Thanks for letting me know, if you could email your name, childs name and what happen with TrackWrestling I would appreceate it. coachjt@cox.net That way I have a record of what happened and we can get it straightened out.

I am old school and got out of wrestling before TrackWrestling started. I am just now getting back into it, I have ran many tournaments in the past so I am helping out, but someone else is doing the TrackWrestling, I don't want to mess it up.

Is this something that can be fixed soon so you won't have to be handing out refunds. I really like to not have the extra go on my credit card, I know it's only $10 but it sure would be nice to have this one fixed before most of the registrations come in.

How about entering on Trackwrestling as far as weight class goes? Do we estimate it, then just show up and weigh in, and you put us in the weight class that we weigh in at? Or is it like the folkstyle state series, if you don't make that weight, you don't wrestle? I have a horrible memory, but I thought you just weighed in, and they bracketed after weighins? Just need to know when we have to declare weight class.

Why is it that kids wrestling only Freestyle cannot weigh-in on Friday Night? It's a long drive to Rose Hill and it would be nice not to have to get there 3 hours before the start time.

So can someone answer my question about whether you will be bracketed after weighins, or if you have to make the weight that you signup for? I have 3 kids that are very close weight wise that want to split, so they all have a shot at the National teams, and don't know who is going where, but want to get them entered.

Thanks
Doug

Doug,

They will be bracketed based on their actual weight at the weigh-in. If they want to compete up one weight class, you should ask the person doing the weigh-in to manually increase their actual weight. This higher number should be entered into TrackWrestling to move them up a weight class (the paper weigh-in sheet should still record their actual weight). You cannot wrestle more than one weight class above your actual weight.

OK, so if you sign up for 152, and show up and weigh 145, you can wrestle 145? Or 152? Thanks
Doug

They should put their best guess on weight. They will be bracketed based on the actual weight, regardless of what weight they entered in TrackWrestling.

1. Nobody in Southeast Kansas volunteered for a Satellite weigh-in.

2. The weigh-in was set by the State; the times were set by Rose Hill. After Freestyle weighs in they can eat then relax a little before competing.

I guess if you live in North Central Kansas you get to spend the money on a hotel room or tell your wrestler that you can't afford to go because of the weigh-ins and where they are. Hope the wife can find a way to squeeze an extra $100+ out of our budget so I don't have to explain why my son can't wrestle at the State Tournament.

There are six weigh-in sites, that is five more than what you get with the Folkstyle State Championships. You live 87 miles from Topeka, there are a lot more people across the state that have to travel a lot farther than you do.

What I'm really trying to say is this is not the right way to get more kids involved in GR/FS. There was a club within half an hour of us that volunteered and wanted to do a Satellite weigh-in and they got turned down. With all the talk on here about ways to improve Kansas wrestling I guess I just expected more.

Yes Folkstyle States does only have one weight-in site. You can also weight-in Saturday morning. Plus it's a two day tournament so you are planning on a hotel anyway but have the option of not getting one Friday night if you can not afford it.

My understanding at the Satelite weigh-ins is they had to be pre-registered. We are not ordering registering & doing new USA cards at Satelite sites. I thought registration ended at 3:00pm Thursday according to trackwrestling site.

The Hutchinson satellite weigh-in will be at Hutchinson High School. It will be in the North Gym - you will need to park on the west side (east side is closed due to construction).

1) Make weight during the weigh in time.
2) Show up at the tournment.
3) Collect medal(s) and go home.

My youngest had this situation last year. We tried to get some exhibition matches but the tournament was too tight to allow time for those. A vote by the board sealed the fate. A majority voted to keep age and weight classes intact. No combining. Personally I would like to see Madison Block wrestling with four or five man round robins.

We wrestled up a weight class last year!! If this is not allowed this year it will hurt numbers at the tournament. Please let every one know before these rumors keep people from coming.

How can you tell who's in your weight class/division this early before deadline?

Although Madison Block format might be ideal it's a little late to alter pre-determined formatted guidelines & information within a State Wrestling Tournament.

Reminder: Towel & blood rag. (Although a t-shirt & paper toweling might "get you by."

If a kid is the only one in his bracket will he have the option to wrestle up a weight class after weigh-ins close or do they have to make that decision at the time they weigh-in.

the answer to your first question is trackwrestling prereg matrix.

