FHSU Black and Gold Dual Friday November 7th @ 7pm.

BLACK AND GOLD MATCH UPS

125
Tommy Edgmon - Goddard H.S. (Pratt CC) - junior- 3X Kansas state champion and a 2X NJCAA qualifier. Edgmon is a very powerful and quick wrestler who prefers to wrestle on his feet.

Vs.

Dustin Dooley - Concordia H.S. – red-shirt freshman – Undefeated high school state champion his senior year. Competed at 133 this past season for the Tigers as a red-shirt. Dustin is 5’8”, which is tall for his weight class, and allows him to use his length for leverage against shorter opponents. Dustin is very strong from the top position and is always looking for back points

133
Blake Fisher - Andale H.S. - sophomore - 13-14 as a freshman last season. Blake is very skilled on his feet with an unorthodox wrestling style. Expect to see a lot of motion when Blake is on the mat.

Vs.

Travis Kuhn - High Plains Community H.S. – red-shirt freshman - State medalist his senior year in Nebraska. Was 6-8 for the Tigers last season as a true freshman at 141. Travis is a hard worker who stays in very good position. You won’t see many flashy things, but Kuhn is a very strong wrestler.

141
Dylan Loyd - St. Francis H.S. - sophomore - 11-10 for the Tigers last season as a freshman. Loyd has quick shots and good cradles from the top position

Vs.

James Annon - Norton Community H.S. - senior- 24-11 last season and placed 5th at the NCAA DII national tournament to earn All American honors. James is currently ranked #2 in the country. Annon is a “gumby” type wrestler that can bend any which way. Many times he’ll look like he’s in a though spot but almost always comes out on top in scrambles.

149
Casey Hudson - Widefield H.S. - sophomore- 4-11 last season for the Tigers. Casey is a hard worker who is still learning the college wrestling style.

Vs.

Levi Younkin - Oakley H.S. (Colby CC/Wichita State) - senior- NJCAA All American for Colby and was also an NWCA All American for Wichita State. Levi came to FHSU after a year long break from the sport and has already stepped into a leadership roll for the team. Very solid on top and great duck-unders and low level shots.

157
Danny Grater - Clay Center H.S. - junior- 22-12 for the Tigers last season. Grater is a 2X National qualifier for the Tigers and is due for All American honors this season. Grater is currently ranked 7th in the country. Is a powerful wrestler with several devastating moves where opponents find themselves on their back.

Vs.

Sam Thoman - Andale H.S. - freshman - State champion as a senior at 160 lbs. Thoman is an extremely strong wrestler that doesn’t seem to be afraid of strong competition. Doesn’t have any flashy moves but gets the job done.

165
Troy Lussenhop - Loveland H.S. - senior- 7-6 last season after battling a knee injury. Troy is a 2 year starter for the Tigers.. Has several non traditional moves that he uses on top to put opponents on their backs.

Vs.

Kyle Hudgins - Spring Hill H.S. – red-shirt freshman- 7-10 at 174 lbs last season for the Tigers. Kyle is definitely a mat wrestler who has great mat savvy and likes to use several different leg rides from the top position.

174
Cody Gillespie - Amherst H.S. - sophomore - 4-10 last season for the Tigers. Laid out for a year after H.S. and made a come back last season. Cody is about 6’3 so he makes most wrestlers feel very uncomfortable with his length. Hard worker who shows promise in the room every day.

Vs.

Shawn Kuhlman - Oakley H.S. - junior - 8-14 last season for the Tigers at 184 lbs. Making the move down to 174 this season. Arguably the hardest worker on the team. Kuhlman has an amazing gas tank and always looks to push opponents to their breaking point.

184
Tyler Gonzales - Shawnee Heights H.S. – junior - 19-12 for the Tigers last season. Tyler is a 2X National qualifier at 197 lbs. Tyler has dropped to 184 lbs and is ranked 7th in the country to open the season. Very tall wrestler who gives opponents fits with his length and leverage.

Vs.

Aaron Bersheidt - Gardner Edgerton H.S. – red-shirt freshman - 4-10 for the Tigers last season at 165 lbs. Aaron is very tall and lean wrestler who uses length to turn opponents from to their back.

197
Ben Evans - Hutchinson H.S. - red-shirt freshman - 17-8 for the Tigers last season at 197 lbs with several impressive bonus point victories. Ben is very strong and has great mat awareness. Not ranked yet, but don’t be surprised to see his name in the rankings soon.

Vs.

Carl Wilkinson - Duncan H.S. (Pratt CC) - junior - 2X NJCAA national qualifier for Pratt. Carl is a big guy with a lot of heart. Doesn’t have any flashy moves but will give you his all every time on the mat.

