Am I dreaming, or did I hear that as a part of Topeka's bid to win the hosting rights, that room rates were to remain the same? We paid $80 last year, and it has gone up to $94 for this year.

All the rates went up. We have stayed at the Ramada for last few years and the rate was 75. This year the rate is 89 and with taxes and all 2 nites comes to a total of 202. and the rates for next year go up. We stayed there this summer and the rate was 69 and that allowed the coach to stay free. Now when it comes to state wrestling, just like every year, rates go up for the weekend.

Doug,
It's not a dream. We waited until the decision was made on where State would be this year before we signed a contract with the hotel we stay at. They wanted me to sign a contract at the $84 rate before I left their hotel last year; I chose to wait before I made that decision. I talked with them immediately after the state location was made and our price went from $84 to $99. After 2 months of some lengthy e-mails and phone discussions and 3 sale reps later we settled on $85.

Once again, they wasted no time at all on taking advantage of those traveling to Topeka!!

The email that I received from the Holiday Inn Express was that the hotels agreed 3 years ago to a 3 year contract (for $80 per night, didn't go up) and that they are now offering a new 3 year contract that won't go up, for $94 per night. I was under the impression that we chose Topeka because the hotels said we would not see a rate increase. Surely they are not playing politics and saying "we won't raise rates" but really mean "we won't raise rates after this year, for 3 years"??!!

Nedly, is this enough info for you? The gal we've dealt with there has always been very nice, Mindy Stock, but she is getting her marching orders from above I am sure.

Try staying at the Hotel Girard, just twenty-five miles down beautiful I70 in cozy Lawrence Kansas. For just $39.95/night stay, you get the following amenities:

1) Lighted cul-de-sac parking (limited to the first ten arrivals), otherwise, neighborhood street parking (not lit);

2) Living room and basement sleeping areas that can accommodate up to fifty people comfortably, seventy-five people less comfortably (bring your own air mattress);

3) Zoo like atmosphere for the little ones (40-gallon fish tank loaded with all sorts of fish, two cockatiels that bite, four morning doves, two parakeets that bite, one chinchilla that bites, and one black lab that just lays there). For those with bird allergies, get here early to reserve a living room sleeping area;

4) Live entertainment - watch my wife yell at me for doing something stupid, watch my wife yell at our kids for doing something stupid, watch my wife yell for no reason at all;

5) Recreation available - basketball goal in cul-de-sac (no parking under the basket) and fully enclosed trampoline in the back yard (watch for the dog feces when going to and from the trampoline);

6) Gourmet breakfast - there is an IHOP less that a mile from the house;

7) Jacuzzi Hot Tub on premise - not for public use, but it is on premise.

I doubt any hotel in Topeka can give you as much bang for your buck!

Disclaimer: All reservations are non-refundable and subject to my son making it to State.

Looking forward to seeing you all in March.

Good to see that you aren't the only one whose wife won't cook.....

You laugh, but you might be onto something there. Gotta scratch and claw for everything in today's world. I just think if your wife would cook breakfast, you'd get some takers.

The Moses are more then welcome to stay with the Cavanaughs, we'll make sure Cole gets a good nights rest & is fed well.And this generous offer has nothing to do with Cole whooping Alex 2x last year & being in his weight this year. wink

When I asked for a 3 year contract at the $85 rate I was told no.

And I quote “I can’t guarantee this price for 3 years as who knows two years from now what the economy would be like. I don’t believe any other industry would do that as well for that length of time as it would not be considered good revenue management and as a business man, you can appreciate that.”

This leads me to believe they intend on raising my rates next year. I have always loved going to Topeka, but after a while one tends to get tired of the bad after taste of being taken advantage of.

LOL! Alot of things change in a year. We have yet to find the Cole from last year. I have left that job up to Doug and Dal but they need to hurry, time is running out.. I am thinking it is girls, but I didn't think that would be a problem until High School.

We got rooms for $89 at two places locked in at the Comfort Inn and Ramada... Must pay for two nights no matter (which is normal) at both places... and the Ramada states must be paid in full with one form of payment by the Wed before state... Comfort Inn dropped in prices from last year...

Sounds like it was a wonderful idea to go back to Topeka for another 3 years. And before i hear the we had no choice as the bid was cheaper. From what I was told was the company that manages the arenas runs both Top. and Wichita and told the Wichita mgt. not to underbid Topeka. I don't know if this is true or just rumor.

Well you're just a special kind of stupid aren't you?

The hotels committed to fixed prices for the next three years. Here are the hotels that are participating in providing financial grants to USAW-Kansas Kids and their rental rates:
> Capitol Plaza - $99
> EconoLodge - $60-85 based on type of room
> Hampton Inn - $90 in 2010, $95-105 for the next two years
> Holiday Inn - $79
> Ramada Hotel- $89
> Super 8 at Forbes - $69.99 single, $79.99 double
> Sleep Inn & Suites - $109
> Baymont Inn & Suites - $79 for 2010, minimal increase thereafter
> Days Inn - $89
> Holiday Inn Express - $94
> ClubHouse Inn - $79 first two years, $85 third year

Found this from an earlier post this last year. Thought it might be helpful. This was posted when the decision was made to go to Topkea.

how much will it cost to park my tenement on wheels, right on the expo center lot? i mean we gotta be there two weeks in a row, i might just become a resident of topeka for two weeks. i never been in that big ol' capital before, i wanna see my tax $ at work. do they have some kinda free tour, or lunch buffet for ks citizens. i'll tow my smoker behind, and we can tailgate. have the cold beer prices gone up too, or is there is three year contract with the liquor store owners? there's always plenty of roadkill on 75 we can pick up along the way. dont' knock downhome cookin' til' ya' tried it. the kids can swim/ shower in the capital plaza fountains. that revolving door and glass elevator are as good as any amusement park, and you can't beat a cardboard box and the hill to sled on. hell it will be alot cheaper than Disney. this is gonna be great, thanks in advance TOPEKA for all your hospilality.

2pts Lee that was priceless. I laughed by arse off..

second. I have to lock my rates routinely in my business for 3 or even 5 years. You figure what your mid year cost should be and lock in at that.

bottom line. They have their new contract and are taking advantage of it.
