Interesting; besides Kansas there are no teams from Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska,Colorado or Iowa in this tournament.

To name just a few! Something tells me there is a reason it is called Beast Of The EAST.

They could always change the name of the tournament to , “The Beast of The East Plus the One Team From Kansas!”. That may however be a little too much to print on the T-Shirts. Reminds me of last years Metro Classic when there was discussion on this forum about putting a kid from the Wichita metro area in the line up!

Catoosa, Oklahoma actually attends this tournament. I believe they are the only team east of the Mississippi River.

Greg,

You missed one! Catoosa, OKLAHOMA attended this tournament last year and THIS YEAR. They are on the list... Give it a rest Greg. The 500 mile rule to "keep athletes in class" MUST go away. A student athlete will learn far more on one trip to a tournament like this than they will in a week of class! How to navigate an airport, budgeting your funds, meeting wrestlers from other states, what it is like to travel out of state, staying in a hotel/motel, studying ahead of time to make the trip happen, etc. These are WAY more valuable tools than sitting in a classroom each day, every day. The world of academe is so narrow minded. Jeeze!

Catoosa is located on the East side of Oklahoma! If it is an open tournament there should be no reason for not allowing a Kansas team to compete. What is the logic behind the 500 mile restriction?

Using the list of schools as posted; no Catoosa, OK listed.

Hooray for Catoosa.

Greg,

Reread the list. It is right under Campbell County, KY. Buck up and admit you didn't thoroughly read the list. I will get a complete list of teams that have participated who were west of the Mississippi.

The point is FREEDOM TO CHOOSE! Almost no Kansas schools will or would go but the point is WHY should they be prohibited from going? To go to the Beast requires no more lost class time than if we were to attend the Norton, KS tournament. If any team's parents or community want to go the extra mile, raise the funds, they should NOT be prohibited from doing so. KSHSAA has TOO MUCH control and the system for changing rules is BROKEN, actually I don't think it ever worked! The staff members of KSHSAA are overpaid control freaks.

SJA is going to Denver this year. Do you have any idea how excited the team is about it? Just a little more than if we were going to the SMNW Invitational! We can use it as a carrot to keep kids interested in the sport, interested in keeping their grades up, and as a reward for the extra hard work they have been putting in by working out all summer. Look at the positives that can come from this and pull your head out of the sand. The world is a bigger place than Kansas plus 500 miles!

Why is it that when I subtly raise a point you have to be negative and sarcastic?

I think that this is a very tough tournament and would be a great opportunity for many talented student athletes from our state to showcase their talents. On the other hand it makes perfect sense why there are no Kansas teams on the list. For one no public school's athletic budget could afford this trip. Two school is very important and a trip like this calls for a lot of preparation along with missing many days of class (depending on the date of the tournament). Three there are many liability issues and concerns with a trip like this. I see a trip like this being great if it is not during the Kansas High School wrestling season. Your team and wrestlers are working towards winning a state championship in Kansas, so wrestling against your competition in that state during that season is important.

seriously cokeley is right! teams should be allowed to attend whatever tournament that they desire. Thats it bottom line! and being sarcastic about it because either you r on that wonderful board or you r buddy buddy with someone who is then you r no better than KSHSAA. who by the way is as bad as the ncaa and the bcs, but thats another story all together. It doesn't hurt anybody if someone thinks that the r up for the challenge for a tournement like this one or any other tournament. STOP HOLDING KANSAS ATHELETES BACK BOTTOM LINE!!!!!! I was MY self and another wrestler were both able to attend RENO TOC but could not go because KSHSAA said no! what a joke spelling may be off in someplaces i wrote this fast so i don't wanna hear it!!! I would also be glad to speak to any of you in person if you feel you whish to speak to me! Adam Venegas

Adam the answer to your question/statement is clear. DO NOT be a KSHSAA member then you are free to attend whatever tournaments wherever, whenever you wish. It's that simple. No one is making these schools who feel held back be a part of the KSHSAA.

Why should all the other KSHSAA schools change their rules to satisfy 1 or maybe 2 teams in the whole state? The rest of the schools are fine with it. If those 1 or 2 aren't happy I would suggest they look at a different governing body.

Alex,

That is an absurd reaction! Pay for an organization but don't use it because we don't like it. Heck no! You promote change and you debate your position with facts. Less than 10 states in the entire country have travel limits. Why do we have one? I was told because the limit was the equivalent of traveling from one corner of the state to the other. The rule is to keep kids in class. Guess what, air travel opens up all kinds of options that allow you to be in class the same length of time. The rule is ridiculous. It needs to be removed! If only one or two teams will take advantage of the FREEDOM why do the others even care? It is a communistic, control mechanism. UnAmerican. Spend my tax dollars but don't try to fight for what is right. Are you sure you aren't really DONKEY wrestler. You sound an awful lot like a democrat to me!

GM wouldn't change the way they were doing things and look where it got them!

Just an FYI. If you are going to try to promote yourself as an unbiased arbiter for hire I really think you should refrain from taking a position on a public talk forum. Perception is everything...

Wow, Mr. Ryan not a very realistic option! I guess any one who disagrees with any government policy should just move out of the country !! A closed minded attitude like yours will always be a hindrance to progress. None of us are enemies here and giving kids opportunities should be everyones' goal.

Or, we could disagree with the democratic majority and just blow up the whole system as Mr. Cokeley suggests.

Greg,

I have a new name for you. Will's Shadow. When I post my Shadow quickly follows and never agrees.

It is okay to have an opinion when it is a realistic possibility. You and Donkey Wrestler both know that if you aren't a member you cannot wrestle in the state tournament.
