Koehns win titles at SEK tournament

CHANUTE - Tyler and Derek Koehn captured individual championships, and Pittsburg High School placed fourth in the SEK Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Chanute High School.
The Purple Dragons scored 102 points, one behind third-place finisher Blue Valley. Bishop Carroll won the team crown, and Valley Center was second.
"This is the highest we've placed in this tournament,'' Dragons head coach Scott Rieck said. "In fact, in all of our tournaments, we've placed the highest since I've been here (2000). We've been in the top seven in every tournament.
Derek Koehn won the 140-pound title with a decision over Carroll's Mitch Arnold, the Class 5A 140-pound state champion last season. Arnold beat Koehn earlier this season in the Derby Tournament.
Tyler Koehn, 152 pounds, posted a 7-1 decision over Schwind of Valley Center, a third-place state medalist last year. His 4-0 showing pushed his career victory total to 102, joining Derek as the only PHS wrestlers to post 100 career wins.
The Dragons' Jordan Brown took second at 145 pounds, losing by injury default in the second period of the final.
Brad Sommerfelt placed third at 160 pounds, and freshman Daniel Blair was fourth at 135. Sommerfelt won by decision in his third-place match, and Blair lost in overtime.
Three Pittsburg wrestlers went 1-2 in the tournament - Prince Jones at 130, Buck Wilcox at 171 and Cougar VonFeldt at 189.
"They all contributed to our team score,'' Rieck said. "All the boys wrestled really well. We still have some ground to make up before state, but obviously we don't want to peak yet.
"They are pushing themselves real hard, and they wrestled hard and physical. They are pushing themselves every match ... if we lose a match, the kid has earned it.''
The Dragons are idle until Feb. 8 when they have a double dual with Labette County and Parsons in Altamont.

who did detmer lose to?

Detmer placed first at 145 lbs., defeating Jordan Brown from Pittsburg in the finals.

Detmer's one loss came to Hynick of Rose Hill in the finals of Derby.
