Newman U Schedule Announcement! 2007-08 Wrestling Schedule 10/3/2007 "The Newman University Wrestling team released its schedule for the 2007-08 season," fourth year Wrestling coach Mark Stovall announced. The Newman Jets will begin the season with the annual Labette Takedown Tournament in Parsons, Kan. on Nov. 3rd. Prior to the LCC Takedown Tournament, however, the Jets will compete in the Red and Blue Varsity Wrestle-Offs at home on October 26 at 7 p.m. The Jets will offer a $5 clinic for all wrestlers from the ages of 5-12 45 minutes before the action begins. The team will start dual competition when the Jets host the Beavers from Pratt Community College at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8th. Next Saturday, the grapplers will head to Mitchell, South Dakota for the Dakota Wesleyan University Open. On Nov. 18, the squad will travel to Golden, Colo. for the Colorado School of Mines Duals. The very next day, the Jets will travel north to Greeley, Colo. for the Northern, Colorado Open. The Thanksgiving break will prove to be a competitive holiday weekend when the Newman University squad travels to Norman, Okla. for the always tough Oklahoma Open. The Jets will face opponents from perennial power house Oklahoma State and other Division I teams. In December, Stovall’s team will wrestle in two tournaments. One of which is the Fort Hays State University Open in Hays, Kan. on the 1st. The following Saturday, the Jets will host the Newman Open. The Jets will bring in the year of 2008 with a home dual against the Colorado School of Mines. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. The dual action will continue that weekend when the team travels down to Dallas, Texas for the Lone Star Duals. Dual action doesn’t stop there. The team will then travel to the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NWCA) National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Jan. 12 and 13. Coach Stovall’s team is in a transition period, as the school recently moved up from NAIA to NCAA Division II. Because of the probationary period, the Jets will compete against teams in the NCWA at the prestigious National Duals. “There is nothing ‘club’ about teams like GrandValleyState and Central Florida,” said Coach Stovall. “I have a lot of respect for teams in the NCWA, but I am confident that this year’s team will have a very successful year.” The Jets host two more home duals against foes Fort Hays State University (FHSU)and Central Missouri State University. The FHSU dual will begin at 7 p.m. on January 25. The last home action will start at 7 p.m. on February 13 against the CMSU Mules. The Jets will close out the dual season when they travel down to Oklahoma City for the Oklahoma City University (OCU) quadrangular. The Jets will face the likes of OCU, Missouri Baptist, and McKendree University. The post-season competition begins with the NCWA Conference Tournament at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. on March 1. The season closes when the team travels to Lakeland, Florida for the NCWA National Tournament. The host is Central Florida, and competition will be on March 13 - 14.

Good Luck Jets!
With Chenowith, Johnson, Wall, Hagan and Fox, this will be a fun team to watch this year. Eight Texans on the roster too.

I couldn't find the results for this in the paper, and I couldn't make it because of a math conference. I checked the Eagle online, but couldn't find it either. Could someone post the results?

http://www.kansas.com/sports/colleges/story/220797.html Newman wrestlers raise bar In their last season before NCAA Division II, the Jets face a tougher schedule. BY MATT BROWNING Wichita Eagle Correspondent One year is all that remains for the Newman wrestling team in its provisional stage between NAIA and NCAA Division II. Since the Jets aren't affiliated with either, they compete in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association, a club wrestling-type organization that brings in Division I, II, III and junior college schools to its tournaments. Newman will focus on continued growth and development in the NCWA before moving to NCAA II. If last year is any indication, it's only going to get better for the Jets. "The expectations are continuing to get higher and the kids know it," said coach Mark Stovall, in his fourth season with the Jets. "We were so close to having six or seven All-Americans last season. We've been training to get over that hump." Instead of the six or seven NCWA All-Americans, Newman had two. Junior Issac Wall finished third at the NCWA national tournament in the 133-pound class, while Clay Goodloe took eighth in the 141-pound class. Both are back this season. Along with Wall and Goodloe, 2006 national champion Curtis Chenoweth also returns. "With all the guys we have back, we should rack up a ton of points," Goodloe said. "The NCWA is really difficult, but I don't see why we can't win in it." What's more encouraging is there are only two seniors on the roster. So when next season rolls in, Newman should need little personnel adjustment. "Our program won't change much -- we're still going to get better," Stovall said. "We might have to change recruiting a little bit, but we still want the best kids in the Midwest." The move to NCAA Division II won't alter the Jets' scheduling. "We're called an 'independent' since none of the other Heartland Conference schools have wrestling," Stovall said. "Teams around the area see how we've climbed the ladder, so they want to schedule us. This is by far the best schedule we've had." Newman begins its challenging regular season Thursday with a home dual with Pratt Community College. More tests are to come with dates against Fort Hays State, Colorado School of Mines and Central Missouri. This time next year, the Division II label will be in front of the program. "It's going to be tough," Goodloe said. "But Division II doesn't stand out in bold letters and scare us."