As for your second comment--No its not to late. They have two choices
1. have many wrestlers with no matches or one person to wrestle.
2. do block wrestling & have 4-5 matches for almost all wrestlers.

some parents will complain that their kid would have won state if he didnt have to give up weight. But winning state by making weight or beating one kid is not what my sons or myself are wanting out of this tournament. I would assume many others feel the same way. If any one wants a medal PM me & I will bring some.

It is a little early to decide which way to go, have to see what numbers look like sat morning. I just hope they try to get every wrestler the best experience possible.

Thanks Mike...I'm in total agreement with you this is all participation & opportunity for the kids in learning Olympic style wrestling.

The outliers in the weights would make it difficult upon those closer to the median & mean (in some instances 15 lb difference for a SB vs moving one wt up or down in Bantam or Int. to gain some mat time). Ultimately some criterions such as no more than say 15% wt. difference.....this boat seems to always have a rider when it comes to extremes either way.

Ultimately, FS/GR is so much MORE FUN than Folkstyle! Hopefully some kids/parents just come & watch!

luellen,

Personally I agree with you on the block wrestling idea for all the same reasons you posted.

I do not think we can do that because of the Triple Crown award. We don't block the folkstyle and the same thing happens in some weights (not as much because the participation is much greater). It seems to me that we have to keep consistent with the weight classes in order to keep the Triple Crown award consistent and then wrestle exhibition matches for kids that need to get matches.

That is just my thought I may be wrong and would ask the state body folks to comment and give us some guidance.

I get your point. Wrestlers can voluntarily move up a weight. ALL PARENTS & WRESTLERS NEED TO CHECK THE MATRIX ON TRACKWERSTLING PREREG!!! Then make a decision on what weight to wrestle!! If you dont you may end up in a 2 man best 2 out of 3,or even worse not get a match. You can move your weight on track untill 3 pm today. People are still entering & numbers are looking much better than last night. But many will not get a match if something is not done.

The Triple Crown should have no bearing on this decision to block or not. Does it make the award meaningful if a kid walks through a FS/GR bracket?
I would be interested in hearing the executive council's reasoning for not using block weights.

I agree too. need to block it. My son has 4 kids including him, but if you look at the SB division it's pretty bleak. he's a copy of the matrix from 112 on.
112: 3
120: 2
128: 1
136: 1
144: 1
152: 1
160: 1
175: 2
190: 1
210: 0
265: 0

What has been the numbers of participants for the last several years? 256 greco and 322 freestyle is what I saw a few minutes ago. For some reason I thought we had only been getting 225-250 the last few years, but that is only off of memory, and my memory is not good.........

Last year the State tournament had 185 Greco and 210 freestyle
Good point on the triple crown but I don't want to spend the money for a hotel just so my son can wrestle one or two matches against the same kid. If you are making us spend the night make it worth our while.

Yes earlier I did want to keep the weight class pure but there is just not enough kids at alot of the weight classes. Make this a good tournament not a tournament to hand out metal to everyone. Make our wrestlers earn the state title.

Can someone post the link to finding out who is in the tournament. I know Luellen said it was trackwrestling prereq matrix, but I don't know how to get to that.

Thanks

They won't release names until 10:30 tonite. The only thing you can view is the matrix of how many are in each weight class.

Sorry, that I don't have all day to spend entering kids. Was trying to do all at one time and had one on the fence. Started this adventure at 2pm...while working and answering 3 phone lines.

It was a 2 day tournament for years and they went to one day when the participation was low. If it's back up now it needs to go back to 2 days.

great to see #'s up. wrestling until 10:30 a little much. lots of scratches towards the end. really nice venue though. lots of room, too much down time. 2 days would better suit the event. thanks rose hill. plenty of helpful folks. officials also worked a 13 1/2 hr day. happy mothers day moms!

If we want to grow this tournament something has to change...starting at 9:00 a.m. and leaving around 10:30 p.m. doesn't exactly make this something people look forward to...I overheard people saying if they didn't make it to the championship match they were leaving...

