Congrats, Andy! I'll show my ignorance, where is Lindenwood? They'll be lucky to have a great student athlete like you. Your teammates all missed you at Brute last weekend, but we saw you checking up!

I believe it is just outside of St. Louis in St. Charles, MO.

I will add my congratulations, too! Good luck, Andy. I hope you get a team and individual national NAIA championship in your career there.

Congrats Andy, College wrestling is a whole new level that you will enjoy. I am sure that you will not regret the decision to wrestle in college. Just realize that when it is tough, it is worth it to keep on going.

I expect Baker to make an official signing soon. Not sure on the others. I'm wondering about Tait Weatherbee, Jarrett Edison (I'm pretty sure that's down to 2 schools for him), and Chris Sutton-Kearn.

Smull is playin football at Sterling. I heard that Madden isn't wrestling. I kinda doubt that tho. Tait Weatherbee was at the UNK wrestling banquet on a visit. So he could be headed there. Baker made a visit to Pratt so he might be headed there.

Go to http://www.bronchosports.com and look for wallpapers..and voila, there you have it!

I know there are quite a few alumns of UCO that view this site and are excited about this Kansas signing. Heck we have enough UCO wrestling connections in the state that we need to get a Kansas chapter of the UCO Wrestling boosters!!!

I was thinking, "Poor Coach Ed, he spelled it wrong." I guess I was the one who was wrong! What's the deal with the "h" in Bronchos? Thanks for educating me!

The Swaz tells me that it is the spanish form of Broncos and in the 1800's it was picked and they stuck with it...or something like that. Anyway, I told him I can't wait for him to be a Bronc-HO. Man am I glad that part is over with.

1922 Mrs. Wantland suggests the name "Bronchos" for the football team.

Mrs. Wantland was the school's president's wife, she thought Broncho was more regal than without the H as I've been told.

Sean Flynn signed with South Dakota State University

http://www.lansingcurrent.com/news/2006/may/04/flynn_wrestle_sdsu/

------------------------
Flynn to wrestle at SDSU
By Chris Wristen

Thursday, May 4, 2006

Ever since he first stepped onto a wrestling mat at age 7, Sean Flynn has dreamed of being a college wrestler.

That dream is about to become reality for the Lansing High senior. Flynn signed his letter of intent April 18 to be an NCAA Division I wrestler at South Dakota State University.

-----------------------

Lansing High senior Sean Flynn, pictured center front, signed his letter of intent April 18 to wrestle at South Dakota State University. With him at the signing ceremony are, front row, his parents, Mike and Paula Flynn, and, back row, from left, LHS wrestling coach Ron Averill, brother Nick Flynn and LHS assistant wrestling coach Brian Rees.

--------------------------------------------

“It’s pretty exciting knowing that I kind of have a contract and I’m going there,” Flynn said. “There’s really no turning back now, and it’s not all talk anymore. I really am going there.”

SDSU has been competing at the Division II level for the past few years, but it officially will become Division I next season. That means it’s possible Flynn could find himself on the mat at the NCAA national championships a year from now if his season goes well enough.

“You’d watch the college NCAA’s on TV and see all these good matches. I’ve always wanted to be in one of those type of matches that everybody watches,” he said.

Whether Flynn reaches the national stage remains to be seen. For now, he said he simply would try his best. He knows it won’t be easy.

“I talked to (Missouri wrestler and LHS grad) Vince Demarest about his first year of college wrestling, and he said the first six months is the worst six months of your whole life,” Flynn said. “It’s like you’re a practice dummy all over. You sometimes won’t be able to get a takedown on anybody. You get a lot of failures, but sooner or later it’ll be success.”

LHS coach Ron Averill said he expected Flynn to handle the transition to college wrestling well. He said mental toughness was one of Flynn’s strengths.

“His greatest thing is his mental attitude,” Averill said. “He’s always had the tools and all the things to work with. It’s just been the attitude that he needed to work on the most, to the point where he could really focus and step up and be ready to compete. We’ve really seen him turn a corner the last couple years, and especially this last year.”