Chenoweth - Men's Player of the Week Lindsay Schneider - 11/7/2007
Curtis Chenoweth of Wrestling has been named Men's Player of the Week for Oct. 29 - Nov. 4.
After sitting out a year to recover from neck surgery, Chenoweth wasted no time showing how he won the NAIA National Championship for Newman University in 2006 as a true freshman. Chenoweth did not have an offensive point scored against him this past weekend at the Labette tournament in Parsons, Kan. He finished the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record. Chenoweth was one of four Newman wrestlers to reach the finals, but was the only one to capture an individual championship for the Jets.

I apologize if this question has already been answered. In this provisional stage year between NAIA and NCAA D-II competition how does it effect the wrestler's competition status? Do they lose a year of eligibility or is it considered the same as a redshirt year?

Looks like they have it messed up, but I know Isaac don't go to school there. At least he didn't the other night when I spoke to him. Nice to know though, you posted it like they stated it, I guess that says something about OU.

Easy on the OU comment... ; > I didn't have the typo, even Richard just recorded what they had. I just can't figure out why OU would be looking for a way for one of their wrestlers to get beat by an OSU wrestler by way of Kansas Newman

Isaac attended a couple of camps at OU. Isaac decided that he like the program and would like to see if they would even extend a walk-on invitation to him. An assistant, who is no longer there, watched him the rest of camp and told him they would keep an eye on him during his senior campaign. After all was said and done, it was determined that Isaac wasn't good enough on his feet to be DI material. In the end, perhaps he was good enough. I wonder if any of those thoughts entered his mind as motivation as he was beginning to warm up for his finals match? Excellent job Isaac!

Wall Rolls Through Another Tournament Mark Stovall - 11/26/2007
Isaac Wall proved why he is an All-American this past weekend at the annual Oklahoma University Open. Wall defeated NCAA Divison I opponent Joey Fio of Oklahoma University. The high scoring match ended at 15-12. Wall was the only Jet to place at the tournament, but several of the wrestlers won some big matches.

Johnston - Men's Player of the Week Lindsay Schneider - 11/26/2007
Jake Johnston of Newman Jets Wrestling has been named Men's Player of the Week for Nov. 12 - 18.
Johnston finished of a very busy weekend of wrestling with a very respectable 7-3 record with 1 pin. Two of Johnston’s loses came from nationally ranked NCAA II wrestlers and was one round away from finishing in the medal round at the NCAA Div. I Northern Colorado Open. Johnston’s performance this weekend moved him up to a #2 National ranking in the National Collegiate Wresting Association.

Newman will be hosting CMSU tomorrow night for our final home dual of the season. It'll start at 7:00pm and admission is $3 for students and $5 for adults. The dual will be at the Newman gymnasium which is the big shiny building that can be seen off Kellogg in west Wichita.

Now that the postseason has begun, who is Newman sending to the NCWA regionals. As I understand it, they can have backups wrestle. Will they send everyone? Any injuries preventing some from competing? I haven't seen Kitchen or Oyler in any boxscores recently.

