I'm just curious and would like to get your thoughts on the possibility of ever seeing another Kansas 4 year unbeaten wrestler. Obviously, with just 2 in our state's history laying claim to undefeated for 4 years, it's very difficult to do.

I think unbeaten for 4 is even tougher now than in the days of Maynes and Roberson (although these two were among the NATION'S best). Tournaments like Garden City, Newton and the Bobcat have brought in incredibly talented out-of-state teams. 3-2-1A and 4A schools have stepped up their level of competition by attending some of these tournaments, so it's harder to go unbeaten in those classes.

The best freshman wrestler I have seen in quite some time is Isaac Dulgarian from Aquinas. And even he has a loss. Thoughts?

Outside of Chance Marstellar I don't think there should be one. If you haven't been beaten then you are not seeking competition. You can bump up two weight classes, you can wrestle a senior when you are a freshman, I think every wrestler should challenge themselves while seeking to win every match not avoid one they are unsure of.

I don't think we will because of the number of matches.

Will,
Are you saying that if a guy at 132 is undefeated as a junior then he should go up to 145 just so he can "challenge" himself? That doesn't make sense to me. An undefeated wrestler doesn't mean they are avoiding tough matches.

Yea, I am saying that, by rule, you can bump up two weight classes. If you have a bunch of fish at 132 then why night bump up if there is a worthy opponent. The FILA Jr weights and Olympic weights are very spread out these days. Approx 145, next class up 163. Learn how to adapt to wrestling a bigger opponent. Many seniors don't cut weight so there is a chance that even though you are seperated by two weight classes your true walking around weight might be very close. Challenge yourself!

would you bump a kid at 132 to 145 even though your 145 is a good wrestler?

Plus they'd break certification and have to stay at 138 for the state series. Keep in mind that is if the hypothetical wrestler had certified at 132 already.

You don't break certification if you make the weight. You can wrestle up weight classes. As long as you make 1/2 of your weigh ins at the lower weight you can weigh, in this case, 138 and wrestle 145 without breaking certification.

Appears I have been outwitted on matters of weight certification. Maybe I should stick the race track.

Nah, I'd rather stick around here and pester y'all.

Ok...what if a wrestler "doesn't" bump up 2 weight classes? Still any 4 year unbeatens?

I thinking moving the lowest class up to 106 and eliminating one from the middle it has made it much tougher. Could happen but I don't think it will in the next few years.

So it's true, Joe Dirt is indeed out there as J. Dale predicted.

I think Roberson and Maynes could still go undefeated today. Roberson before Maynes.

Roberson is definitely one of the best if not the best to come out of Kansas.

I also agree that I think Roberson and Maynes could still go undefeated today, but I put Maynes ahead of Roberson for the fact that no one ever took Maynes down.

Both are great!

With the right schedule you could have several undefeated careers, on NONE. It all depends on competition that a wrestler faces. I would venture to say that their would not be an undefeated wrestler if everyone had the schedule Ark City has.
