I would have to say 12 & under 140 Braden Watts from Coffeyville beating Andy Jewell from Salina in the finals.

Beau Hentzen (Brawlers) won by major decision over Colt Rogers (Smith County) (Maj 10-1)

El Scorcho, if that's really your name, why don't you check the brackets yourself! The two guys that were in the finals at 135 were both HS non-state placers, but wrestled awesomely. This was the weight to watch, unless you were stuck on watching 8U.

1st BEAU HENTZEN from Brawlers
--135 JR for Carroll
--Did not qualify for 5A state
2nd NICK HOCKETT from Cherryvale
--135 ?? for Cherryvale
--Won 1 match at 321A state
3rd COLT ROGERS from Smith County
--125 SO for Smith Center
--1st at 321A state
4th TREVOR OLIVER from Osborne
--????
--Did not qualify for 321A state
5th CODY SHAVLIK from Panther Elite
--125 SO for Derby
--3rd at 6A state
6th SAL TOVAR from Emporia
--125 JR for Emporia
--2nd at 5A state

C C,

It sounds like you followed the U16 135lb bracket pretty close and probably saw the match between Hentzen and Rogers. Any theories how a 135lb 5A non-State qualifer beats a 125lb 321A State Champion four weeks after the High School season 10-1? It is obvious the Smith County wrestler moved up in weight while the Carroll wreslter held weight. Did that seem to be the difference, was competition level during the high school season the difference, or was it just one wrestler's day and not the other? Just curious on your thoughts.

You may not think so but is this not an opinion question? My son has wrestled Andy and I know Andy is a very good wrestler. Braden is so tall and lanky he is awkward to wrestle. It was a good match.

I would have to say that the 14u 205 pounder from Columbus losing in the finals was at least a small upset.

The fact that girls are forced to wrestle at state in the middle of the week is laughably sexist.

From what I've seen of tough competition after the HS season (Metro Classic, Senior Classic, HS Nationals, KS Wrestling State), it pays to keep your weight consistent. I think it is half mental and half physical. The 125's that moved up to 135 struggled at the tournament, and their goals could have been to see some different competition. Taking nothing from Hentzen, he could quite possibly be the best non-state qualifier in the state and wrestled like a champion.

Thanks for the feedback C C. Sounds like Hentzen put things together for this one. I would liked to have seen a few of these matches. Nothing better than watching some good wrestling, except for spending time with my family that is. Thanks again.

Don't know if weight is the answer or not but thats twice in 2 years Rogers was beaten at kids state. Both times by Carroll wrestlers that didn't place at high school state.Last year he lost to Jake Mainz in the finals 7-2, i believe was the score not positive though.

Whatever it was, it was real.
1st -- Did not qualify for 5A state
2nd -- Won 1 match at 321A state
3rd -- 1st at 321A state
4th -- Did not qualify for 321A state
5th -- 3rd at 6A state
6th -- 2nd at 5A state
I would say that it's tough to go into kids state at a higher weight and compete against guys that are focused on proving something. I wouldn't necessarily discourage a wrestler from doing it however.
