The 141 match was a great match. 2 reversals in last 30 seconds to win it for York. Newman wrestled with attitude as well. Good to see it and the crowd was pretty rowdy. It was a lot of fun.

Mimi Miller not eligible yet at 125 apparently hurts Bacone. I think he gets fall or tech over Wall.

Sweazy, are you sure about the eligibility issue? If Miller was ineligible would he not also have been ineligible for the takedown tournament? The plan is to redshirt Miller.

Bacon Wrestling News!

"Mimi is a big time wrestler, probably one of the top two or three 125 pounders in the country at any division. He had the misfortune of being behind the top 125 pounder while at OU, which is why he was forced to compete at 133. Mimi will redshirt this season, then we fully expect him to come out and win three National Titles!"

If the plan is to redshirt Mimi...he wouldn't have been allowed to have Bacone listed as where he's from...he would have had to wear his own singlet, and been unnattached.

Why isn't Miller eligible? Unless it is academics, I didn't think there was a waiting period when transferring down in divisions.

Keep in mind the Labette Tournament is a takedown (non-sanctioned and non-folkstyle scoring) tournament - and because the event is non-sanctioned, affiliation may not be as important and may not be tracked as accurately as it normally would.

True he would have had to pay his own travel and entry fee if he is redshirting, but (at least in year's gone by) many entrants wear their own singlet at the event and many choose not to wear headgear.

If he isn't eligible, wouldn't all Sweazy referenced still apply? Can/would a school pay travel, entry fee, per diem, etc for an ineligible wrestler to compete (I'm asking, as I don't know the answer)?

If they are ineligible, they aren't allowed to represent the team as they don't qualify to meet the standards to be there in the first place.

It appears it is a common practice to list a wrestler who is competing in his redshirt season as a participant from their respective university.

The results from the 2004 Central Missouri State University Open Tournament list several college wrestlers who redshirted last year as representing their universities.

Stanford Team Roster at the Central Missouri State Open!

30th Annual CMSU Open
Stanford University
Weight Name Record
125 Tanner Gardner 5- 0

Tanner Gardner redshirted last season for Stanford.

University of Oklahoma Team Roster at the Central Missouri State Open!

30th Annual CMSU Open
University of Oklahoma
Weight Name Record
149 Will Rowe 6- 2

Will Rowe redshirted last season for the University of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State University Team Roster at the Central Missouri State Open Tournament!

30th Annual CMSU Open
Oklahoma State University
Weight Name Record
125 Coleman Scott 7- 1
133 Nathan Morgan 5- 0
157 Newly McSpadden 4- 2

The tournament was held prior to the decision to pull both Scott and Morgan from their redshirt season. McSpadden remained a redshirt.

Check the results from the Fort Hays State University Bob Smith Open and you will find numerous examples where redshirts are listed from their respective universities. Including James Annon who redshirted last season for Fort Hays State.

Aaron -

Sorry I am so slow, but am confused. Can you please clarify? Why did you state he was ineligible while dismissing the notion that he might be redshirting - while your supporting rationale would be the same under either scenario?

Sounds like I was pretty clear giving the either this or that statement. IF he's redshirting...Part 1 if he's ineligible part 2.

Some of the scores are very misleading as some of the matches were closer than indicated. I know that 125, 174 and 184 were all closer than what the score shows from a competitive standpoint.

Wall at 125 appeared to have a takedown early on in the match, but it wasn't rewarded.

Chenoweth was only down 8-5 early in the 3rd following an escape, but got caught in a funky scramble and gave up the 2 and 3nf. There was a point where he reversed and had Hess on his back, but alas no points given. It was a pretty good match with some great scrambles.

Johnson had a very questionable call go against him on a peterson granby. Didn't look like anything was secure but Meredith got 2 reverse and 2 nf criteria. Meredith got a takedown in the 3rd to make it 9-6 as a final.

Other notes:

Duffendack did a pretty good job early with Jones, but just gave up a situation where he got nabbed into a tight cradle from neutral and couldn't break the hands before the fall.

McGrew got put in a banana split for the fall, and I'm hurting from it.

Jenlink looks like a 184lb guy compared to Leadingfox. Love the heart and commitment to the sport he has, but seems very small at HWT.

