bishop carrol won perry tournment of champions so you might not put all your chips on st thomas, and the goddard and bishop will be settled at derby tournment.

Scare you've got a point. STA Strength starts at 130 and had a placer in every wt. For BC to win State , they will need some help, from the heavier wts. Some of the area wrestlers will do very well at the heavier wt. Last year it was very evident the area regional was the best 1) BC 2) Kapaun 3)Valley Center. This Year Ark City , and Hutchinson will be in the mix. I
think that the tougher Regionals, makes the kids battle harden.

STA's strength starts at 119. They had 11 placers at JOCO with 9 in the finals and 6 champions. BC has an edge over STA at 103, 112 and 140. 145 will also be close with Detmer vs. Millstead.

Yeah STA is a good team but the two tourny's they set records at are not even in the same argument as the perry tourny, you have ponca city midwest city and catoosa that could all make runs at any division in kansas, but well see sta always comes in looking like they are gonna win it and how many times have they? but in all it's great to have this topic besides goddard no one is half as powerable as 5a this year andale got smoked at ark city tourny next to last i believe and norton has to be down some this year guess well see at newton.

1 St. Thomas Aquanis- they have the most complete team, like someone said in a post before, they had put 9 in the finals with 6 winning it at JOCO.
2 Goddard- they have the two prodigy wrestlers, fisher, and both means houlden have beaten some really good wrestlers so far in the season *means over bueler, and houlden over hentzen
3 Bishop Carroll- they have 4 excellent wrestlers in the kellers, arnold, and detmer. besides them, they dont really have anything

if your talking about having the BEST team in kansas, i would say that st thomas is, but if your talking about the teams with the most presegious wrestlers then i would said goddard (caldwell and beard) and carroll (twins, arnold, detmer) would be better off.

its too bad that aquanis doesnt come down to the derby tournament so they could settle it once and for all.

It will be settled!!

Goddard beat STA easily at blue valley nw last year and this years team is stronger! Notimer did not mention Bonewell and Elliott. Both could win state.

They will also be stronger than you think at the first 2 weights.

Check the Derby results for more info on this. ... Blessings Jayhawkster

I think Goddard is coming to the BV Huskie Tournament again. Just have to wait and see the Derby results. All these schools have outstanding kids and I just love watching the matchups.
As Bracketologist it is more fun when the teams are closer in scoring. I am sure this will happen down the road. I am not a betting man - but I'll be cheering for STA all the way.

Happy New Year

BC spanking Goddard will not happen. Goddard is just too strong at too many weights! I just can't see them beating Goddard at Derby.

I'm not sitting anywhere near the bracketologist/smokeycabin group - they make me a nervous wreck!

The best team in the state isn't decided at Derby. There are several great teams, but don't necessarily tag the winner as the best...just the best that weekend. It's a long season and some tournaments set up for different results than others. State matters, like it or not.

Smokey, very classy post. STA is always a great team, and I think this might be one of their best squads yet. BC and Derby are tough as nails, too. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the great teams and individuals, but don't have time to list them all. Of course I'll be pulling for my favorite team and coaches in Goddard Blue.

It was two different teams last year. I believe both teams lost an individual state champion to graduation. I know Aquinas did with Andy Hurla. I am sure that Goddard is stronger but Caldwell and Beard are probably not going to score that many more points than they did last year. On Aquinas side I think they are also stronger and I think they have several seniors and juniors who are bigger and stronger than a year ago and who will score more points at Blue Valley NW's tournament. Last year Aquinas won the 2005 Johnson County Classic with 282.5 to BVNW at 261.5 in second. This year in the 2006 Johnson County Classic Aquinas scored 348 points setting the tournament record and Gardner Edgerton took second at 200 points. But I would also agree with Mr. Jilka that at this year's BV Northwest tournament, all that will be determined is who will be the better team that day.

To me in settling the question as to who is the best team in the State, it would be great if we had a Dual style state tournament. I am not going to claim that either Goddard or Aquinas is the best team in the state this year. I think if you were to select the top 16 teams for a dual style tournament that both teams would have a good chance of being selected. Based on the teams that each team fielded the last wrestling week in December (Aquinas - JoCo Classic, Goddard - Emporia) the matchups in a dual between Aquinas and Goddard would be:

Listing name, year, records for Aquinas the record is their individual record before the classic, place at 12/16/06 tournament Emporia for Goddard and JoCo Classic for Aquinas.

103
STA-Jimmy Bryant 9 7-4 5th place
GRD-Tyler Selves 9 5-5 DNP

112
STA-Joe Rausch 10 6-4 DNP
GRD-Logan Rotha 11 6-5 4th place

119
STA-Connor McCarthy 11 9-3 3rd place
GRD-Eric Moody 9 8-5 6th place

125
STA-Jake Walker 9 7-5 6th place
GRD-Tyler Caldwell 10 10-0 1st place

130
STA-Pat Gregg 11 6-3 DNP
GRD-Steve Burns 10 5-4 DNP

135
STA-Phillip Henes 11 12-0 2nd place
GRD-Brent Fisher 11 9-0 1st place

140
STA-Skyler Scott 12 8-5 1st place
GRD-Mitchell Means 10 10-0 1st place

145
STA-Mark Millstead 12 11-0 1st place
GRD-Ryan Houlden 10 9-1 1st place

152
STA-Scott Markey 12 12-1 2nd place
GRD-Brandon Bonewell 11 8-3 2nd place

160
STA-Paul Markey 12 11-1 1st place
GRD-Boaz Beard 10 10-0 1st place

171
STA-RJ Nill 12 11-1 1st place
GRD-Roman Villegas 11 5-5 5th place

189
STA-Jed Mamie 12 11-0 1st place
GRD-Dusty Elliott 12 5-4 2nd place

215
STA-Mike Hammer 12 12-0 2nd place
GRD-Morgan Kessler 12 3-4 DNP

285
STA-Jacob Nowak 10 0-0 1st place
GRD-Joe Irion 11 3-4 DNP

This would be a good dual to see. I think there would be some great matchups. I am too biased to give a prediction on the outcome. Too bad it is not going to happen.

WOW, that would be a very fun dual to watch! If the best team was decided by duals then I don't think Carrol would be able to hang with STA and Goddard. But Carrol can rack up some major bonus points in tournaments with their good wrestlers, so I wouldn't count them out of any tournament. Out of the three I've only seen my Saints wrestle and they certainly looked ready for any challenge.

Just imagine how intense state would be if Goddard were in 5A.....
