Wrestling is a strange mistress. Sometimes she treats you right, some time she chews you up, spits you out, then stomps all over your nards with combat boots.

So post it up, boys and girls: most heartbreaking match you've ever witnessed for your team or for the opposing wrestler/opposing team.

To name a few:

Trent Van Eaton of Stockton losing the 1993 321A 171 State Final in overtime 8-6 to (I Believe?) Matt Martin of Eudora

Jeff Dannenberg of Osborne losing the 1997 321A 130 State Final in overtime 4-2 to Scott Jenkins of St. Francis.

Brandon Pfeifer of Ellis losing the 1998 321A 160 Final in overtime 9-7 to Tyler Grandclair of Hoisington.

All three were fabulous wrestlers, each a senior, and no state titles to show for it.

And you will know my name is the lord, when I lay my vengance upon thee.

This doesn't do with heartbreaking, more like chair breaking.

Manhattan-Free State dual at Ottawa where the big heavies went through and demolished a steel chair.

-Seeing neil erissmen (desoto) losing in overtime in the state finals to luedke(cant remember) at 145lbs last yr. it was erissmen's first loss of the yr too.

-Watching kevin gray (topeka high) lose in the semi-finals of state on a fake injury default by shawn dedrick at 112lbs. Gray was up by like 10 pts and ran a half and dedrick claimed it injured his neck, so gray was DQed. Then in the consolation bracket he lost in double overtime to corey wright to place. he definitely got a big ol kick in the junk at state his senior yr.

Not really a major match, but one that taught me a good lesson. I was leading Damon Thompson of Silver Lake 12-9 in the 152 lbs. finals of the St. Mary's Tournament in 1997. There were 6 seconds left and I hadn't been warned once for stalling. We went out of bounds and came back to the middle. All I had to do was run laps for 6 seconds to secure the win and the championship. Thompson just ran at me and hit a wild (but dead-on) headlock, taking me to my back, and giving up 2 for the takedown and 2 nearfall. Getting tossed like that brought me the (short-lived) nickname "Giraffe-neck" from my teammates. Never got tossed like that again, though.

This one is probably not remembered by many but in the state semi's 1991 (I think) 130lbs. from Augusta was winning the match by 6(?) points after the second period, was pinning a Spring Hill wrestler and figure foured his head. The SH wrestler started screaming and the match was stopped. Sh wrestler was "injured" Augusta's figure four had slipped to a scissors (while not apparent to onlookers) and he was told by the officials on the mat that it was not his hold that had injured the SH wrestler. They brought out the head official (who was carrying a cup of coffee from the break area and had not seen the match) and the SH wrestler was awarded the victory, Augusta was DQ'd. SH wrestler was later seen turning his head quite quickly and nimbly the next day at the state tournament. I'm not saying he wasn't injured that day, but there wasn't a finals match in the weight class that year.

Two years ago when Tyler McCormick slipped and fell with about eleven seconds left, giving a lucky takedown to then freshman Joseph Cornejo in the semi-finals of state. McCormick was 42-0 I think and had set the single season record for wins. Luckily though he was just a junior and he came back and tore through everyone this year.

How about 1991 when David Seamans of Spring Hill, upset undefeated and defending state champ Josh Gooch from Wellington @ 189. I know as his former teammate we were all disappointed for him. To this day I have not seen a wrestler with Gooch's abilty in the 189 class. What a dream match up it would be to see a Josh Gooch, Justin Dyer match.

I know the feeling that old Boviard had but instead of at St.Mary's...mine was at Regionals with the same situation exactly...got hit though with a headlock to lose the match in the consolation semis and failed to qualify for state.

Another one from the 1991 5A state finals was when Matt Biles of Bonner Springs had Chris Hernandez of Arkansas City on his back 15 seconds into the match and had him there the entire first period...The assistant referee was calling for the pin, but the head ref wouldn't call it...Matt then rolled his ankle in the second period and Hernandez took advantage of it and ended up winning the title...Everyone in the Coliseum knew that Hernandez got his backside whipped and Biles got screwed, but that's the way it went for Arkansas City wrestlers in those days...

The wrestler from Kapaun was Frank Jonas, who also won the State Championship.

I would have to say that the one that made me cry like a little girl was when Hemmerling beat Carrol

So this kid is putting on his shoes right, and his mom says, honey you're putting your shoes on the wrong feet, and the little kid says, no mom these are my feet

As I remember it, Page was one and done, disqualified for smashing through a glass fire extinguisher case after his first match.
