After the results of Garden City Tournament, IMO there should be a new number one TEAM in the state!

The Thunder took 8 guys and got 6 in the finals. I think that's kinda good.

It will never happen. Just don't bring the ones that wouldn't place and you can say you didn't have a full team. Wrestling is not a game, but lots of them are played in the rankings. I'm sure something about student/athletes being students first or competition points will be used as the excuse.

As important as these rankings are... smile ... I'm not sure that Coach Medina plans his teams tournament rosters to effect the All-Class team rankings.

Where would you rank the importance of classroom studies or complying with KSHSAA rules?

SJA's goal is to win the one tournament that matters most. The Thunder doesn't care what they are ranked as there are no trophies for being ranked and they don't give you bonus points based on rankings. There are lots of legitimate and strategic reasons things happen the way they do. It is over a six hour drive and demands two days of missed class in order to be properly prepared for Garden City. Home mat advantage cannot be overlooked either.

I grow weary of everyone grinding on the Chief about bias. It is really simple... each team gets points based on their individuals potential to place in a hypothetical INDIVIDUAL tournament of ALL Kansas wrestling schools. All five placing matches lost by SJA were to Colorado wrestlers so that dirties up an ALL Kansas comparison right out of the gate. It is simple math that stacks the ALL CLASS team rankings the way they end up. No bias and no special bonus because Chief likes the Thunder. All Chiefs like the Thunder because that is what you want when you do the rain dance. smile

I know the rankings are based on math which many posters struggle with so lets just go straight up, head-to-head in a dual format and speculate a little...

How would they stack up?

106 - Efrain Sanchez (20-10) placed 4th and scored 18.00 team points. vs Jackson Ott SJA We will give GC a bonus point.
GC 4 SJA 0

113 - Michael Prieto (35-2) placed 1st and scored 29.50 team points. vs Steve Tujague SJA It is a decision as it happened.
GC 7 SJA 0

120 - Mark Perez (19-16) placed 11th and scored 11.50 team points. vs Max Goode SJA (Toss Up)
GC 10 SJA 0

126 - Thomas Marquez (5-11) place is unknown and scored 4.00 team points. vs Reese Cokeley
GC 10 SJA 6

132 - Alec Castillo (8-6) placed 4th and scored 15.50 team points. vs Zak Hensley
GC 10 SJA 12

138 - Tevin Briscoe (24-3) placed 1st and scored 26.50 team points. vs Clay Lautt (Mies caught Clay but I am saying Tevin doesn't)
GC 14 SJA 12

145 - Chris Adler (36-6) placed 3rd and scored 22.00 team points.vs Andrew Tujague
GC 14 SJA 15

152 - Jesse Nunez (26-10) placed 5th and scored 16.00 team points. vs Sammy Cokeley Could go either way
GC 17 SJA 15

160 - Zac Finch (6-3) placed 6th and scored 14.00 team points. vs Ben Vanlerberg
GC 17 SJA 21

170 - Matt Marez (19-15) place is unknown and scored 2.00 team points. vs Matt Pratt
GC 17 SJA 27

182 - Tye Hahn (9-9) placed 14th and scored 9.00 team points. vs Trent Salsbury
GC 17 SJA 33

195 - Sam Reyes (32-5) placed 3rd and scored 24.00 team points. vs OPEN
GC 23- SJA33

220 - Luis Castaneda (11-7) placed 6th and scored 15.00 team points. vs David Feist SJA
GC 23-SJA 36

285 - Montana Fuller (5-1) placed 2nd and scored 24.00 team points. vs OPEN

GC 29 SJA 36

Mark should have the "Back in the day Rankings" that are based purely on his "opinion" but I think we should stick with math and not pure subjectivity.

Maybe not forever, but as long as you are rooting for them, they will get a favorable nod.

Lets make sure all rules are being followed and we are not just using them when we need to justify short fallings.

Everyone has to travel, that's just part of it. So that excuse is out the window. Nobody gets to wrestle every match with home mat advantage.

This is not a dual tournament, it will be an individual tournament. Sometimes you can't have everybody make the tournament. Don't penalize those who are prepared and can field a full team. There is nothing saying that every wrestler mentioned will even make it to state, let alone perform like Chief thinks they will.

No matter what happens, what the bias, or what the excuse is, we shall see soon enough what IS.

