At 160 lbs. the Fifth place match was a double injury default.

Marr from Ark City and Curtis from Gardner both placed Sixth.

WOW!!! They placed all the way to 8th. Technically a wrestler could get beat out of this double elimination tournament TWICE!!!! I hope the "P" club gave out ribbons to everyone that entered the tournament, that would only be fair. When are tournaments, including STATE, going to stop coddling kids. Place the top 4, all other places do not matter.

Not following your thought process here. What is wrong with wrestling as many matches as is possible/practical? This tournament "cost" the same number of participation points whether a kid wrestled two, three or six times during the two days of competition.

Yea, that is pretty much a dumb comment. I am going to call the NCAA up and tell them to take away All-American honors from those 5-8 place kids today....

As a local team, we spent a lot of money to go the TOC. I can't even imagine how much Colby, Clay Center, Mill Valley, Gardner Egerton etc. had to spend to travel to this tournament. With this many teams 8th place is warranted as it does give extra matches to some kids. You might want to check which teams were there this week-end and figure out how tough this tourney really was and how 8th place was not bad at some weights.

Greg, My thought process, back in "the good ole days" it meant something to place at some of these tournaments. I just have a hard time wrapping my head around placing 8. Is everyone looking for QUALITY matches, or watered down QUANTITY matches? What were the medals? 1st Gold, 2nd, Silver, 3rd Bronze, 4th Copper, 5th Lead, 6th Wood, 7th Ribbon, and 8th Paper. Kind of like reverse Anniversaries. grin

Apples to Oranges, NCAA's is Nationwide. There are qualifiers to get into the tournament. So lets not keep track of Dumb comments.

It wasn't any tougher than when they only placed 4.

I would bet if there were an all state tournament that the Champions at this tournament would be in the finals.

Then why have the 4x champions had such an increase since when I was in High School? If that is what you have to tell yourself to justify adding 8th go right ahead. More competitive does not mean better, it just means that they are more evenly matched. I'm not sure that is good.

Flanagin actually won this match and placed third. They entered it wrong on the brackets, but corrected in during the finals.

"Placing" 5-8 has little to do with medals/awards as it does having the opportunity to wrestle another match or two. Quanity vs. quality is, IMO, not really critical to this discussion; the kids are there--might as well be wrestling, don't you think?

I am a little timid about bringing this up because I think someone might take it serious and implement it. Go ahead and place the top 8 for the matches. Let's not stop there though, anyone that loses their first two, should be thrown into a hard luck bracket, and place the top 8 their also. Lots of mat time and 50% of the participants get a medal. I have not figured out how to make the other 50% feel good yet, but I'm working on it.

I think you may be the first person ever on this forum arguing that FEWER matches should be wrestled!

Seems like your concern is giving medals for low placings; in your way of thinking this is rewarding mediocrity. However, IMO awarding/winning medals is NOT the point of wrestling the additional matches. If possible, shouldn't a kid get four (or more) matches over the two days they are there instead of two?

Actually your idea has merit; what is wrong with wrestling the maximum number of matches that are allowed? Kids who are not very good can use all the mat time they can get. Forget the medals.

And, no matter how you structure it, half of the kids will finish the day/week end with a loss.

Wrestling the maximum number of matches allowed is NOT another example of the "pussification" of America.
