Newton TOC - 01/13/10 02:51 PM

Just wondering if anyone knows if there will be a link for updated brackets this weekend. I'm hoping the tournament directors will be using something like that PED software.By all rights I'm hoping both Newton and the bobcat use it.

Anyone out there have the time to list the ranked wrestlers in each weight for Newton like it was done for the Bobcat?

No link huh? bummer, KSHSAA makes enough stupid rules, why cant we have a rule that anyone hosting a tourney must post a link? every school use the same software and we would never have the weekly complaints about results not being turned in.

Re: Newton TOC - 01/16/10 04:49 AM

Wow, what a match between seibel and penka at 152 pounds in the semis. I know both penka and seibel and it was an amazing match to watch, as i would have to say that the entire crowd thought so too. There was a very controversial call that sent that match to overtime and i believe that Jason got hosed out of his mind. Everyone in the stands knew it and so did the ref. Does anyone feel the same way about this match? Once again great match, i wish the best of luck to these two the rest of the season and hopefully we see a rematch between them at state. Congrats Penka.

I think we could forgive and overlook a little spelling mistake on a post made at midnight on an internet talk forum! Its not like misspelling is a major crime like say Grand Theft or something!!

At 160 lbs. the Fifth place match was a double injury default.

Marr from Ark City and Curtis from Gardner both placed Sixth.

Re: Newton TOC - 01/17/10 02:18 PM

WOW!!! They placed all the way to 8th. Technically a wrestler could get beat out of this double elimination tournament TWICE!!!! I hope the "P" club gave out ribbons to everyone that entered the tournament, that would only be fair. When are tournaments, including STATE, going to stop coddling kids. Place the top 4, all other places do not matter.

Not following your thought process here. What is wrong with wrestling as many matches as is possible/practical? This tournament "cost" the same number of participation points whether a kid wrestled two, three or six times during the two days of competition.

Re: Newton TOC - 01/17/10 03:27 PM

Yea, that is pretty much a dumb comment. I am going to call the NCAA up and tell them to take away All-American honors from those 5-8 place kids today....

As a local team, we spent a lot of money to go the TOC. I can't even imagine how much Colby, Clay Center, Mill Valley, Gardner Egerton etc. had to spend to travel to this tournament. With this many teams 8th place is warranted as it does give extra matches to some kids. You might want to check which teams were there this week-end and figure out how tough this tourney really was and how 8th place was not bad at some weights.

Greg, My thought process, back in "the good ole days" it meant something to place at some of these tournaments. I just have a hard time wrapping my head around placing 8. Is everyone looking for QUALITY matches, or watered down QUANTITY matches? What were the medals? 1st Gold, 2nd, Silver, 3rd Bronze, 4th Copper, 5th Lead, 6th Wood, 7th Ribbon, and 8th Paper. Kind of like reverse Anniversaries. grin

Apples to Oranges, NCAA's is Nationwide. There are qualifiers to get into the tournament. So lets not keep track of Dumb comments.

It wasn't any tougher than when they only placed 4.

wrestling now is more competitve than it was when you were in high school beeson not saying all kids are better but you have more freestyle and just more wrestling than there was available not sure if i spelled that right

Re: Newton TOC - 01/17/10 04:17 PM

Then why have the 4x champions had such an increase since when I was in High School? If that is what you have to tell yourself to justify adding 8th go right ahead. More competitive does not mean better, it just means that they are more evenly matched. I'm not sure that is good.

Re: Newton TOC - 01/17/10 05:52 PM

"Placing" 5-8 has little to do with medals/awards as it does having the opportunity to wrestle another match or two. Quanity vs. quality is, IMO, not really critical to this discussion; the kids are there--might as well be wrestling, don't you think?
Posted By: Beeson

Re: Newton TOC - 01/17/10 10:21 PM

I am a little timid about bringing this up because I think someone might take it serious and implement it. Go ahead and place the top 8 for the matches. Let's not stop there though, anyone that loses their first two, should be thrown into a hard luck bracket, and place the top 8 their also. Lots of mat time and 50% of the participants get a medal. I have not figured out how to make the other 50% feel good yet, but I'm working on it.

Re: Newton TOC - 01/17/10 10:44 PM

I think you may be the first person ever on this forum arguing that FEWER matches should be wrestled!

Seems like your concern is giving medals for low placings; in your way of thinking this is rewarding mediocrity. However, IMO awarding/winning medals is NOT the point of wrestling the additional matches. If possible, shouldn't a kid get four (or more) matches over the two days they are there instead of two?

Actually your idea has merit; what is wrong with wrestling the maximum number of matches that are allowed? Kids who are not very good can use all the mat time they can get. Forget the medals.

And, no matter how you structure it, half of the kids will finish the day/week end with a loss.

Wrestling the maximum number of matches allowed is NOT another example of the "pussification" of America.