I'm putting my money on the Thunder this year, but Goddard is going to have a long streak I feel.

Chad,

Let me teach you something. Here is how you actually back up a bias claim.

1. Look at the 5A or AC rankings.
2. Go through each weight and identify which wrestlers are not correctly ranked by criteria.
3. Provide that criteria to me.

If you fail to find criteria to back up a claim of bias, then either post an apology or stop claiming there is a bias. It's really simple. Continued claims without proof hurt your credibility.

By the way, I cheer for Kansas wrestling! You know that my All-Class Dual teams, Junior Renegade teams and the Junior Dual teams have wrestlers from across the state. They are OUR teams!

Chief,

Simple question. How many weeks has St. James or St. Thomas been ranked #1 since their move to 5A? How many state titles do they have? Last year you moved St. James above Ark City for a while... How did that end up. I do not believe that you have an intentional bias, I just think you see more North East wrestlers, and you rank on what you see. Just as Chad would have a tendency to have a South Central bias. The humor is, you and Will think that your opinion is fact. You will pick one sentence from a comment and miss the rest of the discussion. We all just need to remember that these rankings are for entertainment. They don't actually mean anything. By the way.... at 5A 138 you have Kissane ranked 3 and Hoing ranked 6. My info says that Hoing has beat him twice this year. Just FYI. Not saying your wrong just pointing out what I see. My prediction is that Goddard finishes ahead of St. James by 15 points at State. Good luck to all.

I will not post an apology for an obvious bias, The whole state sees it. So let me teach you something. When you root for a particular team. When you are hoping that they do well. When you give them the benefit of the doubt in close calls. That is a BIAS. Nothing wrong with rooting for a team, but realize you are doing it.

Jim Ramirez is a huge BULLDOG Fan, he had the opposite BIAS. Bulldogs had to work harder to get calls that other schools would usually get. If a Bulldog ended up on his back, he better get off quickly, Jim would call the pin to show that he was being fair. Instead of holding them on a pedestal he would hold them to a higher level of preformance. No excuses.

There will be no apology for trying to point out your bias to you. What you do with the information is totally up to you. Either accept it or deny it, either way, others see it.

Weren't you the guy that predicted Goddard to beat SJA at the bobcat too?

I'm pretty sure for most of last season Chief had Ark City ranked number 1 then switched them with Garden City towards the end of the year. Or the other way around I can't remember. I do remember that SJA finished 3rd in the AC rankings last year. I don't think STA has ever been ranked number 1.

1. No I made no Bobcat predictions... Just that Goddard will beat St. James at state.

2. My question was since the move to 5A not just last year and yes St. Thomas was ranked #1 two years ago when Ark City won it.

3. I was talking 5A, Chief had St. James #1 for a couple of weeks near the end of last season.

I am trying to show a pattern over the last few years of St. James and St. Thomas being ranked #1 and other schools winning State. That pattern might just show bias. Maybe??????

2. The move to 5A was just last year for SJA. 2 years ago when Ark City placed 1st STA took 5th. Maybe he had them preseason ranked number 1 in 5A but I really doubt he had them ranked #1 right before state.

3. Thanks for clarifying I thought you meant AC. You're right they were ranked #1 for a week or two but after regionals he switch back to Ark City.

I could be wrong, but that was also the year Zac Hensley did not make weight for state. He would definitely made a difference!

In 2012, Zak's freshman year, he missed weight but SJA was still 4A and I agree he would have made an impact but not enough to put SJA at the top. They qualified 10 that year. 9 wrestled and only placed Reese (1st) and Salsbury (2nd).

Will, thanks for the dual possibilities. I did one last year for STA and STA - and like yours was just an opinion.

here are some facts:

GC and SJA faced the same competition in this tournament(Kansas, CO, NeB) and GC won.

You have stated that Rocky Welton is one of the toughest tournaments in Kansas. And GC won.

I searched through your post here and as expected, there are zero examples of criteria. Let me bring it down to a 3rd grade level. In your next post, name a SJA wrestler that is ranked too high.

Doubt all you want. St. Thomas spent most of the season at #1. Not just preseason. Ark City was ranked behind St. Thomas going into state (This is all two years ago). And the fact that he had St. James ahead of Ark City going into regionals last year, as you say goes to bias. Was it even close last year?
