Here are a couple of suggestions. (I apologize for those who already know this.)

1)Getting to wrestle in the Kansas state tournament is a lot of fun, so enjoy the competition. You only get to wrestle in 1-4 of them in your life so stay completely positive about the experience. It's something you'll never forget.
2)You're in it to win it. No going along for the ride. In sports, anything can happen. Don't lose the match before you step on the mat.
3)More guys lose matches than win matches. What I mean by that is kids panic or stress out and freeze up. They gas early because of nerves. All sorts of crazy stuff happens to wrestlers mentally when they get to the big dance. Stuff that just doesn't happen during the regular season. If you plan for this you can use a few methods to avoid it. And this might help you win some matches that on paper you shouldn't. Maybe even the whole thing.
4)You need a home base and a routine on Friday..it's a long day. Bring lots of clothes because the Colliseum is freezing. Rounds take forever. The countdown to your match may wear you out. Bring a comfortable sleeping bag, pillow, airmattress or something. Find a relatively quiet place in the bldg and think of it as your command tower. Stay away from girlfriends and relatives. From here you will wage your war.
6)Drink lots of water, eat high energy nutricious snacks, take quick 15 minute naps. Go for walks. Step outside and get fresh air. One hour before you wrestle warm up hard. Stetch out. Then 1 lap around the hall, 15 push-ups, 1 min jump rope..do 3 sets of these and you should have a great sweat going. Stretch down. You'll have about 20 mins before they call your match. 7) In the minutes leading up to your match be calm and relaxed. Think about your moves and visualize yourself winning/scoring/dominating. Your coach might have some insight into your opponent but remember this is not about your opponent. This is about you. Go over your ties, set-ups, takedowns, escapes, rides/pins. Think of something you find very funny. Laugh. Go to your mat determined, relaxed, alert, feeling happy and satisfied that you are prepared.
8) Remember scoring comes from flurries. It's what the guy wasn't prepared for that catches him off guard and gives you the scoring opportunity. Be very patient in that you want to stay in position. Don't shoot from far away. No forcing things. Relax and stay loose. Work to get into flurries. Hustle. Show the ref and your opponent that you're there to win this match. Wear the other guy down with your persistance and that comes from enjoying what you're doing.
9) Never panic. If you fall behind keep wrestling. Stay within yourself. Be fundamental. Trust that if you keep the action up the points will come. You don't throw all of your stuff at the guy unless you're losing in the last minute...last minute not final 15 secs...don't wait too long. If the guy wants to play the edge, shuffle back to the center and wait for him there.
10) If you get a lead, wrestle like it's tied. If your tied wrestle like you're behind. Force nothing but keep the pressure up and keep attacking.

Be Eligible. If you are on weekly eligibility, don't forget to take that math or english test if you have a D.

Shelstin - that should probably be moved to #1! You can't win if you can't compete. Get the job done first in the classroom - otherwise all that work you do in wrestling practice is useless.

A great post deserving of the front page today, of all days.

Bump up and read and learn.

Didn't tell you earlier Gutwrench but when you put up a good post, they are great and this was one of them.

Big emphasis on the clothes! It's extremely hard to warm up in the coliseum without a couple layers of clothes on!

#11 - Any opportunity you have to take a #2 outside of the Coliseum take advantage of it.

I know some guys that will go to Sonic and get a rootbeer flurry and then wonder why they can't score in a match. Bravo on #2, it's easier said then done, but Neil Erisman comes to mind as a person that has been upset nearly every year.

Best advice:
1. Show up to Wichita no less than 4 pounds over
2. Do squat-thrusts in a hot hotel bathroom all night so you can make weight. Then barely make weight on Friday morning.
3. Put on a show of crappy wrestling (but just good enough to win) all day Friday because you are afraid to eat/drink anything due to Friday night weigh-ins.
4. Weigh in Friday night.
5. Immediately begin eating and drinking. Do not stop until you weigh 21 pounds more than your opponent, or until 6:00 pm on Saturday (whichever comes last).
6. Win state, do endless interviews, make out with tons of totally hot chicks.
7. Continue eating.
8. Get on the forum 8 years later and impart your knowledge to the masses.
9. Never stop eating.
10. Become a pathetic has-been.

You obviously didn't follow the most important step (#6).

I think it was because I didn't do enough of step #5 which led to me not reaching step #6.
