What does this do to the brackets and placement matches. The other side is even more messed up with 3 teams with one loss each and two of those going against each other. Any thoughts on who the place Kansas will wrestle for, (assuming 7th and 8th) and an even larger question, who they will wrestle against?

Thanks Randy, the posts crossed, although still trying to figure out the other side.

Good job men finish the day and push PA hard. All the duals on paper looked competitive - a match here or there the guys are competing for a different place. Already proven by posting a win over Minnesota-1 earlier.

Word is Nathan had hurt his elbow in an earlier match, waiting to hear from him on that as I spoke to Chief. I know he hurt it in a freak accident during Greco, was sitting down, had his elbow extended across the back of a chair and another wrestler leaned back hyperextending the elbow. I don't know if it is related to that, a match or what. I really wanted him to go against Shane who is a great wrestler.

I'll try and summarize later, but I had to share a Joe Bach story. Have any of you ever seen a 284.6 kid get 5 pointed? Heading into the last match with a precarious 1 point lead, Kansas needed a win from Joe Bach. If you haven't seen Bach in person, he has not been a stranger to the weight room. After a 6-0 first period, Bach arm drags the kid to get behind him and to the delight of the Kansas crowd, lifts the "34 pounds over an eighth of a ton" wrestler from PA straight up and over to land in danger for a 5 pointer! One for the scrapbook!

This team finished 7th, which is a great accomplishment. Through all of the issues that confronted them off the mat, they came to OKC proud to wear the Kansas singlet and layed their hearts out on the mat! The team of 2008 will be remembered. Thanks for the great time Kansas Juniors!

Nice job guys! I wrote the Daily Oklahoman wanting more coverage, telling them that if this had taken place in Pennsylvania it would have received huge front page sports coverage. I guess Oklahoma is not the wrestling state it portrays itself to be.

They did have three good articles and the TV stations covered the event. Better than the KC Star covers the Cadets.

It would be nice to get KC Metro Sports covering the Kansas and Missouri cadets national teams. Heck they cover leagues for 10 year old baseball, football, softball, basketball, etc., I guess that should be our job to give them enough notice so they can send a reporter. They do a great job covering the Metro Classic High School State and some other wrestling events. We need to notify them now for next year so they can put it on their planner. Heck - even coverage of Brute, Southern Plains, USA Kids State Folkstyle would be good press. Maybe this is something that could come from the State USA wrestling offices, notify the KC sports commission, KC Chamber of Commerce etc.

Daily Oklahoman - Junior Wrestling: Oklahoma Goes out With a Win

Sat July 5, 2008
Junior wrestling: Oklahoma goes out with a win

By Mike Jeffries
Staff Writer
Wrestling for fifth place was not exactly what Oklahoma coach Johnny Cook was hoping for when he prepared his team for the Junior Freestyle Wrestling duals this week.

Oklahoma's Chris Perry, top, wrestles with Missouri's Jon Eblen in their 189-pound match on Friday.
BY MATT STRASEN, THE OKLAHOMAN

"But we'll take it,” Cook said, after his team beat Missouri 42-20 at Oklahoma City University on Friday.

Oklahoma came into the tournament with high hopes of being in the finals match with perennial powerhouse Illinois. But a tough loss to Minnesota on Wednesday, followed by a 29-28 loss to Illinois, cost Oklahoma a run at the title.

"We should have been in that finals match,” Cook said. "But we did some good things. We were the only team to push Illinois, which was a positive.”

Illinois went on to overpower Iowa, 39-23, for the national championship.

But Cook said his team should bounce back quickly from the fifth-place finish. Oklahoma only had three seniors on the team, so the roster should be filled with experience in the coming years.

"I would say in the next four or five years, we are seriously going to look to win a national championship,” Cook said.

In the final match of the tournament, Oklahoma took an early lead over Missouri and never looked back, winning 10-out-of-15 matches.

In the 98-pound division, Oklahoma's Johnathan Mondragon started things off right for his team, pinning Brandon Szube in one minute, 39 seconds.

The next pin for Oklahoma came in the 119-pound class, when Oklahoma's Ladd Rupp of Perry made quick work of Missouri's Cody Tyler, getting the pin in 48 seconds.

Stillwater's Chris Perry, wrestling in the 189-pound class, continued his undefeated streak, pinning Missouri's Jon Eblen in 44 seconds.

"I think everybody stood out to me,” Cook said of his team. "But Chris Perry really did a nice job, he beat everybody he faced.”

Rounding out Oklahoma's Friday winners was Chaz Mattocks of McLoud, who capped the day off with a pin of Andrew Hammond in the 185 285-pound class.

"I come from a really small country town,” Mattocks said. "So this is a huge honor for me to even be here.

"We were so close to getting first or second, but this was still awesome.”

