It was a slap to the side of the head. I dont think there was a cause, I think he was just trying to set up a takedown. It wasnt that bad of a slap. I seen em slapping the front of the head a lot harder yesterday.

I was at the 321A and witnessed one in particular. A kid from Stockton didn't get a call and lost his match. He refused to shake hands not once, twice, but three times. And the third time was just a hand slap to the victor. His team was penalize one team point for unsportsman like, but it was definitley cause to eject him from the tournament. The ref was more tolerant than I would have been.

Can you find a rule that says they must shake hands?

Rule 6: Conduct of Matches (page 33)
Section 5: End-of-match Procedure
Article 2

Art. 2... The wrestlers shall shake hands and the referee shall declare the winner by raising the winning wrestler’s hand. (Photo 37)

Ejection from a match can only come from flagrant misconduct.

Failing to shake hands is defined as unsportsmanlike, but not flagrant misconduct.

At the official's discretion, repeated occurences of unsportsmanlike behavior may lead to a flagrant misconduct call, but failing to shake hands by itself is generally not considered cause.

This same scenario occured at the NJCAA national tournament, except the referee did eject the wrestler and the lead official had to over-rule his call and reinstate the wrestler.

Perhaps the referee wasn't more tolerant, just more knowledgeable as it wasn't "definitley (sic) cause to eject him from the tournament."

I would call refusing to shake hands repeatedly a flagrant act.

I saw one instance at 4a where a kid ran off the mat as soon as the match was over and didn't even bother going back to the center. It's sad when a kid ends a good season in such a bad manner because just about all the kid accomplished throughout the season is forgotten about as that becomes the last image of the wrestler.

Scott has been wrestling since he was 7 years old. In all these years he has never committed an unsportsmanlike act, nor has he ever been called for unsportsmanlike conduct. The call on Saturday was unnecessary roughness. It was not a slap to the face it was a slap to the headgear. In my opinion it was a call that 90% of Kansas officials would not have called, and 99% of officials from surrounding states would not have called.

I agree. Scott has always been a gentlemen on the mat. He is a very deserving three-time state champ.
Congrats Scott!!

What you chhose to call it is irrelevant. The rule book does not define it as such and therefore it is not. Period.

I agree it is unacceptable behavior. But, by itself, rather repeated or not, is not grounds for ejection from a tournament.

I believe Mr Salyer made my argument for me. What I chhose (sic) to call it is my opinion and hardly irrelevant.

what the heck, following the rules is over-rated anyway. you want to kick a kid out even though, by the rule book's definition of unsportsmanlike behavior vs flagrant misconduct, you have no grounds to do so, go ahead.

i've always thought three extra back points should be awarded if a participant holds his opponent in near fall criteria for more than one minute and fifty seconds in any period.....not really a rule, but as long as we're making crap up as we go, let's start calling this too.

You clearly have some issues to work out. I hope you do so. Good luck to you.

I had a kid wrestle Scott in the kids program in Topeka a few years ago named Carlson and he took Scott down first and then Scott got up and beat him but after the match I talked to Scott and he was as nice as any wrestler we have been around and to say anything bad about him makes me think they have a bone to pick with him and mabe got his butt kicked by Scott.
Any way good luck and you will make a great wrestler where ever you go.