Or

Roman Padilla - Chaparral H.S. - freshman- 6th place in the state of Colorado as a Senior at 189 lbs.

EXHIBITIONS

Brent Fisher vs. JT Hudson

Andre Harrison vs. Scott Markey

Blake Malloy vs. Coty Reinhart

MITCHELL MEANS SIGNS WITH TIGER WRESTLING
Fort Hays State University Head Wrestling Coach Chas Thompson has announced the signing of Mitchell Means, from Goddard, Kan., for the 2009-2010 season.

Means is currently a senior at Goddard High School, a school that he has helped to the 6A State Championship in wrestling two of the past three years (2006 & 2008). His projected college weight will be either 141 or 149 pounds.

Means was the state champion in 6A during his sophomore year of 2007, going 38-2 at 140 pounds. Last year, he placed second in the state with a 37-3 record at 135 pounds. Means was also a state placer (4th) as a freshman with a 34-12 mark at 140 pounds.

Means wrestles under his uncle at Goddard High School, and his father and uncle wrestled for Chas Thompson’s father at Labette Community College. He is the first early signing for FHSU for the 2009-2010 season.

Tiger Wrestlers Dominate Newman In Dual Action

Jan. 16, 2009

The Fort Hays State wrestling squad hosted Newman University on Friday, January 16, at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. The Tigers won the dual in dominating fashion, winning nine of the 10 matches. Three of the Tiger wins were by fall.
The dual began with the heavyweights, as Justin Glenn of FHSU took on Josh Fansler of Newman. Each wrestler would score escape points in regulation, which forced overtime. Glenn took the match 3-1 in the extra period with a sudden victory takedown. Glenn is now 4-5 this season.

Tommy Edgmon would build to the FHSU lead at 125 pounds as he stayed unbeaten with a 7-4 decision over Cameron Motter. Edgmon moved to 6-0 on the year, giving the Tigers an early 6-0 advantage in the dual.

Newman’s lone bright spot of the night would be at 133 pounds, with Isaac Wall (now 18-4) winning by fall at 4:28 over Travis Kuhn. Kuhn is now 5-5 on the season. The fall tied the dual at 6-6.

The Tigers would go on to score 37 unanswered points to close out the dual. James Annon started the parade of points with a 13-4 major decision over John Hagan. Annon is ranked #2 in NCAA Division II and moved to 12-5 with the win. The Tigers would get forfeit wins at 149 and 157 pounds. Levi Younkin benefitted from the forfeit at 149, moving to 19-10 on the season, and Danny Grater, ranked #6 in NCAA Division II, moved to 16-6 with the win. The Tigers led by a score of 22-6 after the forfeits.

The falls for FHSU came in three of the last four matches. Troy Lussenhop posted a fall at 2:18 in the 165-pound match over Jayme Hoover. Shawn Kuhlman would win at 174 with a fall at 1:54 over Pete Tapia.

Tyler Gonzales worked hard to earn a 9-7 decision at 184 pounds over Chandler Hart. Ben Evans brought an abrupt end to the dual at 197 pounds with a lightning quick pin of Brandan Ewertt in 29 seconds.

The Tigers moved to 2-0 overall in dual action this season. The Tigers head on the road for their next dual, getting their first test of the year against a ranked team. FHSU is at #5 Central Oklahoma on Thursday, January 22, in Edmond, Okla., at 7:00 p.m.

Tigers Pull Off Enormous Upset Over #5 Ranked Central Oklahoma
Jan. 22, 2009

Fort Hays State wrestling squad took to the road on Thursday evening for a non-conference dual with #5 ranked Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla. The teams locked up in a very exciting dual that came down to the last match, which pitted 184 pounders Tyler Gonzales (FHSU) and Daniel Morrison (UCO). Gonzales scored a takedown in the waning moments of the match to grab a lead and lift the Tigers to a shocking 21-19 dual win. It was the first win ever for Fort Hays State in Edmond.

Fort Hays State bolted out to a quick 6-0 lead with the dual beginning at 197 pounds. FHSU Redshirt-freshman Ben Evans pinned Zach James in 1:05 to give the Tigers the early edge. Evans moved to 14-5 with the win.

Central Oklahoma would come back to win the next three matches. At heavyweight, #1 ranked Dustin Finn of UCO defeated redshirt-freshman Justin Glenn with a 6-2 decision. Glenn moved to 4-6 on the season. The Bronchos took the dual lead 9-6 after #4 ranked Tim Elliott pinned junior Tommy Edgmon in 5:28 at 125 pounds. It was Edgmon’s first loss of the year and is now 6-1 overall. UCO extended the lead to 12-6 at 133 pounds with Scott Berens scoring a 7-0 decision over redshirt-freshman Travis Kuhn. Kuhn is now 5-6 this season.