Bigger facility with more mat space

Friday night Greco, Saturday freestyle

Splitting groups like smokey recommended

This was the first time I had been in Rose Hill's facility. I thought it was great. 6 full mats were nice, the seating with the seat backs were nice, and the area to watch from above was nice as well.
It just needs to be considered to revert back to a 2 day tournament. Way too long of a day.
There were some times were there were open mats, but all in all it was run pretty well. Just too many matches to fit in to too little time in the day. Smokey's suggestion should warrent some consideration before next year.
Hat's off to the TABLE WORKERS also! At least we were able to take a break. I'm sure their day felt even longer than any of us parents and wrestlers!

Can some one please answer sport0s question. many wrestlers won a state championship without wrestling or 2 man RR. Whats the glory in that?? I think block weights would improve participation.

I would be interested in hearing the executive council's reasoning for not using block weights.

That is one of the downfalls of TW, even for folkstyle tournaments. You never know numbers till it's often too late to do anything about it.

The down time was minimal, there would be an empty mat here and there for 2 or 3 minutes, that was all for the most part. I thought the Rose Hill people did a great job considering. As has been stated, the table workers put in a long day for no pay and overall did a very good job(if they had been stock brokers on Wall Street they would have wanted a large bonus and for a change would have earned it). Part of the problem with the long day was the quality of competition. These were really good kids. There were very few short matches - not many quick pins - and a lot of matches went all 3 rounds. And Sportsfan02 I do not see how track wrestling affected not knowing the numbers - all you got to do is shorten the time to register - but that cuts down participation.

As said, needs to go back to 2 days, but then people complain about having to get hotel rooms, taking off work, or wrestling on Sundays. No system is perfect.

Over all, hats off to all involved - the Rose Hill people did well and the wrestlers who endured.

Agreed, but a cutoff date so close does effect what preparations you can make for increased participants. In FS/GR there is little we can do about it as long as everyone wants to use TW.

Definitely need to consider splitting that tourney into two days or adding a gym and more mats. Can you imagine what time we would have gotten out of there if ALL of the matches had been wrestled? Without all of the forfeits, we would have been there past midnight.

We either go to two gyms, or two days. Going in, I thought we would be there until 6:00, and that shouldn't bother anyone. When I heard our entries were up about 50%, I thought it might turn into a long day, but not 10:30 pm. I don't even know if Rose Hill has another gymnasium, but if we had 4 more mats in another gym, we could definitely get out of there by 6:00pm in a one day format. 9 until 10:30, but really call it 12:30 if we wrestled all of the matches, is 15 1/2 hours on 6 mats. Should get us out in about 9.5 hours on 10 mats, or 6:30 or so. If we can promise this kind of exit time, I think we can keep our numbers up. If we don't do something about it, we can plan on declining numbers, IMO.

Yes they do, and a nice size one. They would have had to borrow mats from the looks of it, but I'm sure several of us neighbors could have helped out in that regard.

First of all thanks to all the the workers for putting in a long day and Congradulation to all the State Champions and Triple Crown winners.

Lets wait and see how many wrestlers came this year and will not be back again next year. Friday only weight-ins for Greco and then 13+ hours for the tournament. State titles being given out without wrestling a match or a 2 man RR.

Luellen I for one, have a wrestler who is more proud of last year's second and third place (out of four) than this years State Title. I would also like to hear the executive council's reasoning for not using block weights as Sportsfan02 asked.

If the numbers stay up we do need to go to two days for the tournament. I think it people know at the begining of the season it's a two day tournament then the complaining about hotel rooms and such would be cut down.

I say one day, but two gyms.....but we'll live with either. Of course that is easy for someone that lives 45 minutes away. I liked the idea of satellite weighins to save the hotel room. I think we should try to keep it one day, just so we don't have the decrease in numbers again like we did a while back.

Every year we review the performance of the state tournament and consider changes for the next year. One change that I believe is almost a certainty is returning to a 2-day format. Among the other changes we will be discussing is the use of block weights instead of USAW national weight classes.

If you have any thoughts on these or other changes, please let me know.

Lots of excellent ideas and solutions. More mats and another gym is the main one. Rose Hill is a great facility and central location.

4 to 6 mats and another gym would cut it down to a 7 or 8 hour tournament. May not even need to be 2 days.

