Colby has 50 out for wrestling. 20 out for basketball.
They had a couple of weights with 6 man tryout brackets to make the team. It is a heck of a lot easier to be a varsity basketball player in Colby than it is to be a varsity wreslter.

Simple math will tell us that basketball has 9 less positions available to be a varsity starter. While wrestling is a much better sport and basketball is for skinny kids who aren't physical that often, it's harder to make the starting squad.
I woulda have to disagree with the skinny kids who aren't phisical. I have several friends on the basketball team who without them we wouldn't have a football team, our three top tacklers play on that basketball team.

In high school it is harder to get a jv wrestle a match than it is a jv basketball player. For instance in my highschool many of the players on the bench with the exception of lets say 6-7 played in the jv game and are instance fill ins or are called on as needed. And remember in most cases they also play a "C" team game or freshman game so if you take that into acount 15 starters and lets say 8-10 players who dont start but se adequate playing time due to fatigue. Because basketball seems to me like a 32 minute marathone were wrestling is like a 6 min sprint or in college a 7 min sprint. I can't truthfully tell you which sport is harder as I haven't played basketball since jr high and i'm in college now.

I have done both and I still do. I played a game of basketball this morning and had a full practice of wrestling last night. I can say for sure that I can run up and down the court with jumping and shooting/rebounding at both ends for an hour without substitution. 6 minutes of full contact all out wrestling and I am virtually spent. I would definately be much much more tired. I do not know if that means anything, but that is how it is with me.

I would love to have 40 out for wrestling but unfortunately, Chapman is a basketball town. Has been and always will be. Chapman also has a problem with just getting kids to compete in the sports, especially since most of the kids live 15-20 miles away from the school.

The 15-20 miles away deal shouldn't be a problem as there are such things as athletic busses for those who go out for a sport.

Richard- you don't know anything about Chapman do you? If you did, you would realize that the majority of students who go to school in Chapman do not live closer than 5 miles from Chapman. The city of Chapman has a population of 1,241 (2000 census report) yet has a 4A school.
We have over 100 students attend our school who live in Abilene and Junction City. We have families that live 5 miles from Clay Center but are still in the Chapman school district and attend our school. The Chapman school district covers over 500 square miles and has one of the largest busing system in the state.
There are some kids that go to a Chapman elementary school and later will switch to Abilene due to the fact they live closer to Abilene than Chapman. This was the case with the Wuthnow family. They attended school at Rural Center which is a Chapman elementary school located south of Abilene but since they live only a few miles from Abilene and over 15 miles from Chapman, they chose to go to school there. Our other elementary school district is north of Abilene and we have the same situation. However, the majority of students who attend the elementary schools will continue their education at Chapman.
Yes, we have lost some good wrestlers to Abilene but the reason's are NOT as simple as you imply, they concern family issues that should not be discussed on an open forum.

I can assure you Mr. Salyer, there is nothing wrong with the Chapman school district or is sports programs.

Aaron-I will have to disagree with you. The athletic buses do not run all the time. There are still many hours devoted to driving to and from Chapman due to sports. If you have a large family and live by Elmo (or in my case, you live in Abilene), it can have a huge impact on a family's budget.

Shouldn't this thread be named "Small, but Potent"?

Richard-your information is to prove what? I still say you don't know anything about Chapman. Just because you looked at a few websites does not mean you know anything about a town, it's school or it's administration. I can find a lot of information about China but that doesn't mean I know what it is like to live there.
Please do not make innuendos such as "Perhaps there are other issues in Chapman or athletes would not be attending and competing for a rival high school." without having something other than statistical/trivial details to back it up.
