It's showing that Atticus withdrew and was scratched from the bracket. Does anyone know why they never wrestled some of the freestyle finals?

they did round robin style and for some they seperated them into two groups and the two first places would go for 1st and 2nd and the 2nd placers would go for 3rd and 4th

That is the format for pooled tournaments. They just didn't finish some of them. I'm sure that State will run smoother.

They where saying that they expected about 150 and with the walk-ins had around 260. This show the interest is building in the Summer program. Been to allot of tournaments through the years, and I'm not one that will say they should of done this or that, because we all have been part of long drawn out days. But maybe it has got the point that we require everyone to pre-register so we can have enough mat space.

While you really hate to throw stones at those who volunteer their time it is the frustration that many felt yesterday that destroys the interest in spring/summer wrestling. The excuses all sounded good but everyone knows with five surfaces and only 250 wrestlers, action should have been started by 10am and finished by 3pm. The finals matches from the pools were abandoned to start Greco and by 6pm there were maybe 40 wrestlers left. My son loves wrestling as much or more than anyone but by 5pm he was begging me to leave. There was far too much "dead" mat time. We need a team of people to run all of these spring events. You CANNOT "wing it" and hope and pray it will work out. The wrestlers should have been grouped by age and ability in brackets of four, preferably five and round robins should have been utilized from top to bottom. When the event isn't state or a qualifier we do not need pairings. The wrestlers need mat time. The organization of this event was comprised of fine people who are great wrestling supporters but the plan and organization was so severly lacking that results may have done more damage than the good they set out to do. Next year lets get a swat team of experts to run all of the spring events so the kids can enjoy some great mat time without sitting in a gym for 12 hours.

Will,

I couldn’t agree with you more about the “team” of volunteers to gather and run these events. I am not going to make but one excuse for this event and that was the failure to pre-register and over 100 walk-ups that showed up between 9:00 and 10:00 wanting to wrestle. I sincerely apologize to all that had to endure our inability to “wing it “ as you stated. We had a plan… the plan failed! All the “kids” that volunteered their Saturday to help out this cause deserve a thank you for their dedication. These young adults could of been out doing what most teenagers normally do on Saturdays... NOTHING!

I promise all that we have learned tricks and made many mistakes over the last three years. My only hope is that people understand that it is not a picnic to run two events in the same day with limited amount of people willing to pitch in and roll up their sleeves to get it done.

So to all the people that are disappointed I am personally sorry! To all the people that helped us out… I am truly grateful!

Mark

No need for apologies Red. Most of us know that great efforts were made to accomodate all the wrestlers walking up to enter. There was plenty of notice on this very forum for everyone to pre-register.

There are growing pains with anything like using a new program, was it frustrating?sure was! But heck we were there to wrestle, I think each of my boys got in at least 6 matches and had an absolutely fantastic time in the condensed greco side of things

Regarding Freestyle and Greco. The state is making the right strides to get our schedule in line to get national teams done earlier etc and coincide with our neighboring states. Now we have to coordinate the back end, get our kids division to be just a kids division, eliminate high school aged kids wrestling in our state kids tourney, bring in the 6 and under if needed.

Start freestyle/greco during that time period. Get coaches up to date on teaching olympic style skills, get clincs for wrestlers, get tournament coordinators, pairers, and officials trained.

I saw a lot of people wanting to get their first freestyle and greco matches in just one week before the state tournament, to me that is more of a concern than having to endure wrestling all day in the gym.

Want to say thank you to all of the volunteers that put on the tournament this weekend in Manhattan. We were one of the last matches of the evening.....was it a long day, yes BUT my 9 year old son absolutely loved it. He got 3 freestyle and 5 greco matches. It was a great opportunity to get good mat time. Thank you very much for giving these kids the opportunity!

My biggest recommendation for all tournaments(this applies to both folkstyle and freestyle/greco events) is two fold.....

1. Mandate pre-registration. I know some will argue that we will cut some kids out but if everyone knows you have to pre-register then they will do it. If we continue to allow walk-ups then we will always have them.

2. Allow Friday night satellite weigh ins. This worked very well this weekend from a competitors perspective. We didn't have to get the kids up extra early or spend the $$$ to get a hotel room.

If you combine these 2 recommendations then the people hosting event can get the brackets ready the night before. All you have to deal with the morning of the tournament is last minute scratches.

Please do not take this as a criticism of any kind on the tournament this weekend. Like I said, we were one of the last matches and my son absolutely loved it. Lots of great mat time. I really appreciate the effort everyone gives to pull these things off.

Also, want to thank Gonz Medina and Blue Chip. Been watching these boards for a couple of years now and I don't think we give him and his company enough thanks for what they do for supporting kids wrestling. Gonz and his staff are fantastic! Thanks for the cool shirts this weekend and the year long support you give!

Will,Shawn,Klint. Thanks for imput. I will use your recommendations to inprove. I have put on 10 FS-GR tournaments in Topeka and this was my 3rd meet in Manhattan. This was my most fustrating one for me. We had a plan and we really would have been OK. But I did not plan for several things. I did not get Mark Miller enough help in the computer area. I should have arranged with the school district to use other gym. Was I prepared for so many walk up? No I was not. These are all issues I asure You I can fix. I know I can now lay out 8 full mats at MHS (reserve gyms in future) Go to pre-regrister by Friday 5 p.m.
I really beleive if you offer a good tournament.People will particpate. I think everyone knows as Tournament Director we make mistakes and I know we can make this meet a showcase. Example Gonz Mendina gave me: My 1st yr at MHS we had 100+ and everyone was upset the time it was taking. 2nd yr we had 175+ and we had no computers and used 4 man brackets (2 gyms) finished by 4 p.m. 3rd yr. I thought since USAW State was using track wrestling, we should also. 260+ entry's. Big Mistake on my part should have stayed with the paper & pencil and 4 man brackets. Trust me I learn'ed a lot this weekend. I do want all of you to come back. RMG

With the history of this event along with the quality of those involved, I think the Kansas community will continue to support this tournament. As Will had mentioned, with RMG and Red's reputation, we can all get over this one and expect a much improved format next year! It sure is refreshing to see a quick response about decisions that were made.

I think, with an experienced crew, we could still allow walk ups on Saturday morning. End the weigh-in at 8am and wrestling could/should start by 9am. Allow registration at the remote sites. Have them set up on line to complete the registration and collect the funds. We just need to get a team together to work together. There is no way we can expect a tournment to get better when it only happens once per year.

Gonz,

We will be back for sure! As a coach and father I greatly appreciate the effort and time that you and the volunteers put into this tournament. I hope I did not come across as negative in my earlier post. That definitely was not the intent.

Also, thank you for having full mats for all the kids to wrestle on. I know the little guys really appreciated having a bigger wrestling surface.

Thanks again!
