Just completed a 1980 to 2009/2010 spreadsheet of the Kansas State Champions in the eight (8) field sports: FB, VB, Boys BB, Girls BB, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Base B, and SB. Baseball and soft ball numbers are through 2008/09 school year---2010 season to be completed in May 2010.

My eyes are crossed and I wore out two pencils and three erasers. I think the numbers are 95-98 percent correct. 195 different 6A-1A schools won state championships in the eight field sports. Note: did not include 8-man football.

Listed below are the 11 schools with the highest number of state championships (1980-2009/10).

1 Bishop Miege 39
2 Aquinas 32
3 Silver Lake 31
4 Lawrence HS 27
5 Topeka Hayden 22
6 Bishop Colgan 21
7 Topeka Washburn 19
8 Olathe East 16
9 Bishop Carroll 16
10 Wichita Collegiate 14
11 Centralia 14

The next highest five schools (13 state championships each) are 6A SMNW, 4A Concordia, 3A Conway Springs, 3A St Marys and 2A Moundridge. The 432A schools do not play boys or girls soccer.

If I had included Cross Country, Shawnee Mission NW would lead all schools with 39 state championships (26 boys and girls CC plus 13 in field sports).

Of interest is the Lawrence HS record: all 9 FB and all 10 VB championships were won prior to 1996--The year I think Lawrence Free State HS opened. Since 1996, Lawrence HS has won 1 Girls BB and 3 baseball championships.

what if you went from 1960 or 1950 up? That would have to be Lawrence High. No wrestling Championships but a whole mess of Basketball, girls basketball, gymnastics, mens gymnastics, both woman and man swimming, and FOOTBALL.

Yep!!! Have to remember that Lawrence HS was the biggest high school in Kansas- Twice as large as the next biggest by the mid 90s.

I will loan you my stubby pencils and nubbin erasers if you want to extend the spread sheet.

I don't know where you came up with the 14 for TMP. I believe the titles are;

Football- 0
Volleyball- 0
Boys Basketball- 2
Girls Basketball- 1 2010
Softball- 2
Baseball- 1 There are 2 others, 1967 and 1974.
Soccer- 0 for both boys and girls.

Total of 6.

Contrarian,

Why didn't you include track & FIELD? Isn' it more of a field sport than basketball or volleyball which are both played on a court indoors?

Liberal has something like 25 track championships (girls and guys combined).

The thing about staticstics is...you can get them to say anything you want. Add wrestling and Ark City become the 6th or 7th rank.

OK. The spreadsheet covers 1980 to 2009/10. The Lawrence sports dynasty ended in 1995. Not much has has happened since!

True about statistics. Liars figure and figures lie.

If you add the Ark city wrestling championships to the 5 Ark City championships in field sports they would move way up the list. But, the sports I included were just the field sports. Plus, If I had included other sports (CC, T & F, Gymnastics, swimming, etc) several schools would have piled on their numbers and doubt that Ark City would have made the top ten,.

The KSHSAA History for Track and field only goes back to 2000. Liberal won 9 T & F championships in that 10 year period.

Liberal sports history in the sports I looked at shows only 5 state championship in those "field sports".

If I had included other sports I think the relatively listing and ranking would basically be unchanged. The same schools who won in the sports I looked at, also won multiple championships in the sports not included in the spread sheet.

Your are correct. TMP has won 4 championships since 1980.

I had the sporst and numbers correct. I could not make a Spreadsheet formula work and had to do all the addition by hand. Screwed up the TMP line.

Chalk it up to the 5% error.

Sorry.

Perhaps I should state my use of the term Field Sports. Those sports played in an area (field, ice rink, gym floor, etc), with 2 or more players per team on the field, and the sport is played within the concept of "SPACE". SPACE: defenders defend space (man to man, marking, cover, area, zone, positioning, etc), offensive players run into space (FB runners and pass recievers (football blockers block to create/open space), basketball, baseball, FB, soccer, volleyball, softball players pass, kick, spike, or hit into space with a ball, puck, shuttle, etc.). Examples of major field sports within my definition: football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball softball, ice hockey, field hockey, rugby, la crosse, etc.

They just went out and beat everyone instead of whining about the private schools. Whiners = losers! However I do know that they lost two soccer and one football state finals against private schools and I believe KMC was the state champ in track a few of the years they were runner ups.. It cracks me up how a perrennial loser like DeSoto would decide to author a proposal to penalize privately funded schools when they are inept in basically every sport.

Losers find excuses, winners find solutions.

FYI...In 1972 Liberal lost to Bishop Miege in the state final football game 2-0.

True, not much has happened since then. Lawrence High split up into Free State and Lawrence High. If it was still how it use to be though, that dynasty would remain. I remember thinking about that in High School. That would of been an Awesome Line-Up my JR. Yr. Me, Kellerman, Seibert, Hardy, Sommers, Halpin, C.J Williams came out of no where and got a medal as well. ANYWAYS, that dynasty is long gone. No all we have for now is Baseball, if i'm not mistaken. That and wrestling wasn't that bad this year. 2 state finalists, and one was a champ. Up and coming.

Cokely.

Ok. GOt your point. Liberal was good in track over the years. But, I did not include track in my spreadsheet, nor wrestling, nor several other sports. Only looked at what I define as "Field Sports.

Most of the "other sports were dominated by one or two teams, or by a class or area: SMNW in girls and boys CC, evidently Liberal in track, Swimming by the Johnson County HSs, and gymnastics by 6A HSs.

You are still dismissing history. Some time back you asked for a 30 year history. Here it is, but only in the eight sports I defined as "field sports". I think my spreadsheet as constructed is useable as an indicator. Don't see how you can dispute that six of the top ten winninngest schools are private. Additionally, three of the top 10 are 6A schools who do not have to play private schools in state level competition.

If you want to take the spreadsheet back to the start of history and include all sports, send me a PM with your email address and I will reply back with the spreadsheet as an attachment---it is in MS Works and not XLS. Will mail you my 2 stubby pencils and 3 nubby erasers.

Everyone should be hats off to Silver lake--hell of a history in multiple sports: 6 FB, 5 VB, 4 Girls BB, 7 Baseball, 9 SB--31 state championships.

You still can't touch 106 state championships, no matter how you want to skew your numbers!

Didn't skew anything. Established a 30 year time frame and spreadsheeted the facts for that period. If you go very far back past 1980 lots of todays schools did not exist--especially the big schools. Lawrence FS in 1995, how many BV schools existed prior to 1980--perhaps only Blue Valley Stillwell. How many SM, how many Olathe, how many private HS built in the last 30 years. How many high schools have gone either up or down in clasification, what sports, especially girls, have been added in the last 30 years.

As I just replied to Cokely, I think my spreadsheet has utility as an indicator. And, if you want to extend it, send me a PM with your email address I will reply with the spreadsheet as an attachment.

My point was that ANY school, privately or publicly funded, can dominate a sport.

I still think it is entirely stupid to use STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS WON as the basis for an arguement that something needs to be changed. The New York Yankees have won 27 of 105 World Series. That is almost 26% but they are only 3.3% of the league. Oh my God! Throw the Yankees out of baseball or tell them that they can only play with half of their players. Whatever they are doing it must be unfair!