More than extra mats and another gym are needed to pull it off though: they need neighbors to step up with the mats, help to run tables, more refs. . and the biggest thing. . . help with clean-up at the end.

Going to 2 days would sound like a good idea unless you have more than 1 child wrestling on different days. There was another gym at Rose Hill. It was the one the kids were playing wall ball in. Enough room in there for 3 full mats and seating on one side. Do all wrestlers below the age of 10 need a full mat? You could easily get 10-12 surfaces to wrestle on by using both gym's. Just my $.02 here to save $80.00 next year.

I would like to thank all the School Officials, Mat Officials, Pairers, Table Workers, Concession Workers and everyone else that helped us put on this tournament. Except for the length of the tournament I feel things went well. The pauses in wrestling on a few mats at the end of the day was due to us calling wrestlers up and we had to wait a specific time to scratch them. When we would have 3 or 4 in a row then we would get open mats.

I myself have been in wrestling for over 20 years but this was the first time I had ever been to a Freestyle/Greco Tournament. None of my table workers had been to one either, we have ran tournaments before but always folkstyle. The only helpers with our tournament that had seen this style before is the Mat Officials, Pairers and Gonzo. (I was proud of how my workers did being inexperienced)

Rose Hill is a 4A school and we have 5 mats, I do not know too many schools that have more mats than that. I would like to thank Derby for lending us a mat in the last second when another school had promised us one and then backed out. Yes we have two gyms and could have had 3 more mats in there but we were going on estimates from experienced people including the state board members telling us how many kids would be there. I was told that last year 5 mats were used and they would recommend us using 6 this year.

Many of you have said that the numbers were up and we should have used the other gym. How was I supposed to know the numbers would be up that much when registrations don’t end until Friday night at 3:00 pm.? It would be hard to add mats, officials, and table workers over night. The information on the tournament was on the web for a month, yet Monday morning I had 12 people signed up. As of Wednesday evening I had 130 people registered. We were sweating wondering if it was even worth putting this tournament on, much less expanding?

The way things are set up now I don’t see you doing anything else but guessing on how many are going to show up and that makes it hard to prepare a venue to run the tournament perfectly.

Thanks to everyone, the helpers, the wrestlers and parents. I had a good time but I was ready to collapse at the end. LOL

JT,
I don't think anyone is faulting you, the tournament, or the facilities. Like you said, with the late due date for entries it is impossible to know just exactly what you will need in the way of mats or help. Trackwrestling has made all of us tardy on entries and it is a problem even for invitationals. I think one way to possibly cure this is tiered entry fees based on how late you enter your wrestlers. For instance, if someone wants to wait till the last minute to enter their wrestler or team then make them pay an additional five bucks per entry.

I want to say thank you to Rose Hill and everyone that helped. Besides having to drive home that night for 3 hours my son and I had a really good time. I'm all for keeping this a one day event and just adding more mats. I don't agree that Track Wrestling is a problem, after all people set the time that you can register. Just make the cut off for registration two days earlier or even a week earlier.

So for those that are incharge and that will vote on this next year. I am for a one day event. At least Nine Mats, no matter the numbers( Three for Bantum, Intermediate, Novice, Six for Schoolboy and above). Keep the USA wrestling weight classes, and Pay those that host more! (I know you can't do the last one but it's a good idea.)

JT - I think the tournament itself did run very well. I want to thank you and all our help for a great job. Here are some of the things I saw that were very good.

1. The facilities were great. Plenty of seating and viewing areas.

2. The table workers were all professional and did a very good job given the hours they worked. One would have had to watch very closely to notice they had never worked a GR/FS tournament before.

3. The concession stand was open until almost the very end and well stocked all day. The prices weren't terrible bad either.

4. Exect for a few minutes here and there per mat most mat were being used continuously without a lot of down time.

Overall the tournament itself ran very well. Once again thank you and all your help.

I also want to thank the tournament director & workers.

Here is my reason for wanting block wrestling
these numbers are freestyle only (greco numbers are less)

68 weight groups total
15 three man brackets
13 two man brackets
10 1 man brackets-- 10 state champions that did not wrestle a match!
38 brackets out of 68 total 3 man or less

ok lets say a three man bracket is worth driving across ks & spending 13+ hours in a wrestling tournament & a few hundred dollars. I think very few will say a 1 or 2 man bracket is worth the time or effort.

