Attention Wrestlers and Coaches:

I am proposing to host a HS Grand State Tournament in March of 2013. I need feedback from HS Coaches and HS Wrestlers to confirm interest in this tournament. I am not asking for ideas about the tournament!! Below will be the details of the tournament. I just simply need to know how many of our HS wrestlers would be interested in participating in this tournament which will include the best of the best HS wrestlers in our great state.

Kansas Grand State Tournament
Salina Bi-Centenniel Center
Saturday, March 2nd & Sunday, March 3rd
14 HS weight classes
Tournament will be open to all HS 9-12 wrestlers
Brackets will be limited to 32 wrestlers
16 wrestlers will be seeded by criteria (one of which will be their finish at their HS state tournament)
Therefore, seeded wrestlers will be placed on the bracket on the round of 16. The other wrestlers will wrestle single-elimination matches to reach that part of the bracket.

Weigh-ins
One weigh-in on Saturday morning (5 lb. growth allowance)
No other weigh-in for Sunday.

Saturday, March 2nd
Will wrestle on 4 or 6 mats.
Will wrestle through Championship Quarterfinals and Consolation Quarterfinals. 8 wrestlers will remain after day one.

Sunday, March 3rd
Championship Semi-finals
Consolation matches
Grand State Finals at approx. 5:00 pm

Due to the fact that we will be wrestling after the HS season but during the school year, we have to abide by the following KSHSAA rules.

* HS uniforms can not be worn
* HS coaches can not coach wreslters on their team (except for seniors)
* Schools can not transport wrestlers to the event
* Tournament must be an Open Tournament

Entry Fee will be $20
Entry Fee will cover wrestler and one coach per wrestler

Team scores will be kept for each HS team
A seperate team score will be kept for each HS classification

Medals or Trophies will be given the the top 8 wrestlers in each weight class. (All-Americans or All-Kansans)

College coaches from across the nation will be personally invited and encouraged to come to this event.

We will also attempt to have this event televised

Currently, the time and place for this event is set up.
This event will take place this season if I get enough interest from wrestlers across the state. A decison to move forward on this tournament needs to be made real soon.

I NEED COMMITMENTS from wrestlers that they will come to this event.

HS Coaches and HS Wrestlers: Please contact me by the end of next week whether or not you would attend this event.

I would be willing to organize an Emporia contingency there to work a table. What else, besides needing wrestlers, would you need. This could be really cool!

We are not coming unless you have the 4A announcer there who refers to us as Coby and mispronounces all of our wrestlers' names. It is a tradition! grin grin

This sounds like a great idea. The main thing I see is that there is a good chance you will be taking many of High School wrestlers out of 2 of the biggest kids tournaments in the state with Park City and Hays tournaments being that weekend as well.

I do not like the idea that I can not continue to coach my athletes, there is not a surplus of coaches out in this area, and the kids coaches are busy with their own programs.

I would suggest not limiting the entries to 32. Make this an invitational or qulifier. The only way to go is to place in the top 4 at State. This would make 16 man brackets.

This is a KSHSAA restriction. I believe HS coaches CAN coach their seniors.

It looks like some thought has gone into this and I think that it is a great idea. I just have one question, is the Western Sizzlin still open? If so, I don't think I would have any problem convincing my son to attend.

Wrestlers & Coaches

Let me know if you would come.
I am compiling names to see if their is enough interest.
The tournament will only be a success if we have enough interest AND if those that commit do in fact come to the tournament. Please think about it and make a good decision. Thanks.

I think it would be GREAT to help our kids to prepare for this tournament as well.

Weigh-ins
One weigh-in on Saturday morning (5 lb. growth allowance)
No other weigh-in for Sunday.

Will participants be required to wrestle at the weight they wrestled at the state tournament? With a 5lb. allowance I could see some jumping around.

Open means open. I think seed criteria would be baised on the weight wrestled @ state. Movement in weight would only hurt a wrestler in seedings?

I'm thinking a 126 pounder who could lose 1 pound and wreslte 120 might not care that much about seeding.
