Student who collapsed at basketball game dies

A 15-year-old student who collapsed Tuesday night at the basketball games between Wichita Heights and Bishop Carroll died later at Wesley Medical Center, school officials said Wednesday.

The student attended East, but his sister plays for Heights, district spokeswoman Susan Arensman said.

He collapsed between the boys' and girls' games, Arensman said. He had a history of heart problems, she said, and spent a couple of semesters doing schoolwork at home because of his health.

Counselors were made available to students at East and Heights, Arensman said.

At Carroll, principal Vanessa Harshberger said school president Leticia Nielsen informed students of the deaths of the student who collapsed at the basketball game and of a 15-year-old Southeast High student who was struck and killed in a crosswalk in east Wichita late Tuesday afternoon.

The Carroll students then prayed for the teens who died.