Random thoughts about our Juniors:

98 - Zach Vesta surprised me. I knew the kid was tough in his age division and I also knew that he had a rough time at the Park Hill duals. I anticipated that the Junior team would be too deep of water for him. He had some big wins for the team and Tyler Dryden and Zach combined for 5 victories. It was nice to fill this weight in time.
105 - Jeff Vesta showed himself to be a veteran at the duals. He probably exceeded even his own expectations by going 7-1 in FS. It really was a boost for the team to get ahead in most of the duals and provided a much needed spark.
112 - Nathan Furches is back! I know he wants that 0-1, 0-1 loss to Alan Waters back, but Nathan was very impressive in going 5-1 for Team Kansas. Most of those wins were tech falls and just the pure showmanship of his wrestling style is fun to watch.
119 - Sharky Slyter was close to going 8-0. He was scored on very late by the NJ wrestler in each period and lost a very close third period to Cody Tyler from MO. One of things I like about Sharky is his ability to put a bad period behind him.
125 - Jake Tanenbaum had a very tough weight class. He went 4-4 and came from behind in a great match with CA, won a critical 8-7 period against Georgia, lost a close 2-2 period against Justin Forrest and pinned his PA opponent in 44 seconds.
130 - This was the toughest weight class in my opinion. Trison Graham lost to a who's who of Nate Moore, Chris Villalonga, Josh Kindig and Zach Bintliff. He won 2 matches including a hard fought three period win over Georgia. This weight also had Dylan Ness, Ian Paddock, Riley Adamson and Dardanes from Illinois.
135 - One of our most heralded wrestlers, CJ Napier, went 6-2 in this loaded weight. He lost a heartbreaker in the NJ dual and a three period loss to the Minnesota kid. He beat Josh Dziewa from PA 1-0, 3-0 in the 7th place match.
140 - Aldon Isenberg went 4-2. He pulled out his famous headlock and pinned Trey Bertram from Minnesota who beat Ellis Coleman for Illinois. He also hung tough with highly ranked Jordan Oliver from PA. Kendric Maple also scored for the team by winning straight periods in the CT dual.
145 - Brent Fisher had a great tournament going 6-2. His dramatic pin with 2 seconds remaining was the defining moment in the MN dual. He also pinned the NJ kid in 22 seconds.
152 - Tyler Caldwell went 5-1. His only loss was to Mario Mason from NJ. He had a great 3 period win over Iowa. Chris Watson went 1-1. His match with Cody Compton came down to a 3rd period clinch and after losing a period 0-6 against California, he won the match in the 3rd.
160 - Tyler Koehn went 7-1. I kind of expected him to run the table. In his 7 wins, he surrendered only 6 total points! He lost an extremely close match to highly ranked Scott Winston from NJ. He scored 24 team points.
171 - Grant Hinckley was a late entry to the team and plugged the gap courageously! He scored 9 team points and at 166 pounds he was wrestling studs that had pulled from 190. He had a close fought match with Armato from MO and also avoided an incredibly tough pinning combination from Travis Rutt on MN.
189 - Dereck Heckel and Nate Davis combined for 4 wins at a weight that was left vacant by a LATE bail out by Romero Cotton. Heckel pinned the CT kid in his first FS match in 5 years. He lost a very close match to Caleb Lines from Minnesota 1-0, 0-1 before running into a conditioning wall in the 3rd period. Davis pinned his CA opponent in the 1st period and won a great match against PA, 1-0, 2-1. Great job to both of these warriors for coming to the aid of their State at the last hour!
215 - Kyle Caylor and Howard Johnson combined for 3 wins. Caylor pinned the NJ kid in the 1st period and wrestled a very close match with Glore from MO. Johnson provided some thrills with his strong headlock. Caylor scored 5 team points and Johnson had 4.
285 - We ran the table at HWT. Big Steve Andrus and Mighty Joe Bach combined for an 8-0 record! We will sure miss these two next year! Those of you that know them both, know that they are quality young men with great futures ahead of them. Being an OU grad myself, I can't wait to see Bach in the Crimson and Cream!

What about next year Chief? I would like to see us get the ENTIRE team together for State, Southern Plains Camp, Southern Plains and the weekend prior to the duals. We have some great competitors returning but we MUST get all of the 2009 graduating seniors to participate. Next year we have to have these guys hitting at least half of the spring events and a couple of regionals. Our gut defense has to improve and we have to be able to turn our opponents when we are down late in a match.

98
105 Zach Vesta, Tyler Dryden
112 Jeff Vesta, Taylor Moeder
119 Nathan Furches
125 Sharky Slyter, Daniel DeShazer
130 Ryne Cokeley,
135 CJ Napier, Parker Madl
140 Cody Shavlik
145
152 Chase Nelson, Tyler Caldwell
160 Detmer, Watson
171 Jordan Brown
189 Nate Davis, Devon Keith
215 Caylor
285 Heithaus, Vincent

I know there are lots more guys out there so lets see if we can get the best to challenge each other at state and then prepare for the duals. We could challenge for top spot...