Re: Newton TOC - 01/18/10 12:31 AM

I'm not gonna get behind Beeson 100%, but we do coddle our kids a little too much with pats on the back. I think they need just as many reality checks, aka "you got beat becuase you don't work hard in practice", or whatever the reason might be, as they do pats on the back. I agree that sometimes an 8th place finish for one kid might be a huge accomplishment, whereas a 2nd place finish might be underachieving for another. Some kids will quit when you push them, others dig in and work harder. I made a post a couple of years ago when I returned from middle school duals, maybe it was Schoolboy duals, about a rather "out of shape" kid that was taking a beating, but kept coming back the next round for another beating. He was obviously not an athlete, but kept trying. There were a few matches where he didn't get pinned, thus saving his team some forfeit points if he hadn't wrestled at all. He caught my eye and I had to mention it. That is the type of situation, on the complete opposite side of this argument, that we need to balance out. Who knows, that kid may fill out and be an animal one day. Maybe not, but I bet he learned some valuable lessons from wrestling.

I like the idea of a hardluck bracket, like Tulsa Nationals used to do before they started their novice nationals tourney. Pretty generic medals, but mat time.

Posts: 563 ...as I was sitting there keeping score at the duals this weekend, the Montana Vs. Team KS Wildcats match was well in hand for Team Wildcats. Our heavyweight stepped on the mat against a kid from Montana that was in less than tip top physical condition. You know the type, man boobs, big spare tire, the type of kid that probably draws more than his share of teasing from kids. As I watched this kid wrestle our kid, who is a pretty salty, but maybe undersized, heavyweight, I began to think, and told Coach Locke: This kid probably goes to school and hears some punk kids tease him about his belly and his boobs, among other things. But here he is, at the National middle school duals, competing. This is a sport that very few people have the guts and mental toughness to take on. The brutal practices, the multiple beatings, among other things, that it takes to become a better wrestler and person. Taking beating after beating, and to continue to step on to that mat again and again. Like I told a few of our own kids that were struggling and getting thumped this weekend: that kid is here working to get better. All those punks that are talking trash are sitting at home watching cartoons and eating candy bars. I couldn't help but go over to this kid after the match (while he is laying down totally exhausted) and tell him "good job Big Man" and shake his hand. With apologies to Nicky Dikin ( we had the dual in hand), I was hoping that this kid wouldn't get pinned by Nicky. The kid went 3 full periods, and left it all on the mat. That is a kid that will be a winner on the mat at some point, and also when he gets out and becomes an employee, husband, father, grandfather, etc. My guess is that the NCAA heavyweight champ was a similarly built kid as a youngster. Look at him now.

Re: Newton TOC - 01/18/10 12:44 AM

And another thing to remember is that the kids don't make the rules, the adults do, so we have to be careful not to hang crap on a kid that is wrestling that match for 7th and 8th. It was top four only back when I was in school also, but let me tell you, I would much rather be a kid today than back then. As a whole, we are pushing each other to get better. Coaching is better, parents as a whole ask for more dedication from the kids, awards are better, and most teams got rid of the distraction of cheerleaders...........Well, maybe the cheerleaders would be something I would still want to keep around if I were a HS kid again.........The booze and lack of dedication is what I needed to get rid of!!!!

I don't believe in coddling kids either and I sometimes think we have become too soft in some areas but now you are just being an arse to get a rise out of people (it worked).

Guilty as charged. I did go to extremes to prove my point. The more I think of it though, instead of placing 8, maybe there should be a hardluck tourney. Kids that need it would get extra matches. I did notice that most of the kids wrestling for 5th-8th were upperclassmen. I know there are two, three, or even more points of view, but I can not understand how we place lower than 4th. Use the Hardluck for the kids that need extra mat time. There has to be a cut off, I personally think 4th is that cut off.

Re: Newton TOC - 01/18/10 01:51 AM

I understand the sentiment for believing we're spoiling the kids a bit. I just don't agree with it. Oh sure, I would rather have been someplace else Friday and Saturday than watching 300 kids roll around in Basehor for 25 hours. And I know it seems there were an exhausting number of kids on the podium posing for their photos. I will also tell you my son was one of those gangly, get pinned as much as he pinned, lanky, slowish shooting kids we all watched and cringed at, while we wondered why he ever wanted an 8th place medal at a JV tournament as a freshman.

He stuck with it and worked his tail off and stood on the podium in 4th place at the Bobcat holding a piece of pot metal he will treasure like the Ko-E-Noor diamond all his life. What do I know?

As a coach and a coaches kid who used to and still does enjoy the seeding meeting process when ran well. I think that in a 32 man bracket, seeding 8 was simple and logical, just as well as 8. Team races, back door/consolation bracket matches, bonus points, and how well the teams near you in team points just add to the fun of the whole sport.

For instance, when a Kansas Team places in the U.S. Top 10 it is a very proud moment. But they can't just get the team points by having a handful of wrestlers in the finals, they need people winning as many matches as they can at other weight classes, getting 3rd, 4th... all the way to 8th. And Newton TOC's 8th placers will be state placers in their respective classes.

This is comparing Apples to Oranges. The NCAA has 76 D1 schools, that have to go through qualifying tournaments. The tournament then is a 64 man bracket. Counting the Qualifying Tournaments, they are awarding the top 10% in the NATION. If you would like to compare it to a grading scale, The "A Students".

Newton had 25 teams participating, and awarded the top 30%. Continuing with our grading scale analogy, "C- Students".

6A has 31 Schools. They award the top 6, which is the top 18.75%, or B- Students. If they only awarded the top 4, they would award the top 12.5%, or B to B+ Students.

To answer your question, I think the NCAA's is just right.
