Actually Kit Austin was ahead of Tovar until the last 8 seconds of the match and got thrown for 4 or 5 and ended up losing as a freshman.

From 1930 to 1965 Kansas wrestling only had one state tournament and zero four time state champions. From 1966 to 1970 there were two state tournaments and still zero four time state champions. In 1971 and 1972 we went to three state tournament format and Doug Duell won his first of four state tournaments in 1972. Since 1973 there have been four state tournaments. However, the distribution of schools and classifications changed throughout the seventies until 1979 when the present system was adopted.

In the 70's there were only two four timers (and Roy Oesser was actually a five timer if you count Grand State as and additional championship, perhaps his toughest!) In the 80's there were three, the 90's five, and in this decade there have already been twelve!!

Better coaching across the board at the high school level!

12 From 5A and 6A out of 22. Only 3 out 4A. Having only 32 teams in your classification definitely waters it down. Not to say these wrestlers didn't beat all those they had to but that we have too many classifications. I think NY has had two 4X's ever.

Will's point is really shown by Oeser, he won state in 1975, but not Grand State (I assume he went, there is the chance he didn't.) The point isn't we are producing more studs, only making it easier to be considered a stud.

Chad knew where I was going...
Roy was defeated by Bill Boyle in the Grand State Finals in 1975. Boyle was a Senior and Roy was a Sophomore. Boyle was crowned a state champion twice wrestling for Coach Rodrock at Shawnee Mission West. Rodrock gave up coaching and went on to be a successful residential developer in Johnson County.

Only two of the twenty-two went on to achieve NCAA All American status. None have ever made an Olympic team.

Cokeley, I agree Kansas has too many classes these days. I think Kansas should now have 2 classes 6-5A, 4-321A. KSHSAA would never go for it because of the lost revenue, but it is becoming more watered down IMHO. If you had 2 classes, they should be at the same sight and televised.

Not that I really disagree, but how does a reduction in the number of state tournaments affect the quality of Kansas wrestling? Are kids slacking off in the practice room because they only have to win 4A or 5A?

Clearly with less state tournaments, there would be increased competition the last two weeks for some wrestlers, but there would be an elimination of quality mat time for others. The regular season competition would not be affected.

"Watered down" or not, I think Roberson's and Kriegbaum's and Maynes' 4 time state championships (and all the others) have been a positive for Kansas wrestling, and I don't hope to go the next 40 years without any 4 timers.

Windy,

Normally a State Champion in wrestling would be the best ONE at their weight in their state of residence. It is watered down to call four wrestlers from the same weight State Champions. The best wrestlers may never wrestle each other because of the classifications. I would prefer a grand state tournament but it would make things easier to manage if we combined classes and reduced the number of state qualfiers. We are not preparing our youth for their adult future by making it "easier" to achieve a goal. In many cases more than 50% of the 5A and 6A wrestlers qualify for state. If they are only wrestling so they can qualify for state then things are really messed up. The message or lesson our youth need to be getting is that you work hard, prepare correctly, and make sacrifices you have a chance to achieve your goal. If you don't you have to figure out what to change to get there. It is okay for kids to learn what it is like to be disappointed and not get a reward "just for being there". Kids would work harder.

It is not a positive thing for Kansas when we have a four time state champion if they are not competitive with other state's champions.
