What are your thoughts on who should get the 3-2-1A Outstanding Wrestler? With all due respect to Devon Frye, Zach Bainter, Marshall McCall, Travis Rempe, Ryan Taylor and Sawyer Krone, I think it comes down to 3 candidates:

119: Dan Weigel, Plainville. Dan capped a stellar 4 year career (4 state medals) by winning the State Championship. He won the what I believed to be the most difficult weight in 3-2-1A.

145: Cas Spangler, Beloit. Spangler also placed all 4 years and is a 2-time State Champ. He had the toughest finals opponent of the 3...Senior Trevor Rempe of Smith Center.

215: Steve Kyler, Ellsworth. Kyler also won State for a 2nd straight year and is the only unbeaten Senior. He had 4 pins in the tournament and defeated a fellow unbeaten wrestler in the finals.

I give the ever-so-slight edge to Spangler after knocking off a wrestler who defeated him twice during the year. Spangler also helped lead Beloit to a runner-up team finish. I don't think you can go wrong with any of my 3 candidates.

I've got to go with Weigel, myself.

Spangler did not place his freshman year he was beaten in the blood round by Weatherhead of Bellville at 119. Here is the link:

What would the criteria be for the most outstanding wrestler? If you are just looking at the body of work built up over the course of 4 years, those are all great candidates. However, if the criteria is strictly based on the 2009 state tournament, wouldnt Dylan Schumacher be in the mix somewhere as well?

My vote would go to Spangler or Kyler anyway as I thought they were very impressive over the course of this season and the state tournament. They both appear to be great young men as well.

The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital.

I wouldn't exclude Zach Bainter from the top 3. He won a weight that included an undefeated wrester in Oliver from Osborne, and beat the kid that I think most people thought was a clear favorite to win in Zahorsky. Not to mention an impressive victory in the finals.

There are several good candidates. But as most of you know, the Sr. Wrestlers of the year in each of the 4 classifications are chosen by a vote of the Head Coaches of each school. Also a coach must be a member of the KWCA in order to vote.
The voting for all classes and all awards presented by the KWCA will be announced in a press release on Mon. March 9th.

should be a very close vote. bainter might of had the toughest route to the title. spangler never fails to impress, might be the most exciting kid to watch. weigel won a tough weight class. kyler was absolutely dominant. any coaches want to let the public know who they voted for?
