As a coach you should have a schedule as tough as your team can handle. Every year we always tell our kids that no one is going to go undefeated and if they do then they have accomplished something! You should also have this mind set in kids, so take your little studs to the toughest tournaments where they might and in most cases experience a loss or multiple losses. As Will said challenge your kids. The Roberson's and Maynes' in this world are rare, very rare. Are they the best? Debatable, everyone has their own opinion. But back to the question; will anyone ever go undefeated again? Not anytime soon, too many good wrestlers and more parity! JMO

Roberson wrestled a pretty tough schedule...I wrestled both Maynes and Roberson since I was 6. I would rather wrestle Maynes than Roberson. Zach in H.S. had a speed like no other.

Tough is purely subjective. I definately think these two were tough, how could they not be to go through High School undefeated. They were wrestling in the Northern part of the State though. wink

Lets see . . . wasn't Roberson a D-1 National Champion?

That is pretty impressive to say the least.

Never said he wasn't impressive. I also said he had to be tough to go through 4 years in High School Undefeated. My point was that the competition that a wrestler has put before him helps or hurts his chances of being undefeated. I know for a fact that Roberson sought tough competition, he went after Dusty Spalding their Sr. Year and it was a great match in the Newton Finals. I do not think that all 4 years of his High School Career his team attended tournaments where he could be pushed. No fault of his and he was a great wrestler(probably still is).

Bo was never taken down. I do not care what part of the state you wrestled in. He had 4 5a state tournys that he was never taken down in. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN! Im pretty sure your beloved Ark City was at those 4 5a tournys.

I cant wait till the day Ark City drops to 4a

oh boy........baker vs. beeson III........... another war of words.

Lucas you picked a tough year for the whole 4a vs 5a thing- two of the top 4a teams this year were 5a last year

beeson is right, the kids don't really get to chose what tourneys they wrestle

you can learn alot when you lose, you can become better because of it. we all know that.........only maynes and roberson know the pressure of being undefeated.

Nope not going to do it this year. I will discuss topics that are worth discussing but I am through trying to reason with Luke.

I think very few people on this site would disagree that the 5A State Tournament, or 6A,4A,321A, are not the toughest tournaments of the year. On a whole, Newton, Derby, Bobcat, Garden City, and Perry OK are tougher tournaments. Just for the fact that they combine the classes. And, Yes you are correct, my beloved Ark City was at all four of those State Tournaments, bringing home the Team State Championship at all Four. wink

Today yes those are the best tournys of the year. 14, 15, 16 years ago, Beloit was the tuffest in the state. Teams like Manhattan 6a, Abilene 4a, Hoxie 3a, Clay Center 4a. Salina 5a you really have no idea what you are talking about do you? We had a very good high school wrestler that went on to be a state champ and a college all american come off the mat after wrestling Bo and say did you guys see that I got an escape and he did not let me go. My dad got to coach Bo a few years in the cadet program, He said you could show Bo a new move three mins before a match and he would go out and hit it like he had practiced it 1000 times.

Cant wait to see how many 5a kids make it to state with 0 wins this year. NO way in #3!( does Ark City win 12 in a row in 4a....

Not to mention he is the most laid back guy you will ever meet. Not cocky or big headed at all. Like other that we not even as close to being as good as him but thought they were.

I am not sure why at this point, but this was a little entertaining last year. This year, the entertainment value is zero. This year, not last year, not twenty plus years ago, there are wrestlers in all classes that are battling to make it to the end of the season let alone to finish in the top six in State at their respective weight classes and school classifications. Illness and injury are part of wrestling. We all know it, we don't want to face it, and we sure as heck don't want to see the wrestlers face it. Please, if you want to continue to squabble about stuff that happened in the past, PM the person that you want to squabble with.

Perry and Derby are not even in the discussion. The OK teams at Perry are WAY down from years past. Toughest tournament this year in Kansas is the Bobcat. The KC Classic (or whatever they call it) was tougher but it was in Missouri. GC and Ark C both attended this event but neither of these teams, even the beloved, placed any wrestler in the top 6. Ark C placed 26th. Garden City and Newton are close but Garden has more total teams so I would lean towards that tournament being second toughest. Toughest one day, Gardner.

The age old debate of which state tournament is tougher, in the finals 5A and 6A can get into the debate but below that it is very spotty. It is easier, just a fact, to qualify for state in 5A and 6A. If you are there anything can happen. You have to make weight twice and wrestle four matches to win a 4A or 321A regional which is tougher, no debate. Consistently there are more byes in 5A and 6A regionals than there are 4A (take away the automatic 4 since there are only 60 teams with programs, beyond me why KSHSAA doesn't take the next 64 WITH WRESTLING for 4A) so, in general, it is easier to make it to state in 5A or 6A. Who knows who is the best team in KS. We will never know because we don't have a dual state and if we did we would water it down by having four different classifications so this discussion would never go away. All in all it is fun to speculate and gives more exposure. Good luck to all these next two weeks. Half of they 5A and 6A wrestlers will be in Wichita the last weekend in February less than 1/2 from 4A will be in Salina and less than half from 321A will be in Hays. On the 25th four wrestlers from each weight class, whether we agree that the changes made to the classes were good or bad, will be called state champs. Good luck to all who seek to be one of those 56 wrestlers!

WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!! We are all from Kansas so lets get behind Kansas Wrestlers no matter where they are from or what freakin tournaments they went to. Would I of liked my boys to go to a bigger school and better tournaments, you bet. But I live where I live and didnt want to move so they wrestled at small Central Burden. I am still very proud of what they have done in podunk Central and so are they. Good Luck to all wrestlers this weekend and next.
