Melvin Douglas is probably best all time - upperweight (you pick)

Shawn Bunch 125-130 - never got the love as some others but overall one of the best lightweights to ever come from Kansas. I would put Bunch over Maynes if they are at the same weight.

Zac Roberson 130-135 - National Champ Div 1. @ 133lbs. Tough!!! Wish he would have kept wrestling internationally. Roberson over Napier and it is not even close.

Akin - 4x Div 1 AA (not too many of those walking around) + tons of international credentials to add. Another lightweight to fit in the mix somewhere.

Joe Johnson 152 - 2x Div 1 champ / 1x runner up + international credentials

Matt Murray 145 - Div 1 Runner Up (Beat Teyon Ware in semis to get there)

Eric Luedke 171 + - junior college champ / 2x Div 1 AA (3rd place seinor season)

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 06/28/12 12:15 PM

I would agree with you on these, the reason I had some of these listed are, becuase I made my short list off of High School wrestling. Many of these wrestlers actually had more accolades in college then they did while wrestling in high school, I had Bunch on my orginal list as well, but when I went to edit it down to one per weight I left him off.

And I am not sure why I left Roberson off. I agree one of the best ever.

If you are only talking high school careers Justin Ware should be on that list.

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 06/28/12 06:40 PM

I though about Justin Ware as well, but I am somewhat biased for my brother Lyle Geyer at 140, It is difficult to choose between them, as Ware is a 4x state champion, and a SR Natl Champ, and Geyer is a 3x champion, and a SR Natl Champ. Geyer was also OW of SR Natl in '92, this is why I have him over Ware, but honestly you could go with either one. JMO

Forgot to mention this one:

Temoer Terry - McPherson High School

Temoer Terry (born June 12, 1975 in McPherson, Kansas) is a former college wrestling champion. Wrestling out of the University of Nebraska,[1] (1994–1998), he had a collegiate record of 100-24. Terry had a record of 79-3 at McPherson High School. Terry has also coached at the college level for American University. Also coached for George Mason University[2]

Is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma.[3] 3 time All-American,[4] 2 time Big 8 Champion, 1992 Jr. Greco Roman Nationals-4th, 1992 Jr. Greco Roman World Championships-4th, 1992 Greco Roman World Team Trials-Champion, 1991 Cadet Nationals-Doubles Champion, 7-time Southern Plains Regional Champion, 3-Time Kansas State H.S. Ware handled temore terry in the state finals in high school the video is on arkcitywrestlers reunion on facebook. he may not have done what he should in college but only bo maynes has more kids titles to his name by 1 and he did win senior nationals and started for nebraska as a freshman and made it to nationals just didnt stick it out

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 07/09/12 07:07 PM

And also in ac circle eddie borror is talked about more highly about than ware. just didnt always make the right decisions

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 07/10/12 12:26 AM

It's hard to argue with a lot of these. Temoer was a bad man. I think Ware was at least a couple years older than Temoer, wasn't he? Melvin Douglas is still #1 in my book.

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 07/10/12 01:19 AM

Temoer Terry & Justin Ware were both outstanding high school wrestlers, combining for seven state championships. Temoer was a freshman when Ware, who was a senior sophomore, defeated him in the finals.

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 07/10/12 05:27 PM

Mr. Juby- actually Ware was only a sophomore(92) when Temoer was a freshman(93)

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 07/11/12 12:23 PM

Temoer achieved much greater success at another level. A much tougher level.

If I remember correct. Justin Ware was a senior in 1992, as he won senior nationals that year, Kansas had 3 national champs that year. Justin Ware, Justin Thaw, and Lyle Geyer

I think the question was best HS wrestler. And to add to the list where is Roy O. if I'm not mistaken the first of his 4 state titles as a freshman was at like 157lbs. now that's a beast.

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 07/13/12 01:30 AM

I think Charles Ekey should be mentioned at 140. He was a two time State Champion and a two time National Champ for Fort Hays State.

L Geyer- I could have stated that better. Justin was a sophomore when Temour was a freshman, the year they wrestled in the state championship. Ware graduated in 1992 and Temour graduated in 1993

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 07/21/12 11:49 PM

Ware, Duell, Roderick, and Roberson in no particular order. Been so many. Stan Falkender of St. Francis was exceptional. Bo Maynes was awfully good. I coached against Roberson, Duel (both of them), Akin, Bunch, Layton, Oeser, and most of the rest and saw all of them except for Myron Roderick. Melvin Douglas was as good as any of them for sure. I really don't have a clue how you could pick between all of those great kids (men now). The more you talk about it the more of them you remember. Lampe and Lowery and the epic matches they had. The most impressive that I ever coached against were Ware, Roberson, and Duell. Put some pretty good kids up against those boys and didn't have a shot. God it was fun trying though.

Did not coach against Caldwell but man I saw a lot of him and I would put him up against any of them on any given night. How would you pick?

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 07/26/12 03:49 PM

I would say Matt Treaster of Beloit should be mentioned here. 4 x state champ and NCAA D.1 All American as a junior for Navy before suffering career ending neck injury his senior year. Doug Duell finished H.S. at 119 and teammate Chas Ekey won nationals once at Fort Hays State.

Re: best kansas wrestlers of all time - 07/30/12 12:50 AM

I just ran across this thread. To not have Justin Ware in this list, completely invalidates the list. I grew up with Justin, went to the same small elementary school with Justin, went to wrestling tournaments every Saturday with him. I never saw him lose a match. I saw him win HS Nationals with a pin in the finals. Not until college did I see him lose. I was wrestling DII in North Carolina at the time. He was at Nebraska. Nationals was held at UNC. He came in ranked #6 in the country as a freshman. Record of 24-3 or something like that. He had wrestled Alan Fried very close. Justin lost his opening two matches. They were nail biters. I know he lost to Shannon Gillespie in a really close match and to a guy from Boise State. I thought Justin should have won. After day 1 of the tournament, I was hanging out with the team and all they could do was praise him and talk about how good he was going to be. In my opinion, he could have been NC at least 2 times.
As far as Temoer... I saw Justin wrestle him a few times. Did I mention I never saw Justin lose until college? I bet if you look at Temoer's record, probably at least 3 losses were to Justin. We were in the same conference.
As far as Justin not sticking it out. That's a tough criteria to add. If he was anything like me, he just needed a break. I know I did. I got hurt, took a year off and never got back. Dont hold that against him. But... If we're talking best HS school wrestlers he is in there.