Wrestlers Take 2nd at Nationals
Lindsay Schneider - 3/17/2008
The Newman University Wrestling Team finished its season March 15 with a runner-up finish at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Championships in Lakeland, Fla. The Jets missed the No. 1 spot by only 10 points to returning national champion Grand Valley State University. Nine Newman Jets earned All-American status at the championship tournament.
“The wrestling team performed in an outstanding manner,” said Newman Head Wrestling Coach Mark Stovall. “Every member on the team contributed points by winning matches that enabled us to take the second place finish. I’m very proud of these young men who put in such hard work throughout the season. There’s no better reward as a coach than to see these student-athletes perform at this level and give so much to the team.”
Freshman Josh Fansler from Ponca City, Okla., was the lone champion of the team, claiming the title in the 184 lbs. category by pinning his opponent in his final match. Isaac Wall, Clay Goodloe and Florian Temengil all made it to the championship finals but failed to win their final matches. Wall, a junior from Andover, Kan., fell to the returning national champion at 125 lbs. by a tight score of 6-5. Goodloe, a junior from Plano, Texas, lost 8-6 in overtime in the 149 lb. category championship finals. In the heavyweight category, junior Temengil from Dallas, Texas, also lost in overtime to the returning national champion in his final match-up by a score of 7-5.
Four Jets wrestlers placed 7th at the tournament: John Hagan (125 lbs.) of Wichita; Jayme Hoover (149 lbs.) of Salina, Kan.; Curtis Chenoweth (174 lbs.) of Clearwater, Kan., and Zach Hanford (Heavyweight) of Jenks, Okla. James Fox of Wichita placed 8th after an injury forced him to default to his last opponent of the tournament.
Also qualifying for the tournament, but not earning a spot on the podium were Kyle Oyler (133 lbs.) of Hutchinson, Kan.; Jake Johnston (157 lbs.) of Wichita; Aeron Hill (157 lbs.) of Dallas, Texas; Steven Sprague (165 lbs.) of Tahlequah, Okla., and Nate Alvarez (165 lbs.) of Salina, Kan.
This is the last year the Jets will participate in the NCWA as they make the move to NCAA Division II next year.

Hey, I'm gonna catch all hell for writing this but I'm pretty sure someone needs to. Recently our head coach resigned. As of right now we don't have a practice room but have been promised an area and a small amount of money for construction to actually make it a practice room. As most of you know the Heartland D2 conference does not have wrestling. Also due to not having a practice room our recruiting numbers aren't very high. So at Newman we have big problems. I'm hoping someone in the wrestling community, maybe even better someone that might be interested in the head coaching job could go in ASAP and make some promises to the university that they would recruit real hard or whatever they need to hear so that we have a team next year.
Something I forgot was that we have a new AD and he has also put in his letter of resignation but is still serving til August. We really don't have anyone fighting for us. I know the Athletic Director is having meetings today to discuss our program.
My information is the best to my knowledge.