A four-time state qualifier, Flynn placed sixth at the Kansas Class 5A state meet as a 135-pound junior. He then was the state runner-up this year at 140 pounds. Flynn said he will wrestle at 149 pounds next year at SDSU.

As tough as college wrestling may be, Flynn’s greatest challenge may be time management. In addition to taking a full load of courses and attending wrestling practices and tournaments, Flynn also will be on an ROTC scholarship. The decision to go the military route resulted from the inspiration of his father, Mike Flynn, a career officer in the Army.

“He’s been the biggest role model,” Flynn said of his father. “I’ve had different coaches down the line, but he’s the one that takes me aside and tells me what to do. He helped me with the ROTC thing and getting me into college. If I didn’t have him, I don’t know if I’d even be going to college.”

Mike Flynn said the combination of things on his son’s plate would help him be successful in college.

“He’s got three very demanding things (school, ROTC, wrestling) going on, so his job is going to be trying to balance his time to try to do all of those things,” Mike Flynn said. “I think the focus of Army ROTC really is to teach leadership. They’re trying to train you to be an Army officer, so a lot of their training is going to be on leadership, time management, discipline and those type of things. I think that’s going to help him.”

Mike Flynn said his son had matured a lot in the past year and would be ready for all of those challenges.

“I’m very proud of him because he’s made this for himself, and he’s surpassed all the things that I’ve ever done,” Mike Flynn said. “I think every parent wants their kid to do just a little better, and he’s done that. I’m a very proud dad.”

Sean,

Congratulations! Your hard work is starting to pay off and it is well deserved. It has been an honor to have the opportunity to work with you over the past year and look forward to watching you succeed at the next level.

Thanks for being a role model for our little guys. I look forward to the Christmas and summer breaks when you come home and work with the little guys.

Finally, you already are a part of a unique "band of brothers" because of your wrestling. I can't wait until 4 years from now when we get to welcome you into the Army. You will be a great leader of soldiers!

To everyone else....

Keep an eye on Sean, he is just starting to scratch the surface on his potential! Expect to hear a lot of good things in the future.

Congrats Sean ... you come from a great family and will do great!

Also, I remember when Eric Akin was a freshman in college and was down in the dumps because he couldn't score ... a takedown!

That's not really to big of a deal considering you practiced with Mo Lawal.

No Newman signees?

Only one Ft. Hays listed?

One last thing, I did hear (I think from Hurla) that Stewert from Paola was going to Lindenwood as well. And also that the Madl twins are going to CMSU to be with the Baker twins.

EDMDOND (May 23) – Long-time wrestling powerhouse Central Oklahoma has added two more recruits to its impressive list with the signing of Kansas high school standout Jarrett Edison and junior college transfer Paul Mayfield.

Edison, a projected 197-pounder for the Bronchos, was a state champion at 215 pounds last year at Northwest Wichita High School after earning runner-up honors in 2005. A two-time league and regional champion, he finished with a 146-18 career record and was the Outstanding Wrestler after winning the Brute/Adidas national championship.

Mayfield, a product of Ardmore High School, won the 149-pound junior college national title as a sophomore at Neosho (Kan.) County Community College this season. He was a two-time state placer at Ardmore, winning the state title as a senior.

“Jarrett and Paul are both excellent wrestlers who have a chance to come in and help us right away,” UCO coach David James said. “They’ve experienced a lot of success and are great athletes eager to come in here and make a difference.”

The 14-time national champion Bronchos, who finished fourth in the NCAA Division II national tournament this season, signed three Oklahoma products earlier – two-time state champion Tyler Zukerman of Lawton MacArthur, state champion and two-time junior college All-American Luke Elmore of Stillwater and Labette (Kan.) Community College and All-Stater Corby Ray of Sapulpa.

A friend told me he read in the local paper that Nash Burtin had signed with Labette. Good to know that even some of the "true" weight class kids are getting a chance at the next level.

He wrestled for 2 years at Labette I thought. Last I talked to him he was going to get involved in mixed martial arts/submission fighting.

After a baseball stint at Pittsburg State University, Marcus Bowman has signed with Labette. Will be a great addition to the cards...