FHSU senior James Annon, ranked #2 in the nation at 141 pounds, pulled the Tigers back within three with a 4-2 sudden victory in overtime over #3 ranked Colby Robinson. Annon moved to 13-5 on the season. Levi Younkin almost pulled the Tigers even in the dual at 149 pounds, but lost by sudden victory in the second overtime to #6 ranked Luke Elmore by a score of 8-6. Younkin is now 19-11.

At 157 pounds, #4 ranked Danny Grater pulled the Tigers back to within three points of the Bronchos with a 5-2 decision over Kelly Henderson. Grater moved to 17-6 with the win.

Senior Troy Lussenhop would shift the whole momentum of the dual at 165 pounds by pinning #3 ranked Mikey Morgan in the second period in 3:25. Morgan nearly had the fall in the first period, but Lussenhop shocked the arena by putting the Tigers back on top 18-15 with two matches to go. Lussenhop is now 13-6.

Junior Shawn Kuhlman would play a big role in setting up the drama for the final match by avoiding a pin at 174 pounds to #5 ranked Tommy McCarty. McCarty had Kuhlman on his back but could not get the pin. Kuhlman lost by a 15-1 major decision, but UCO was only able to take a 19-18 lead in the dual with the result. It put everything on the final match of the evening. Kuhlman moved to 21-6 on the season.

Junior Tyler Gonzales would be up to the challenge at 184 pounds to deliver the Tigers a huge dual win on the road. In the fading seconds of the third period, he scored a takedown that would lead to his 4-1 win over Daniel Morrison. Gonzales is now 13-9 overall.

Fort Hays State grabbed just its second dual win in history over Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos had won 27 of 28 dual meetings with the Tigers before Thursday evening. The only other win for FHSU over Central Oklahoma came during the 1999-2000 season (Bob Smith’s final season as head coach) by a score of 21-20 in Hays.

The Tigers are now 3-0 in dual action this season. The Tigers are currently unranked, but have received votes for the top 20 poll in each of the last three national ranking releases. The Tigers have two more ranked teams to face this weekend in Warrensburg, Mo., which includes #19 Minnesota State-Moorhead and #10 Wisconsin-Parkside.

FHSU picked up a couple wins over CSU-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands this weekend. The Tigers head out my way to the western slope this weekend to dual Mesa State and Western State. The Western dual should be a good one!

#5 Mountaineers top Fort Hays State

The fifth-ranked Mountaineers went on to win seven duals on Saturday night to earn a 25-9 victory against Fort Hays State.

The Mountaineers went on to hand the Tigers their first conference loss this season. The victory improves the Mountaineers to 11-4 overall (6-0 RMAC), while the Tigers drop to 7-4 overall (4-1 RMAC).

Western jumped out to a 6-0 lead, after seniors Eddie Lopez and No. 4 Marques Bravo claimed decision victories over their FHSU opponents. Lopez won 8-4, while Bravo won 6-1.

No. 2 James Annon scored a 9-3 decision at 141 pounds to trim the Western lead to three (6-3). But Western went on to win five out of the remaining seven duals.

Chris Freije started it off, after earning a fall in the second period (4:01) against Levi Younkin.

Sophomore Kyle Francis upset No. 4 Danny Grater in a 13-7 decision to extend the Mountaineers lead, 15-3.

The Tigers battled back, as Troy Lussenhop took a 10-6 decision at 165 pounds, but No. 6 Larry Wilbanks regained the momentum as he claimed a 5-2 decision over Shawn Kunlman.

Tyler Gonzales earned the last points for the Tigers, after escaping with a 1-0 decision over Nick Ross at 184 pounds.

No. 2 Donovan McMahill took a 9-0 major decision over Ben Evans and No. 8 Charlie Alexander earned a 3-2 decision over Justin Glenn, to seal the victory for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers return to action at home on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. as they host New Mexico Highlands.