Newman University Wrestling Undergoes Change in Coaching Staff
Contact: Kelly Snedden Director, Communications Phone: 316-942-4291, ext. 2164 Written by Ken Arnold
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 2, 2008
Ryan Smith Replaces Mark Stovall as Head Coach
Newman University Wrestling Undergoes Change in Coaching Staff Wichita, Kan. – Newman University officials announced today that Head Wrestling Coach Mark Stovall has resigned to take a position with the Heartspring School in Wichita for special needs children. Newman Assistant Wrestling Coach Ryan Smith has been promoted to the head coaching position on a one-year interim basis. The change in coaching leadership is effective immediately.
“Mark has done an excellent job and has built a very successful wrestling program here at Newman, so naturally we are sorry to see him go,” said Newman Director of Athletics Randy Smith. “But, he has decided to pursue another area of interest, and we wish him the best in his new endeavor.”
“This opportunity was offered to me and I think it’s the direction I need to take in my life right now,” Stovall said. “I’m leaving with mixed emotions. I’ve learned a lot about college athletics at Newman University. I want to thank everybody that helped me during the four years I was here. I will miss my athletes with all my heart, and I wish the best to them and all Newman student-athletes.”
Stovall earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Newman in 1997. Following a successful coaching career in Texas, Oklahoma and Wichita, he returned to Newman in 2004 to help launch the university’s wrestling program. During his tenure, 47 wrestlers qualified for national tournaments and 14 gained All-American status. Newman also produced two national champions, Curtis Chenoweth in 2006 and Josh Fansler in 2008, and secured a runner-up finish at this year’s National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Championships.
Randy Smith said Ryan Smith (the two are not related) was offered the top coaching position because of his experience with Newman wrestling and the overall success of the program.
“If you’re happy with the direction of the program you promote from within instead of going outside,” Randy Smith said. “We’re very happy with the program and the condition Mark is leaving it in, and I am impressed with Ryan’s passion for Newman wrestling and his commitment to the program. I think it’s a great opportunity for him and that he’ll do an outstanding job next year.”
Ryan Smith said he opted to accept the position on a one-year interim basis then return to his assistant coach role because he plans to pursue a long-term career in business. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Newman in 2005, and a master’s of business administration (MBA) degree from Newman this spring. He works for C.E. Machine in Wichita as a program manager. Before coming to Newman he wrestled for Labette Community College, from which he graduated in 2003 with associate degrees in accounting and business administration. After one year at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D., he returned to Newman for his final season of collegiate wrestling when the Newman program began. He has worked part-time as assistant wrestling coach at Newman since graduating in 2005.
“We’re going to keep moving in the same direction the program has been going,” he said. “I’ve been with the program since it started, both as a wrestler and as a coach, and I’ve learned a lot from working with Mark. He has a great love for the sport. I look forward to the guys who are returning from last season, and I hope we can fill some empty spots in the next six weeks to build a team that wants to work and be successful.”
Newman University is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division II. Newman is the only private university in the state of Kansas that is a member of the NCAA. Newman teams compete in the Heartland Conference, an NCAA Division II conference founded in 1999 that currently consists of nine schools: six from Texas, and one each from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Newman fields NCAA intercollegiate teams in both men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis, as well as baseball, softball and women’s volleyball. Newman also offers men’s wrestling, which competes as an NCAA independent, and men’s and women’s bowling, which compete in intercollegiate conferences. Full NCAA DII Membership Awarded! Lindsay Schneider - 7/24/2008
Contact: Kelly Snedden Director, Communications Phone: 316-942-4291, ext. 2164
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 24, 2008
Newman University Awarded Full NCAA DII Membership
Wichita, Kan. – Newman University officials announced today that the institution has been removed from its provisional status and will be a full member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. The move is effective Sept. 1, 2008 and will apply to all Newman NCAA intercollegiate competition beginning in the 2008-2009 academic year.
Newman is part of the Heartland Conference, an NCAA Division II conference founded in 1999 that currently consists of nine schools: six from Texas, and one each from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
“This is certainly wonderful news for Newman and a testament to the quality of our athletics program,” said Newman President Noreen M. Carrocci, Ph.D. “I congratulate our athletics administrators and all our coaches, student-athletes, faculty and staff members for achieving this milestone.”
“It’s a major milestone in the history of Newman athletics and it’s a reflection of the dedication and commitment of our institution,” said Newman Director of Athletics Randy Smith. “Campus wide, we should feel proud that after conducting a thorough evaluation of Newman University and our athletic program, the NCAA has voted to elevate us to active Division II membership. I am elated for President Carrocci, the Athletics Department, and other members of the Newman family who have worked so hard to make this happen.”
The announcement was made by NCAA Membership Services Staff Liaison Jess Rigler, following the formal approval by the NCAA Management Council July 22 of a recommendation to award Newman active membership by the NCAA Membership Committee. Newman was one of 12 institutions moved from provisional to active membership status based on a review of annual reports from 20 institutions progressing through the NCAA membership process. Two other universities in the Heartland Conference, Texas A&M International University and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, were also granted active membership.
Smith added that while in most instances the NCAA Membership Committee includes program suggestions or recommendations to new member institutions, Newman received none.
Newman was admitted to the NCAA on a provisional basis on July 11, 2006, with a transition process beginning in the 2006-2007 academic year. The entire transition process takes up to four years and includes orientation and training for faculty, staff, and administrators. Newman completed its process in only two years, and is now eligible for all postseason games and tournaments by the NCAA. For the past two athletic seasons, the Jets have been able to play against other NCAA Division II opponents, but have not been able to participate in any postseason tournaments.
Prior to being accepted into the NCAA, Newman had been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Association (MCAC).
Newman officials said the move to NCAA will offer substantial benefits. The NCAA has stronger eligibility guidelines and promotes greater involvement of faculty in athletics at its member schools. The NCAA also provides Division II training and programming in areas such as compliance, rules education, professional development and student-athlete leadership, which typically translate into graduation rates that are much higher than at other schools. Newman’s NCAA Division II status will also increase the university’s visibility on a regional and national scale. National television networks such as CBS, CSTV, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU currently cover 10 Division II men’s and women’s national championships and playoffs. The NCAA also allows junior varsity programs, which increase opportunities for student-athletes and scholarships to attract quality participants.
“It’s a great day for Newman University,” said Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Potter. “When we made the move and knew it was going to be several years before we could participate in postseason play, it was a little difficult to swallow. When you’re recruiting and have to tell students there’s no postseason that’s a big factor. But at the same time I knew it was best for Newman University in the long run. This legitimizes our program and everything we do, and will be good for the university overall.”
Newman is the only private university in the state of Kansas that is a member of the NCAA. The university fields NCAA intercollegiate teams in both men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis, as well as baseball, softball and women’s volleyball. Newman also offers men’s wrestling, which competes as an NCAA independent, and men’s and women’s bowling, which compete in intercollegiate conferences.
