University Of Northern Illinois season-opening Wrestle-Offs - 10/31/2008

..., "After bumping down a weight class to 133 pounds, a role previously filled by two-time MAC Most Outstanding Wrestler Pat Castillo, redshirt sophomore Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./Wichita) pinned Chris Smith (Portland, Maine/Deering) in the second period.

"Last year, that option wasn't as available," Grant said of DeShazer's move to 133. "With his weight down, he can pull that strength card out, and he's quite a pinner.",...

Redshirt sophomore Tristen DeShazer leads the Huskies with five wins by fall this season.

Wrestling Travels to Omaha for Kaufman/Brand Open
Trio of Huskies looking for second tournament championship of the year.

Nov. 21, 2008

DeKALB - The Northern Illinois wrestling team will be participating in the largest single-day collegiate meet of the season, the Kaufman/Brand Invitational, at the Lee & Helena Sapp Fieldhouse, Saturday.

Competition starts at 9 a.m. and is expected to have over 600 participants from more than 40 schools. All three NCAA divisions will be represented along with several NJCAA institutions.

While the Huskies did not participate in last season's event, at the 2006 Kaufman-Brand Open, the Huskies had nine placewinners. Redshirt sophomores Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./Wichita West) and Pat McClemore (Hinckley, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) both participated at that event and each placed fifth at the 133 and 141 pound weight classes, respectively.

DeShazer as well as redshirt sophomore Vince Castillo (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) had strong showings at the Pointer Open. Castillo won the 141 pound weight class and is 6-1 on the year. DeShazer made his competitive debut at his natural weight class of 133 pounds and finished second. He is now 6-2 with five pins this season.

After the Kaufman/Brand Open, NIU travels to Northwestern to face the Wildcats, Dec. 4.

DeShazer Upset Highlights Day One at Midlands

Redshirt sophomore picks up late fall over seventh seed Jimmy Conroy.

Dec. 29, 2008

EVANSTON, Ill. - Redshirt sophomore Tristen DeShazer had collected eight of his 10 wins by fall entering the 46th Midlands Championships, Monday. His ninth pin proved to be one of the biggest of his young career.

DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./Wichita West) stuck Pittsburgh's Jimmy Conroy, the 14th-ranked 133-pounder in the nation, late in the third period to improve to 11-5. DeShazer went 1-1 on the day, and he will engage Cleveland State's Josh Palivoda, who holds an 8-11 record when competition resumes Tuesday.

The fall highlighted Northern Illinois' opening day at the Midwest's biggest wrestling tournament, where the Huskies sit in 32nd place with five team points. Iowa, the defending national champion, leads the way with 43 points.

The Huskies wrap-up Midlands, Tuesday, Dec. 30, and open the dual season of 2009 against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Missouri Baptist, Jan. 10 in Edwardsville.

Four Pins Launch DeShazer to Sixth Place Finish at Midlands

Redshirt sophomore pins sixth and seventh seeds in tournament.

EVANSTON, Ill. – Tristen DeShazer turned heads by turning shoulders, as he recorded four pins to earn a sixth-place finish at the 46th Midlands Wrestling Championships, Tuesday.

The top finisher for Northern Illinois, DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./Wichita West) won five consecutive matches after losing his opening bout. He followed the loss by pinning the No. 7 seed Jimmy Conroy of Pittsburgh (6:30), Monday, then earned falls over Josh Palivoda of Cleveland State (5:41), sixth-seeded Kyle Hutton of Old Dominion (3:16), and Todd Schravrian of Missouri (6:33), Tuesday. DeShazer also won by forfeit over American’s Jason Borshoff, before dropping the fifth-place match to No. 1 seed Jimmy Kennedy of Illinois. He finished the tournament with a 5-2 record, and improved to 15-6 overall, with 12 wins by fall.

“It’s very difficult to lose that first match and come all the way back to place,” head coach Dave Grant said. “It takes a lot of heart to come back and do something like that, because it is so many matches.”