Of course I got a chance to talk with the big guy. I was the guy that took him on his visit many moons ago at UCO, and we've kept in touch through all of our hardships we've endured. There was some cousin of his there that was pretty hot. I talked with A.J. as well, I've seen Josh eat for 3 hours at a buffet once! LOL

NEWMAN WINS BCU INVITE, LOGAN QUALIFIES FOR NATIONALS

Briar Cliff University freshman Jordaryl Logan went 3-0 and won the 184-pound title at today’s Briar Cliff Invitational, held at the Newman Flanagan Center, on the college’s campus. Logan qualified for nationals with the victory, becoming the fifth Briar Cliff wrestler to qualify for March 3-4 event, which will be held at the Tyson Events Center, in Sioux City, Iowa. In his first round match, Logan defeated York’s Chris Fowler by technical fall (19-0). He then defeated Morningside’s Bob Seger, 5-2 and Newman’s Nathan Brenner, 4-0. Miller, 141-pounder Art Clark, 174-pounder Joe Rodman and Carlson have already qualified for nationals.

Five of the seven teams in the tournament had at least one champion during the event. Morningside wrestlers won three weight classes; 141 (Jake Thomas), 165 (Joe Keleher) and heavyweight (Matt Kastl). Johnson and Chenoweth both make the National rankings at 8th in the recent poll. Newman University debuts as a team in the 17th spot.

Chenoweth has only lost 4 matches (Malloy FHSU, Hess UCO, Snider UCO, and the Northwestern Iowa wrestler)

He loses some of those wins off his record because of the 4year v. NJCAA rule. If you attend a 4 year program and compete v. NJCAA your wins and losses don't count (It is viewed as an exhibition for the 4 year schools). However if a NJCAA guy were to beat him or lose to him it would go on the NJCAA guy's record...very weird rule but the truth.

Yes! Newman had 9 qualifiers coming into this tournament. You can qualify on % win loss record as long as it's above 63% or something like that. Also if you place in the top 1/4 of a tournament. Thus if there are 1-7guys you must take 1st. 8-11 you must finish top two and so on...

C. Qualification
Automatic Qualifying - Individual wrestlers can qualify for the NAIA Wrestling National Championships in one of the three following manners:

1. Qualifying standards through regional tournaments (regions are listed in Appendix A of this manual):

The top four wrestlers per weight class in a regional tournament shall qualify for the national championship. All regions will wrestle through 5th place in the bracket and the 4th-place position will be contested if the 4th and 5th-place wrestlers have not wrestled.

NOTE: Athletes cannot compete in a lower weight class at the national championships than they competed in at the regional tournament.

2. An eligible wrestler with a .666 or better winning percentage against four-year accredited intercollegiate competition prior to the national championships entry deadline shall qualify, provided the wrestler has competed in a minimum of 12 matches during the season.

NOTE: Matches against junior college and/or club wrestlers do not count in individual won-loss record.

3. Qualifying through an intercollegiate tournament during the season (excluding take-down tournaments):
-In intercollegiate tournaments with 32 or more wrestlers in weight class, the wrestler must place in top 8.
-In intercollegiate tournaments with 28-31 participating wrestlers in weight class, the wrestler must place in the top 7.
-In intercollegiate tournaments with 24-27 participating wrestlers in weight class, the wrestler must place in the top 6.
-In intercollegiate tournaments with 20-23 participating wrestlers in weight class, the wrestler must place in the top 5.
-In intercollegiate tournaments with 16-19 participating wrestlers in weight class, the wrestler must place in the top 4.
-In intercollegiate tournaments with 12-15 participating wrestlers in weight class, the wrestler must place in the top 3.
-In intercollegiate tournaments with 8-11 participating wrestlers in weight class, the wrestler must place in the top 2.
-In intercollegiate tournaments with 4-7 participating wrestlers in weight class, the wrestler must win weight class.

I was looking at the 6-5 and wondering if his opponent got dinged for stalling or an illegal move.

Obviously, Curtis is worthy of congratulations too. I guess now you can have a "Newman National Champions" meeting and which would not include Mr. Wall, and you can feel lonely too :p . I would like to congratulate all of the qualifiers and especially Isaac. He's a humble kid, unless Chenowith reminds him of certain things, and a great competitor. Hopefully, next year will be an even better year for Isaac and a repeat for Curtis.

Isaac had some good matches, he should have gone farther but a bad called stopped that unfortunatley. He should great sportsmanship and held his head high! Congrats and good job to all that made it there. And agreed next year will be even better for Newman!! Repeat with additional Champs!!! GO JETS!!!

If you first don't succeed, try try again.
