Okay so I am new to this wrestling stuff. My 8 year old begged me to start this year so here we are. We have 2 practices under our belt and he is loving it. So here is my questions.....where do i go as a parent to learn? I mean i don't understand how the points and stuff work or anything. what kind of advice do you have for a new parent so that I can be as supportive as possible while my son is on his jorney of learning?

Learn to work tables at tournaments! Start as a time keeper, then a score flipper, the learn to keep bout sheets!
Go to watch HS matches!
That will really help him get the bug even more.
I also like flowrestling.com!
Maybe someone in your club as DVDs you can borrow.
The fact that he likes it & that you are supportive is over half of the battle!
Good luck to you!

Here is some good information...USAW also has a document called "Parents Guide to Youth Wrestling" that has a lot of good info in it. However, I can't find a link at the moment. Good Luck!

The Parents Guide is a great resource. I downloaded it 2 years ago. It has great information. I don't have a link, but I just printed it again to take to practice and give to some of our newest parents.

Also, talk to the coaches, most are parents, some learned as you are now, some wrestled themselves.

If your club allows parents to watch practice... Sit back and listen and watch as the coaches coach the kids... I learned more by watching our coaches coach and by working tables at tourns...

U can always get your back ground check and learn with your kid. How else better to learn than to get out there and do it with your kids.

Have your son explain to you what he is learning after each practice. This reinforces his retention for the next practice, helps you learn and helps him develop good mat sense so his head won't start swimming when he gets into one of those wild and wooly matches where things are happening fast and he has to think fast on his feet.

Good luck, remember if you leave the room better than when you arrived it was a good practice.