23 brackets are 1 or 2 man thats 33% of the people coming not getting a match or just wrestling the same kid 4 times.

There have been several suggestions that we move to a facility that can hold additional mats or use an auxiliary gym. This would be an ideal time to discuss one of the great needs we have in our state - recruiting new officials.

At this year's tournament we had every active freestyle/Greco official in our state at the tournament. In addition, we had a very fine official from Oklahoma who agreed to come up and help us with our state tournament. There were barely enough officials to handle the six mats that were used - it would not have been possible to open up other mats, even if they had been available.

This has been an item of discussion at our board meetings for the past several years. We've tried several things to increase the numbers of officials, including a long-term plan which provides incentives for Juniors and Cadets who perform some officiating at tournaments in which they are competing (this particular programs gives the athletes a way to help pay for their trip to Fargo while also exposing them to officiating). Fees paid to officials, which used to be next to nothing, has increased to a respectable level (although still less than a typical folkstyle event). However, we still don't seem to be able to grow our pool of officials.

If anyone out there has a love for the sport and would be interested in becoming a freestyle/Greco official, please contact our State Officials' Director Mark Anderson (matman033@yahoo.com or 913-645-8438).

We would attend this tournament if it weren't for the fact we would have to drive 250 miles to get maybe one match in. Looking at the entries, my son would not even of wrestled unless he wrestled up 15 pounds.

Yes we live in western Kansas. Yes we are used to driving to do anything. But...you might get a few more kids to participate if everything was not held in the eastern half of the state. I am not asking for things to be held in western Kansas. I am suggesting that things be held in the center of the state. I thought it was great that MS State was held in Lindsborg.

Just my 2 cents...

Just wanted to say what a great set of facilities Rose Hill has! Also wanted to thank everybody for their hard work to provide this opportunity for our kids. We drove 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours to get there and I would do it twice if they would make it a two day tournament. This was only our third state tournament and it was the best one yet. I do think we should combine some brackets. You could look at several things to combine them, skill level, age and weight. This would take some time and you might have to use paper and pencil, but it is doable.

Again thanks to everybody who put in their time to provide my kids with this opportunity!

We need to walk before we run. I would suggest more mats and wrestling Greco until 10 pm on Friday. We could use Cadets and Juniors to officiate the kids mats and use the experienced officials for the kids.

Modified blcok wrestling for the youth levels is a must! These kids need mat time not a state championship. The age groups below schoolboy should be a "festival" and we should permit out of state kids to participate too. The state championships and triple crown awards should be reserved for schoolboy and above. We need the torunament resluts to matter towards the dual team rosters as well.

Will, Great idea. I would have had no issue with the hotel room if we started wrestling Friday night. This would also keep families from having to spend the money on a second night in a hotel, like a two day tournament. Weather we combine weight classes or make it a "festival" for the younger age groups we do need to get them more time wrestling different kids.

It was nice to see the numbers up so high. As long as we can keep them coming back. I heard numerous comments from 1st families that they were not coming back due to the weigh-in and the length of the tournament. Weigh-in and start wrestling Friday night would make the Hotel worth it and shorten Saturday. That might keep some of those wrestlers coming back.

I think wrestling two rounds of Greco on Friday night should be considered. It would shorten Saturday's ending time and no additional mats or refs would be required.

Actually our dual team is considered by looking at the results from the state tournament and putting the best possible lineup together from those results. There are however some wrestlers due to scheduling conflicts that were not able to make it to the tournament this weekend. This will always be a problem. That is why we have implemented the regional training centers. Before a wrestler is handed a spot on the dual teams they must have been attending the centers. We can use head to head match ups from the state tournament as well as the upcoming Southern Plains tournament to separate or rank wrestlers for the teams.

Coach Hermreck,
That is not the same answer you gave me at state on saturday, you did mention head to head but when I asked if the results mattered you said, "No, not really". I understand why you gave me that answer.I feel that if the roster spots were on the line, like they are in other states, we would have a better turn out and the wrestlers would probably put more effort into being at the weight they would want to wrestle for the duals.

