Significant efforts have been made to establish an NCAA Division 1 wrestling program at Wichita State University, and we are at the point where we need to demonstrate support from the wrestling community, both vocally and financially. While we have several fine collegiate programs available in the state, the lack of a Division 1 school is stark when you consider the numbers of wrestlers within our state graduating from high school each year. Unfortunately, many of our better wrestlers have had to leave the state, some permanently, in order to continue with the sport they love at the highest collegiate level.

Seeing support within the community is important, but the decision by WSU may come down to a financial decision. We are not asking for funds at this point, but would ask that anyone willing to help out with this effort to send an email to me (mikejuby@usawks.com) or Will Cokeley (Willcokeley@gmail.com) with the amount that you can pledge towards the effort to add an intercollegiate wrestling program at WSU. With all of the community colleges in Kansas offering wrestling - that becomes a college battle tested ground for the 4 year schools in the state to recruit from.

What are the numbers at Barclay College? They area a Kansas School that everyone forgets about yet should be one of the easiest areas to attract a new program! In fact they have men and women's basketball, men's soccer and women's volleyball Cross Country and Track also are offered. So how about adding women's soccer and men's wrestling?!

Barclay is a NCCAA member school. NCCAA dropped wrestling years ago.

At least 6 schools which have NCCAA membership have wrestling, and compete as an associate member in another organization, for a school that doesn't have a large student body, this could be a saving grace:

Baclay also makes sense geographically as they are approximately 4 hours or less from All Kansas schools with wrestling at the collegiate level (including 5 of those programs being 2 hours or less from Haviland, which makes it marketable for administrators as you could target the idea of not missing classes, distance not being far away and so on). Other places such as Oklahoma City and Kearney, NE are also right in that 4 hour range, meaning with the geographical location they could change things up often.

I thought this topic was about WSU going D.1, not some private school that is NCCAA that obviously is just trying to function now without even trying to move to another associate membership. And which obviously they aren't even in the conversation and/or thoughts when it comes to qualifications to be or go D.1 (the topic here) and/or D.2 for that matter. How about an answer to jeffm's question, what kind of dollar amount are they (WSU) talking about and I would like to add, what other women's sport needs to be added and the cost needed to cover that? This is on topic and should be provided on this public forum.

Somewhere in this range below $380,000 - $675,000 for an annual budget/commitment by the state just for wrestling. Then add another women's sport with the same commitment. Or add men and women's wrestling at the same time sharing some of the facility and equipment costs. From the D-I athletic directors I talked to it takes about a $40-$50 million endowment in most cases to add a sport.

I see and have heard of these numbers which by what was just given a $300,000 difference budget wise from bottom to top, loose figures which include D.2. Plus I'm absolutely sure those figures given include all coaches wages and I don't see several D.1's listed. From the meeting I heard of with WSU that took place not too long ago, what are their (WSU) figures they are looking at, not an average. And, what other women's sport are they looking at adding and why. In my opinion, adding women's wrestling at a new D.1 program is extremely business risky. And does WSU want this endowed before they start the program? How much is the NWCA supporting this dollar wise? Raising money for this means getting all the information out.

Any more current budgets? UNO hasn't had a wrestling team in a few years.

I am sure you can get more recent budget numbers but the numbers above should be a good guide in what it will take to field a competitive team annually.