125 - Eddie Lopez (WSC) dec. Tommy Edgmon (FHSU), 8-4 3-0
133 - #4 Marques Bravo (WSC) dec. Travis Kuhn (FHSU), 6-1 6-0
141 - #2 James Annon (FHSU) dec. Daren Hockett (WSC), 9-3 6-3
149 - Chris Freije (WSC) def. Levi Younkin (FHSU), Fall (4:01) 12-3
157 - Kyle Francis (WSC) dec. #4 Danny Grater (FHSU), 13-7 15-3
165 - Troy Lussenhop (FHSU) dec. Skye Wells (WSC), 10-6 15-6
174 - #6 Larry Wilbanks (WSC) dec. Shawn Kuhlman (FHSU), 5-2 18-6
184 - Tyler Gonzales (FHSU) dec. Nick Ross (WSC), 1-0 18-9
197 - #2 Donovan McMahill (WSC) major dec. Ben Evans (FHSU), 9-0 22-9
HWT - #8 Charlie Alexander (WSC) dec. Justin Glenn (FHSU), 3-2 25-9

My two cents:

I thought the Tigers looked alright last night. They had a couple flat performances but some of the guys that lost were scrapin' pretty good. Edgemon was a toenail away from knocking off Lopez after getting in deep on a high C in the last 20 seconds or so. Lopez was able to clamp down on a foot and get a stale mate. Edgemon then went for broke and was taken down. I am pretty sure that the final score was 7-4...he may have topped the minute mark with riding time after that last takedown though. Kuhn hung in there with Bravo, Annon looked very good, Younkin was off, Grater was up early and appeared to quit wrestling, Lussenhop had an impressive workhorse performance. The kid he beat just beat #3 May from Kearney pretty handily the night before (like 7-1). Lussenhop has had some big wins lately and could bring home some AA honors for the Tigers if he keeps it up. Kuhlman hung in there and battled with a tough Wilbanks, Gonzales was slowed down by a short/strong opponent but still pulled out the W. Ben Evans wrestled very defensively against a tough opponent, he never turned on any offense. Glenn had his chances with a pretty tough HWT....he was in there.

The score didn't look that close, but the Tigers were in the majority of those matches. It was fun anyway.

The Tigers knocked off #9 Adams State 23-15 last night! Danny Grater had a big win knocking off #2 Noomis Jones and Tyler Gonzales also had a big win knocking off #6 Kyle Sand. The Tigers have two wins over Top 10 teams this year! Great job fellas!

Here is the press release:

#19 Tigers Knock Off #9 Grizzlies In Hays
Feb. 13, 2009

The Fort Hays State wrestling squad hosted Adams State College on Friday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum, in a match-up of two nationally ranked teams. The #19 ranked Tigers won six of the last seven matches in the dual to come from behind and claim a 23-15 dual victory over the #9 ranked Grizzlies.
The dual started at 125 pounds. Arsenia Barksdale of Adams State, ranked #2 in the nation, needed overtime to defeat Tommy Edgmon by a 5-3 decision. He scored a sudden victory takedown to put the Grizzlies up 3-0 in the dual.

At 133 pounds, Adams State extended its lead to 9-0 when Dominic Valencia pinned Travis Kuhn in 2:56 just before the end of the first period.

The 141-pound match pitted two of the top wrestlers in Division II, #1 ranked Raymond Dunning of Adams State and #3 James Annon of FHSU. Dunning ended Annon’s run at a perfect dual record this season, scoring a 7-4 decision to put the Grizzlies up 12-0.

Levi Younkin would be the spark for the Tigers to get back in the dual, as he posted a 10-2 major decision at 149 pounds over Nick Dionisio to make the score 12-4 in Adams State’s favor.

Danny Grater would keep the Tiger momentum going at 157 pounds. Grater, ranked #4 in the nation, edged #2 ranked Noomis Jones with a 3-2 decision, pulling the Tigers to within five points of the Grizzlies.

Troy Lussenhop would vault the Tigers into the lead at 165 pounds with a fall in 5:51 over Omar Gonzalez. The Tigers led 13-12 at that point and kept their foot on the gas by winning the next two matches.

At 174 pounds, Shawn Kuhlman posted an 11-2 major decision over Don Medina and Tyler Gonzales edged #6 ranked Kyle Sand at 184 pounds by a 3-2 decision. The Tigers led 20-12 heading into the final two matches.

Adams State would keep its hopes alive at 197 pounds, with Torben Walters winning by a 5-4 decision. Walters’ riding time was the deciding factor in the match. The Tigers led 20-15 heading into the final match.

Adams State would need a fall in the last match, but Justin Glenn shut the Grizzlies’ hopes down by winning 4-2 over Josh Teeples. Glenn scored a takedown with four seconds remaining to break a 2-2 tie.

The Tigers moved to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the RMAC with the win. The Grizzlies are now 5-3-1 overall and 5-3 in the RMAC. Fort Hays State heads to Warrensburg, Mo., Sunday for the MIAA Dual Championships. FHSU will wrestle Truman, #18 Central Missouri, and #1 Nebraska-Omaha at the event.