It does matter for those that will be participating in the same weight class. Usually what happens is the wrestlers will be entered in a different weight classes for duals and Fargo. For example, Wrestler A wins the state tournament at 130 pounds in Freestyle. This means that he has a National Dual roster spot for 130 pounds locked up for him. Typically this wrestler chooses to move down to 125 for the duals though. So now we have to take in consideration that he is moving down and now he is trying to take the spot of the state freestyle champion from 125 pounds. Our goal is to put the best team on the mat, period. We use the state tournament results to find the best man at each weight class, however some of our wrestlers were not able to attend this tournament thus we have to create room for them as well. With all the shifting of weights for duals, you can see this is a difficult thing to get done.

I agree that it would be difficult to make room for those that could not attend.

Using your example of the 130 pound wrestler, if he wanted to go 125 for the duals then he should have gone 125 at state, then there wouldn't be the delima of what to do with them. I just feel that if the weight changes were not allowed our state tournament would be more important and would grow.

Because of baseball, track, prom, golf, ACT's, etc it is nearly impossible to make the state tournament THE qualifier for the summer dual teams. We need to have the BEST wrestlers possible at each weight and at the Junior level we need to have wrestlers NOT going both ways unless they are an alternate. The schedule and weigh in requirements make it too brutal to wrestle all 15-20 matches in four days.

Can we move the tournament to June? Heck no! We have tried that and the data clearly shows that May is the way to go. The past four years we have had two in May (300 plus wrestlers) and two in June (80 to 100 less wrestlers).

Should you wrestle the weight at state that you want to wrestle the duals in? Absolultely!

Could we use Southern Plains as a qualifier? For sure but you have to wrestle the weight you want to be on the team at.

What if you are a past Fargo All American? Automatically considered for dual team participation.

Regional training center attendees? If we have six and you make three then you get considered.

So now we have a handful of guys. Winner of state, winner of SP or highest KS placer, regional trainees who didn't compete at state, returning All Americans. If we have multiple guys who want to be on the teams we have wrestle offs at one of the last regional training center events. If you were injured and didn't meet any of the above criteria then you petition the Corp Board who conduct an electronic vote. We get the best guys in the starting line ups, we have the best alternates strategically placed and we use as many guys as possible so that we don't have guys doubling up.

It really shouldn't be that difficult. Heck we have a hard time filling the starting line up! Last year there were next to no alternates so a few wrestlers had to go out every dual.

I do want to grow the state tournament as much or more than anyone but it can't be the end all selection for the dual teams.

Some kids, mine included, are growing like weeds right now. He plans on going 140 or 145 for the duals and SP, but didn't feel like cutting for state, then a month later, doing it again for SP and duals. He'll cut for SP, and maintain so it is easier for Duals. Whether that makes any sense or not, that is his plan. He wrestled ALL 16 matches at Schoolboy duals last year, so after that, he is looking forward to having some alternates to depend on for a break now and then. Or if he is not the first team guy, he can spell the first team guy. These duals are brutal, so we need to take at least 30 guys. Keep in mind, we could have 3 guys make weight at 140 and have them be our 140 and 145 lbs guys, rotating each dual. Same with any weight. I believe you can move up one weight class once the roster is turned in.

doug i understand the wrestling all the matches eric did the same last yr but would it be fair to the kids at 145 if 3 guys at 140 was to take a spot from the 145 pounders or at any weight without doing a wrestle off, also at $250 which is basically the same amout the schoolboys had to pay and not get to keep there singlets like the schoolboys did seems a little high being how they dont get anymore and actually less gear then schoolboys and middle schools dual kids do.

I like the idea of a qualifying tournament to set the dual team roster. In my opinion this is the only way to do it. make the kids wrestle to earn their spot on the team.

I really think there would be very few weights that would be very controversial. I don't think by the time southern plains is over, that there will be many questions about who should be at what weight. And keep in mind, there may be an animal at a weight that might be asked to bump up a weight class to make the overall team stronger.

I think the gear is nice, but when these kids get older it is gonna be the memory of working their tails off and being a part of Team Kansas that they will talk about, not the gear.

State and southern plains to some degree are qualifying tourneys. I guess WHY's tourneys at Andale the next two weekends could be also. Head to head is always going to be a determining factor.
