As you'll read elsewhere, I'm in Fargo with Mike Juby and Team Kansas! The anticipation of wrestling is barely bearable!

Most of my reporting of the events will be on other pages but I will ask for feedback, questions or requests to come here!

A few of you have been bemoaning the fact that several of our "best" wrestlers are missing from the roster this year. I never recall a year where claims of that fact could not be made and perhaps this year, there are a few more absences than normal.

However, in 2006 the team that is competing will be representing the State of Kansas! These, are great young men!

I always wonder, who will be the next All-American! I always wonder, if our past All-Americans will improve their ranking this year. And I wonder, if a few will live up to their potential and be our next National Champ!

You might recall that in the past I have suggested that certain competitions are "watered down" and All-American status might be less than it could be. Clearly, that is not the case in the Asics/Vaughn Junior and Cadet National Championships! I can't help but recall the Kansas State multiple Champs that go 0-2 or 0-4 at this competition.

It's not been that long ago that our own Danny Grater went 0-4 at this tournament and came back the next year, to be the National Champ.

I can hardly wait till 24 whistles blow starting the action at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota!

I haven't tried at the Dome yet! At the dorms I don't have the security clearance to get on wireless. Currently, I am Jub's computer on a dial-up server!

Briefly updating what's been happening this afternoon! The Cadets had a practice session from 2 to 3. (Mike has some pictures posted)

From 3 to 4 a few of the coaches attended a Greco rules clinic.

Now ... just vegging!

Thanks for the color commentary Randy! Those of us unable to make it to Fargo will be glued to trackwrestling.com and look forward to hearing the details from our Kansas scout.

Randy, I don’t know what you may have been in a prior life but your gift for writing commentary is unparallel only to Prant! Your eloquence and impeccable keymanship rivals the likes of George Plimpton, with the passion of Keith Jackson! (Kids you have to over 40 to know who these guys are) In my readings it always feels as if we were side by side! When the book comes out “My Life” the Randy Hinderliter story, it’s sure to be a best seller… Thanks, good luck guys and be safe!

Mark, I agree with you about Randy's writing abilities. But I would bet his first book would have a better chance of becoming a best seller if he could do a biography of someone like Tom Watson. And I bet that would be a good book since Randy seems to know something about golf too. I would buy that book. I would also buy any kind of wrestling book Randy would write. It would really be good if he could start some type of Kansas high school wrestling or general high school sports newspaper or magazine. I know that it was tried recently by someone else and only lasted one year but I miss it.

First, I am absolutely floored by all the compliments. I'm truly humbled to be included in the same breath with a man I truly admire, Grant Parker!

Writing use to come much easier for me but I still enjoy sharing in this way! More later ... we're wrestling in Fargo, North Dakota!

Good morning from Fargo!

I hope the report from late last night was not so muddled up that you couldn't read it. Trying to explain the new rules is challenge enough but accompanying that with the wee hours etc. may have been a bit much.

Anyway ... off to breakfast ... I have a class to lead at 9 am ... 1st Session of Junior Greco ... another Session of Cadets ... tons of fun!

It's 10:30 a.m. on the floor of the Fargodome. The teams are going though their paces, some stretching, some drilling ... wow, he just lost power in the building ... it's slowly coming back on! That was a thrill!!

As I was saying, teams are in the midst of their preparations. For some, that means team meetings and rah, rah sessions such as Team Ohio is going through. Several are jogging and going through agility drills.

Music is playing in the background, Let the Bodies Hit the Floor, is probably a fitting song! Also from the head table you have a few informational announcements.

A few hundred wrestlers and coaches are gathered around the brackets trying to determine who they are matched up with. Officials are dispensing and setting up the equipment for their tables.

This morning we will have Cadets on a few mats but the majority of the wrestling surfaces will be reserved for the Juniors. "Five minutes till we clear the mats" interrupts the musical rendition of Living on a Prayer.

In a few minutes, the announcement of mat assignments will begin. The announcers go through the first bouts, the on-deck bouts, and finally the matches in-the-hole.

I guess I'd better take a brief break and prepare for the a day of wrestling!

Way to go, Ateve Standrus! Good to see that Hat Town heavies are still holding up the far end of the mat room.

Thanks for all the updates, Handy. They're fantastic.

