Spent Friday and Saturday watching the Bobcat classic. Especially interested in the 152 lb. weight class with all the undefeated and almost undefeated wrestlers at this weight. The final was a fingernail biter and nerve stripper. It was a real barnburner with Schroeder pulling the win out in the last few seconds by hanging on by the skin of his teeth. Both wrestlers put on a great match, and I would have to say really gave the crowd their money's worth. I can't quite figure out the criteria for the OW, all week long I heard that the 152 lb. weight class was going to be a total war with so many top winning wrestlers vowing for the title at 152. After the selection was made, I checked back on the 119 lb. class and couldn't find any clear reason for the OW coming out of this weight with several schools having this weight class open and several wrestlers with losing records. As I have seen in the past, the OW is way to controversial and leaves the wrestlers wondering why. As an adult I find it hard for me to understand the voting and reasoning for many for these decisions. It's probably just me, and I suppose many people have just as many reasons for thinking someone else should have won the OW. It just seemed to me with all the pre tournament hype, that 152 lb. weight class was about as tough as I had seen in a while. Never liked OW awards, many times many deserving wrestlers get left out. Congrats to first place St. Thomas, second place Andale, third place Glenwood, and all the others teams for a great tournament.

Just taking a shot in the dark. I am guessing that it has something to with a 3x State Champion (possibly a 4x'er) getting majored in the finals, that is a pretty big statement....

But then again, undefeated wrestlers facing each other all the way through the bracket, then a hard earned decision would also need to be considered, you'd have to look at who they had defeated.....

There will probably never be a time where an OW will not be disagreed with. I think the way ours is chosen is about as fair as it could ever be. The coaches(25), the referees(8)and the tournament directors Gary Ulmer, Randy Westphal, and Troy Hodges select the OW. I would say that these 36 people probably know who deserves the OW award better than anyone. My guess is that it had something to do with Bahe winning the tournament for the third time which I believe has never been done before this year. I will have to look though. For some reason Justin Wiscombe’s name is also coming to mind. Bahe had a great performance this weekend as did many other wrestlers, and if it were all done again next week the OW award might be awarded to someone else. When you think about the years of wrestling knowledge that is possessed by all these people it is pretty astounding. I would say that Ulmer, Hodges and Westphal probably account for about 500 years of wrestling knowledge between them. They are older than dirt! Seriously, I appreciate these guys, because if it were not for them we wouldn’t be able to pull off the tournament. Thanks again Gary, Troy, and Randy for all the work you do at this tournament.

Just a thought on the OW voting. At many tourneys, the announcers call to have the coaches remember to turn in the ballots, sometimes BEFORE some matches are over. I think possibly many coaches turn them in early, and dont watch ALL the matches. This could lead to sometimes the OW going to a lighter wrestler. I was not at Basheor, so I dont know the case there.

Swayz,

I'm still able to access the Bobcat Classic\'s website , but many of the links are currently inactive. The finalists link is active, but the brackets aren't (at least the last time I checked).

Coach Neil, thanks for all your insight into the the history of your tournament and all the knowledge everyone voting for the OW has. But I really don't see where what happened in the past years has so much to do with this years award. The ourstanding wrestler this year has nothing to do with the previous years tournament. I have raised five boys all the way through college and had two wrestle in college, so as you might see I have seen my fair share of matches. You can defend your choice and that is fine, but I still don't agree with you. Thanks for your explanation.

My choice? I don't pick the OW. The coaches, referees, and Tourn. directors choose the OW. I don't know how you can intelligently argue with that system. As for my explanation of the OW, it was just a guess on my part. I didn't ask all of voters why they cast their ballots a certain way.

I'll see if I can get those links working tomorrow. I don't know what went wrong because we were updating them on a regular basis. I'm not a technology person, but I'll see what I can do.

I remember Randy Westphal saying that there were votes for 10 different wrestlers that the coaches selected for Outstanding Wrestler. There were so many good wrestlers at this event, Bahe amongst others was a very deserving candidate, and he wrestled extremely well during the entire tournament.

Thanks Mike and Coach Neil.

As for my vote, maybe I'm a minority in this one, but I think Artist of Glenwood stood out, not sure what all of his scores were, but he was pretty impressive.
