quote:
I find this discussion quite interesting. Let me add my two cents worth.

I've never been a teacher, but have served as volunteer coach wherever I've lived or worked for most of my life since graduating from OU in 1973.

For 30 years I lived in Arizona, for 20 of those years I worked with high schools that were usually in affluent areas, but whose wrestling traditions weren't very strong. Having helped Duwayne Miller at Kapaun-Mt.Carmel from 1975-1978, I saw that it was possible to have high academic standards and outstanding wrestling teams.

At each school I've worked with since the early 1990s I have introduced and paid for with my own money the following award.

Outstanding Scholar & Wrestling Award. It is based 50 percent on the 1st semester's GPA (I don't use the cumulative GPA because I want kids who may not have started out being good students, but wind up becoming good students to have a chance), 25 percent on the team points scored during the regular season, and 25 percent on the team points scored at the state tournament.

I've always had a permanent plaque for the name of each year's winner each year, the winner each year gets a large plaque, plus dinner for two at an expensive restaurant, which is usually $100 to $150, this allows them to get an appetizer, most expensive, entree, dessert, pay the taxes and a 20 percent tip. I've been pleased that over the years previous winners would call me to find out who the winner was that year.

I have always told wrestlers I've coached you will not make a living wrestling, but you will learn two things in wrestling that will allow you to make a very good living as an adult: a strong work ethic and self-discipline.

It has been my experience that the best wrestlers on a team both high school and college were also some of the best students on the team. As an example I tell them about the 1974 NCAA championship team at OU. We had two 1st and one 2nd place wrestler. Gary Breece won at 118 pounds, he got a post graduate scholarship for from the NCAA and today is an orthodontist. Rod Kilgore won at 158, he was a finalist for a post graduate scholarship (at that time only 5 were awarded each year). Jeff Callard was 2nd at 167, he won a post graduate scholarship, and today is an engineering professor at OU in petroleum engineering.

Every kid who has won the award I've given has gone onto having a successful career. The only one who didn't attend college was dyslexic, but has a higly trained position in a hospital.

I've always viewed my job as a coach as to help them develop into becoming a successful adult. Wrestling separates the wheat from the chaff. You find out who has the necessary work ethic and self-discipline needed to become an outstanding wrestler, and hopefully student.

As to running for missing a practice, Duwayne Miller had only one hard clad rule; if you missed practice you had to make up the conditioning. Now if it was a prearranged approved absence he would work with the kid, if it was unexcused he didn't get to wrestle on the varsity until he made up the conditioning. Duwayne said he didn't recruit, so he didn't have the best athletes all the time. The only way KMC won most of the time was superior technique and conditioning.

Keep the conversation going, it is a worthwhile topic.

Enjoy the journey as it truthfully can be the time of your life. Take advantage of it and make it that way for yourselves. I will leave you with the comment I have made on most of the updates.

Congratulations and Good luck next year in your wrestling and academics at your college!

I got the confirmation from the UNO head coach. I will now update the above list for this signing.

Trent Cox, a three time Kansas State high school champion, is wrestling next year at the highly successful University of Nebraska at Omaha NCAA Division II program. This program has won several national team titles in recent years and has several former Kansas high school wrestlers who have been a major part of the team's success. There are quite a few Kansas high school wrestlers who are currently on the team. Coach Denney in his confirmation to me on Trent Cox wrestling at UNO next year said this:

Quote:
Yes, Trent Cox is wrestling for us at UNO. We are pleased to get him. Coach Denney

Congratulations to Trent Cox. Good luck to you in your wrestling and academics next year at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