It looks like these are the Kansas placers:

84 - Jeff Vesta - 1st/2nd match
140 - Tyler Koehn - 5th/6th match
152 - Cameron Riojas - 5th/6th match
171 - Romero Cotton - 1st/2nd match
215 - Atticus Disney - 1 match to get him in finals
275 - Bobby Doxon - 7th/8th match vs. Andrus
275 - Steve Andrus - 7th/8th match vs. Doxon

If Disney beats Spencer Desena (NY), he will meet Tyrell Fortune from Oregon. (A 2X national champion).

Great effort from our KS Cadets!!!

Swayz informed me that the guy Furches pinned in :18 is who Goodwin has next, on the opposite end, Furches gets a guy that beat Goodwin 3-1,4-1.

Hello all y'all ... yes I am still alive ... the Fargo jail is a nice place to visit!

Jike Muby (did I do that right Prant?) reports that the temperature yesterday in Fargo was 3 degrees hotter than that in Hutchinson. It's been a bit rough sleeping (no a/c) but I'm surviving. Actually we did get a brief shower this morning to cool things off but I hope that it doesn't make it steamy later!

As reported, 3 Cadets have made it into the Greco finals. Jeff Vesta has earned the right to face Ryan Mango from Missouri. This will prove to be quite the challenge for Jeff but he is up for it.

Romero Cotton will match against Nate Schiedel from New York. Shiedel will enter the contest already having one loss on his resume and if all goes according to plan he'll pick up his 2nd loss about 4:30 this afternoon!

Atticus Disney meets Tyrell Fortune from Oregon. Fortune's accolades have already been documented and Atticus will have to tough match. But to paraphrase a bit of Jimmy Duggan, "hard, is suppose to be hard ... if it wasn't hard, everyone would do it!"

And, it's not all about our finalists, our other All-Americans have done us proud! Tyler Koehn, Cameron Riojas, Bobby Doxon and Stephen Andrus.

p.s. by the way. the wireless server has been a bit spotty and today, is non-existant. I've heard something about an ethernet and it sounds a bit like 2 tin cans and a stretch of kite string but we'll try!

Jeff Vesta was defeated by Ryan Mango of MO 8-0, 7-0 in the finals. Great national runner-up finish, but Mango was just too much.

Mango… so is this any relation to the manimal that was featured on the Missouri site a while back with the Greco video? That guy was unreal! Were proud of you Jeff! Way to go! Make some noise in freestyle… after weigh-in you got 20 lbs. to put on for high school. That’s a lot of frosties!

Ryan Mango is the little brother of Spencer Mango and was coached by several members of the OTC wrestlers as well as his brother.

Again great job, Jeff.

Pescalia of MO defaulted to Caldwell by injury. He either got hurt that match or the one before.

... just stealing a few seconds to update you a little further ... Riojas got 6th, Romero is a NATIONAL CHAMP ... Atticus should of been but lost on a fleeing call (more later) ... Andrus 7th and Doxon 8th.

... also the girls are doing fairly well and Beth Johnson is still undefeated!

... off to a retirement reception ... and I will try to update with stories by morning!

I already know what it was all about! I heard from a very reliable source that you were wearing a trench coat in the heat of the summer… very suspicious… would open it up slowly, reveal your… collection of counterfeit bronze cards in front of the Fargo Dome!

Caldwell loses 4-5, 1-1 to Cody Adams MN, and places 8th.

That gives us 4 All-Americans in Junior GR!

98 - Nathan Furches - 1st
98 - Brandon Goodwin - 7th
119 - Larry Perez - 2nd
125 - Tyler Caldwell - 8th

Nathan Furches completely dominated the kid he faced! Nathan Furches, National Champion has a nice ring to it!

Brandon Goodwin was equally dominant in the win for 7th. Goodwin is an All-American!

And Tyler Caldwell had a lead but couldn't hold on, settling for 8th, and is still an All-American!

... and now, as Paul Harvey would say, you'll hear the rest of story!

I'm embarrassed to hear that the news travels so fast. Yes, I was arrested for an incident outside the Fargodome. Yes, it did involve a trench coat (that I had borrowed from Parkwayred), it did involve some counterfeit Bronze cards, and an attempt to interfere with the judicial process.

Originally, I was also charged with, of all things, indecent exposure. I argued my own case (Barry Disney wouldn't answer his cell phone) and made an objection toward the decency part! It was my opinion that while it might not be tasteful (exposing oneself in public) that I am still fairly decent.

The judge viewed some video that was presented. And although it was a full frontal picture, the judge dismissed that portion of the charges, for a lack of evidence. I really could have done without the magistrates unprofessional laughter and I tried to claim my lack of evidence was from the icy conditions. When it's 96 degrees and one is outside wearing a borrowed trench coat that argument was scoffing in the face of the facts.

