Tanner is hanging in there! Seems to me he has a couple of pretty gutsy matches!

Not only did Max Askren lose his first round match to Brandon Halsey (Cal State Bakersfield) he also lost to Bucknell’s Eric Lapotsky 5-2 in the first round of wrestlebacks Thursday night.

Askren will go down in history as one of, if not the first #1 seeded wrestler to lose his first two matches.

On a side note it was a great win for Halsey who transferred to Bakersfield from Cal State Fullerton after Fullerton dropped wrestling.

Halsey transferred from Fresno St. not Fullerton. Fullerton still has a wrestling program.

Greg Jones was UNDEFEATED #1 the year they were in KC, and that insane athlete from Miami, Ralph Everett of Hofstra, beat him in OT....I'm pretty sure Jones lost his next match as well!

Matt Lindland from Nebraska was undefeated and ranked #1 when he was upset by a Boston University wrestler in Ames, Iowa around 1998. BU wrestler tossed him 2 or 3 times for five point moves.
It was a pigtail match and the other wrestler had to win to pull Lindland through. He lost. One and done.

The NCAA Tournament in 2003 was in Kansas City and Greg Jones from West Virginia, after losing his first round match defeated Hunter Guenot from Bloomsburg 11-6 and Eric Hauan from Northern Iowa 6-3 before losing to Rashad Evans from Michigan State, 3-2.

Jones and Everett both finished the tournament with a 2-2 records.

NCAA Championships Q and A: Jay Hammond
Craig Sesker USA Wrestling
03/16/2007

Have a question about something historical during the NCAA Wrestling Championships, Jay Hammond is the man to ask. The noted wrestling historian and author attended his first NCAA Tournament in 1964 and has been to 25 national meets. His book – The History of Collegiate Wrestling – was a big hit among fans of the sport. He works with the National Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla., and writes for Amateur Wrestling News.

TheMat.com: It is pretty rare for a No. 1 seed to lose – it’s only happened 13 times in NCAA Tournament history. Top seed Max Askren of Missouri went 0-2 at 197 on Thursday. Has a No. 1 seed ever gone 0-2 in the NCAAs?

Hammond: To the best of my knowledge, it has not happened. Until 1996, we didn’t have a true double-elimination format. I didn’t see Askren’s second match, but in the first match it just looked like a bad case of freshmanitis.
