Did they ever make the announcement as to who this award went to? I didn't hear it. We were doing quite a bit of celebrating after getting our trophy. Anyway, if anybody knows I'm very curious to know who got it. Thanks!

A split between those two with seem the only right thing to do. Therefore, no telling who they gave it to!

Maple went 83-0 his last two seasons. This year i believe only 3 opponents were not teched or pinned by him (and for looking for tougher competition he bumped to 140 several times). In his finals match he teched his opponent 17-2 in around 2:30. If that is not dominant I don't know what is. In all actuality, nobody has even come close to beating him since McCormick beat him in the semi's his sophomore year. Sounds pretty outstanding to me.

Good arguments for Maple. What was his career won/loss record? I'm just curious.

So, Church - you are a coach. Do you know who actually got the award? And congrads to you and your team for a great season!

No doubt, Maple is the most outstanding wrestler in 6A. In fact, in the finals match this year he almost had a tech fall in the first period. Very impressive.

He is a great kid on and off the mat. He has been fun to watch.

I won't argue against Maple. He is an incredible wrestler and young man. I will say that "No doubt, Maple is the most outstanding wrestler in 6A." is pretty bold. Tyler Caldwell did beat the 5A champ, 6A runner up at 171, pinned the 321A state champ, majored the 4A runner up and 3rd place finisher. He also went undefeated winning some dang tough tournaments. Boaz didn't get to wrestle as many studs from other classes, but was equally as dominant. It's too bad that this award only goes to one guy, but it's equally as cool that I doubt all three of these young men care too much about it. The great ones usually do not.

With all of the negativity on this board, I'd like to say that I feel like the wrestlers from all of the teams displayed a lot of class and honor this weekend. I saw many, many more acts of good sportsmanship than of poor. It's an emotional sport, and kids will sometimes make mistakes. Let's not dwell on that, but celebrate all of the great young men and their dedication to the greatest sport on earth.

Caldwell was impressive as well. The OW is subjective and all of the wrestlers mentioned here could be considered for OW for the year; however, the outstanding wrestler of the tournament, in my opinion was Maple.

I can't wait until next year to see more great wrestling.

For me, this is really a no brainer. I do not see how anyone could be selected for this award over Beard and/or Caldwell. No doubt, as I have indicated in the Fab 5 thread, Maple is super fabulous. So fabulous is he that I would have a man crush on him if I were prone to such things. Maple is as slick as they come possessing tremendous D-1 talent. Perhaps if the award was for OW of the tournament, Maple would be a candidate, but the award is not. Even if it were OW for the tournament, you would have to consider Caldwell and Beard as they smashed all comers as well. Beard even pinned a very worthy opponent in the finals. That is another issue though and the award is not OW for the tournament. The award is 6A Senior OW of the Year. With that in mind, yes Maple still had a great year and is a worthy candidate, but two things stand out in my mind with regard to the award. I was a head coach for 18 years, 10 years in Kansas. The ten years that I was a head coach in Kansas, I think we all know, at least the coaches should, that the award went to someone not just based on their senior year but their 4 year career. If that is still the case, then the award choice is, as I said, a no brainer and it goes to Beard and/or Caldwell. If you just focus on this year alone, how could you select anyone other than Beard and/or Caldwell. Beard smashed everyone in Kansas by pin or some form of bonus points. Additionally, he won a National Level Tournament in the KC Toshiba. Caldwell also won "Toshiba". Caldwell probably had the toughest competition as he also defeated Nelson and Detmer, two other Fab 5 candidates. As far as I am concerned, Means who has two titles like Maple is just as worthy as Maple. His only loss was at the "Toshiba" and he crushed everyone else other than Crank and that was Crank's only loss. Means would have been a three timer if he had not lost last year by one point to Fab 5 candidate Nelson. Means also has off season wins over Fab 5 candidate Watson. When I consider all of this, you can see why I believe there is no other choice besides Beard and Caldwell. Justice would be served if they were Co-OW. These are my thoughts with no hating intended. Of course you are welcome to disagree but please be non-derogatory.

Good point coach. I would say Caldwell should get it based on all 4 years and especially the quality of wins this year. The problem with Beard is he has been crushing opponents since he was in grade school and I think people have gotten used to it. It's amazing how dominant he is.

Uh... Hasn't the award already been determined? And, none of us know who it is/was or what? This thread is almost as strange as the DELETED (why?) Clay Center vs. Abilene thread.

From the vantage point of a considering a "body of work" during their steller high-school careers, both Beard & Caldwell, make pretty compelling arguments for this award.

Try as I might, I can't advance any plausible argument favoring one over the other. If ... it were up to me, these guys would share the award.

Am I really stupid or are we discussing something that has ALREADY been decided? Aren't these type of things usually decided the night of the tournament? I guess not but I'm not sure.

Maple, Caldwell, Beard... All compelling and worthy Candidates. Award is for 2009 Senior Wrestler of the YEAR... NOT CAREER!

Maple - 41 wins - 0 losses, Over 40 three pt near-falls, 30 two pt near-falls, Over 85 takedowns and again... Nobody finished a match within 8 points of him since state tournament in 2007...

Never gave up a back point, taken down 1 time on a slipped headlock, Never reversed, 25 pins and I believe another dozen or more tech falls.

I like all three and wish it could go to all three... However, I am a Falcon smile

Looking forward to Virginia Beach!!!!