(by the way Red, the local constable has confiscated your trench coat, holding it until it's proper owner can be located. I tried to steer them away from you but in the pocket of the coat they found a picture. On the back it said, "To Red, With All Our Love" and it was signed, Waunita and the kids. The picture was of a fairly attractive but brutally rough gal with long jet black hair and a uni-brow, she had a set of triplets in her arms. And as if that wasn’t strange enough, all 3 babies had curly red hair. Also in the pocket was a book of matches from some establishment outside of Abilene on I-70! They may track you down)

But on to the charges! As the Swayz pointed out and I confirmed, the trip to Fargo is “one-way” only, I need to get back to Ottawa and needed to raise some money. On first thought, I was going to pawn the trench coat you loaned me but that was only going to earn me $5.00. I considered selling my body but I recalled the scandal of a few years ago in Fargo and felt that Sir Richard would surely crucify me on this web page.

I had in my bag, some old USA Wrestling Kansas coaches floor passes that I had received from Nedly and was trying to peddle them. But they wouldn’t sell! So, the next best thing was to try my collection of counterfeit Bronze cards. After all, with a Bronze card you can save yourself $75 at the gate in Fargo.

So, there I was standing amongst all the sidewalk vendors outside the Fargodome with the Bronze cards lining the inside of "our" coat! Initially I did have clothes on under the coat but that was just too hot. So, yes, I did strip down before putting on the coat!

I stood there displaying my wares when the Gestapo from USA Wrestling first approached me. They had called the local heat who were just pulling into the parking lot from three directions. I shed the coat and by the way, the hamburglar mask you had in the pocket, I was wearing that too! I would of made a clean getaway but tripped in the coat that was gathered around my feet.

I have a hearing with USA Wrestling and also a court date for later this week. I had reluctantly called Mike Juby to post my bail. He did but now I’m doubly indebted and may have to stay in Fargo until I can figure out a way to earn some money. They do have some casinos in town. I may try to parlay my last 87 cents, I spent my last dollar bill on a bottle of Diet Mountain Dew, into something bigger. I will keep you updated!

So if and when I get my coat back, is it going to need to be cleaned? as for the Wanita thing, I want a DNA test! Red hair don't mean a thing! Ask my Dad... or I think he's my Dad. The matches, I found those at a certain tattoo parlor out west! If you can get to "our" coat look at the inside pocket there should be a lottery ticket for special occasions! Rub it and see if your luck changes! I hope to see you before Christmas! If not I will send you a carton of smokes… they tell me that they are like gold in prison!

P.S.

Randy do you call this a "POSITIVE differance" ?

Kansas finished well in the Greco competition. Out of 38 states competing, here are the total numbers for KS and our neighboring states:

KS - 11 AA's
NE - 3
CO - 6
OK - 5
MO - 14

Only 3 AA's behind MO, who won the Junior Greco Duals and placed 2nd at the Cadet Duals. Our Kansas wrestling community salutes their amazing efforts! Time for Freestyle!

The Cadets start today at 10:30 and the Juniors tomorrow at 10:30.

A few extra highlights that I noticed:

* Gage Deere pinned two guys and had a strong tournament.

* Means wrestled tough with two studs, Olsen(GA) and York(WI).

* Napier's win over Earp(NC).

* Jordan Brown wrestled close with Chris Kline(OH).

* Tanenbaum is on a roll.

WOW. Erisman drew the "B" side of 171. In my opinion, that is the brutal side of the bracket. Hinton, Patrovich, Sanderson, Blanton, Waltko, Haynes and Robbins!!!!! The A side "only" has Smith, Giffen and Sitch.

Amazing. Kissell did well at the Duals and the guy that beat Sanderson, David Thompson is for real also. Could be a door opening for Erisman...

Looks like Erisman dropped a heartbreaker to Blanton. Hopefully he can win out with and the rest of the pool beats the snot out of each other.

From the bracket it looks like Tyler Koehn and Jess Stevens from Ohio have both lost twice to the same two kids. It looks like they will now wrestle each other to see who goes on for the 7/8th place match. Can someone tell me if I am reading this right?

In any case, Great job out there Tyler and good luck if you do have more matches!!

Aaron Ely has had his knee bothering him for some time. It flared up in Greco and although he made weight it was too swollen to wrestle. Thus, he sits on the sideline.

