Could we please get an announcer that can read? Or one that has some clue about Kansas wrestling? Every year he butchers the final ceremony.

I agree totally about the announcing at Hays. I attended 4-1A Girls State in Salina before going to Hays for 321A and they did an outstanding job as usual in letting you know who was wrestling and interesting matchups going on during the rounds. At Hays they wouldn’t even announce the wrestlers during the early rounds either day which made it hard to follow. The one thing they did have was an overhead scoreboard where they did post the upcoming matches whereas Salina projected them on a hard to see screen. The crowds in Hays were great and I heard the same about Salina. I think everyone was glad to be back in person watching young men and women giving their best on the mats. Next year hopefully the Hays group can improve on their announcing and promoting the individual matches during the tournament. Oh, and possibly speaking into the mike with a little more vocal force, it’s hard to hear a soft voice over a noisy crowd. Congrats to all the Champs and young men and women who helped make this a great wrestling season.

From what I have been hearing, I will be somewhat surprised if there is a state tourney in Salina or Hays next year. I think we will have all of the state tourneys under one roof for both boys and girls in a 3-day event in Park City. . .

While i have no dog in the discussion, i think as a 82 year old fan, it is terrible that at Salina, they do not allow the team to bring food in. After weigh in's, they had to go to the parking lot to eat some warm food in 20 degree weather. If the Tony's Pizza Center needs the extra money by getting it from the wrestlers, i think it's time to change locations and put into any contract with new location allowing the team to bring in at least a hot breakfast. My rant!

Higher ups at FHSU said it would be back in Hays next year.

I believe it will be back there as well. There is no venue in the state capable of handling all classes or even 3 classes.

There is a proposal to do 10 mats at Intrust (I have never been there so I have no idea if it will hold 10 mats) over 3 days with split sessions. I have not seen the exact schedule, but I was told that they have one worked out starting on Thursday morning. It would be 6 tournaments under one roof, but the only time all 6 would be there at once would be the finals.

I do not believe this is a done deal, but I heard enough chatter about it this weekend to think it is a possibility.

The problem is not number of mats necessarily. It's parking! Most of the parking downtown is corporate owned and in use by businesses during the workweek. There would need to be massive shuttle transportation of even teams to and from parking located up to 1-2 miles away. The company that runs Intrust Arena knows this and I don't believe they will offer a competitive bid. They also run the arena in Topeka and I believe is the reason Topeka keeps under bidding Wichita for kids state.

Try finding parking at Intrust and sitting in those tiny seats. I love Hays, they let you bring in tables to set up crockpots, coolers and air mattresses. To me, they are the top spot when it comes to convenience for the wrestlers. You can wrestle in their wrestling room on Thursday to cut a little weight. You can leave your hotel and be at GMC in 10 minutes or less and park next to the entrance. Plus there are enough places to eat and not wait a long time. I’ll take all of that, plus their big screen with wrestlers name, school, weight, match # and mat#. I don’t really need to hear the guy on the loudspeaker, because the big screen can be seen by everyone at any angle. The only drawback about Hays are the constant roundabouts to navigate. I don’t want to go to Wichita, Hays has a great feel for us small schools.

I have heard parking is a nightmare there! I did not write the proposal and do not have a vote on the executive board, but I think there is a real strong possibility that this happens.

I don’t like the idea of every class under one roof. I remember when the Kansas Coliseum used to host 4, 5 and 6A at the same time. The floor held 9 mats, 3 for each class. Friday nights you were luck to be out of the place by 10:30 pm then head to find food and your bed and be up the next day to start at 9 am to start another long day. I think the ones that complain the most about not all being in one spot are the college coaches that are recruiting that weekend, and also KSHSAA who has to reserve 3 arenas, thinking they will save money by cramming everyone into one. I like to go and camp out to watch two days of wrestling. Putting all classes and both Boys and Girls in the same place in three days just sounds insane. As I said earlier I attended the Girls event in Salina the motored out to Hays to watch the Boys tourney. I enjoy camping out in a spot and watching all the rounds, which if they put all in one spot might not be able to do with split sessions. I do enjoy Hays because it is easy to get around, the crowds are always great and they do make the teams and officials feel at home with their hospitality. As someone mentioned earlier Tony’s Event Center treats the teams, officials and Event Staff like they are doing them a favor by letting them use the place. I know they won’t let any outside food in for wrestlers and give the Event Staff a 12 dollar voucher for the day to purchase concession stand food and drinks. That adds up to about a hamburger and a drink. Kinda sad.