I am elated on one front but disappointed on others. Furches and Erisman losing was a real downer but our five in the finals is great.

Why the early departure?

Well, it's 10:50 on Saturday morning. The Jubster had some business situations and had to leave.

We received several phone calls from Fargo, updating us on the progress. What an evening for the Cadets! Overall, we went 5 of 7 in the Championship session!

The next chapter in the continuing saga of me, Randy Hinderliter, public offender.

First, to Curtis, I must enact Man Law 37, Section b, paragraph 2: or to be more explanatory, what happens in Sioux City stays in Sioux City! That’s all I’m going to say about that.

Next, thanks Red, I can always depend on you to remind me that I have not only let down the Kansas wrestling community but all the youth in Kansas. I am so ashamed.

I find it funny as I reflect on the lifelong bridge builder. He has built bridges all his life, has countless bridges all across the Nation that are a tribute to his craftsmanship and to define what he is. But let that bridge builder have a momentary lapse in his conduct, just one time, and the rest of life, he will be known as a public flasher.

Even worse, everyone he meets will laugh him at and small children will poke him with a stick. He will always be ashamed and reminded of his transgression … he may ask for forgiveness … but to some … no … he is no longer a bridge builder. But these are the cards that I have dealt to myself. I admit, this one time, I did not live up to my challenge, that of being a positive influence in the live of kids. For that … I apologize.

As you might recall, I did have a hearing with USA Wrestling and a court date as well. It seems someone has made an argument in my behalf. I suspect the man who says “spending a week in Fargo is more fun than a cruise for me,” yes; Barry the barrister pitched my case. USA Wrestling decided that based on the testimony of others, they would let the State of Kansas handle my case. But I did have to forfeit my collection of counterfeit Bronze cards. Further I agree that I must have at least 5 Kansas coaches in the Silver College next year! (hear that Mike Miller)

The next session of wrestling in the Fargodome, I was paged to go to the head table. I climbed the stairs to the podium and said I was Randy Hinderliter! At my announcement, the gal at the microphone echoed, “here’s Randy Hinderliter.” Almost in unison and with military precision everyone pointed their fingers at me and snickered … there was even some out-right LMAO. Me? I dropped my head in shame.

At my court hearing later in the day, the City of Fargo, offered me a diversion agreement. I’m not sure why they had to play the video of my exploits … over and over again. All I could do is bite my lower lip and sign the papers. Part of my arrangement is, I have to walk every sidewalk in Fargo, and find the oldest existing piece. (so far I found a few dated 1947)

I was leaving Fargo a free man, something that the magistrate suggested strongly. But you might recall my financial difficulties are what landed me in hoosegow in the first place.

I was back where I started … but recalled Red’s suggestion that I search the inside pocket of the confiscated trench coat for a lottery ticket. The coat was on a table in the courtroom. I asked if I could retrieve something from the pocket. The judge, the one with the unprofessional laughter, said “go ahead.” I searched the interior pocket and found a few surprises Red had left me. In the pocket was a bottle of strawberry flavored lip-gloss, with glitter, and a pair of black fish net stockings. The stockings had the toes ripped out. Apparently someone with awfully large feet has been wearing them. But I did find the scratch off ticket.

My plan was to only take the lottery ticket but the judge called me back to retrieve the “rest” of “my” stuff. I shoved the stockings and the bottle of lip-gloss, with glitter and strawberry flavor, deep in my pocket. Quietly cursing Red under my breath, I left the courtroom but I was also thanking Red for the lotto ticket.

On the sidewalk in front of the courthouse I took a dime (part of my last 87 cents) out of my pocket and began to scratch. I revealed first, a $500.00, the next was a free ticket, the next was again $500.00,the next $2.00, the next another $2.00. This particular ticket I needed to have three matching numbers. It’s hard to scratch a ticket with your fingers crossed but I managed. Low and behold, I had won $500.00. I danced around and pumped by fists in the air, proclaiming, “I’m a winner, I’m a winner!” My celebration would make any winner at the Greco Nationals proud.

I took my winning ticket into the North Dakota lottery headquarters. I plopped my ticket down on the table and confidently said, “I’d like cash!” The $500 bucks would come in handy, I could pay Juby back, have enough cash to get home on, and have enough to buy a weeks supply of Diet Mountain Dew. The clerk picked up the ticket and said, “this tickets no good.”

My jaw and my heart dropped … “how could that be,” I inquired. The clerk confirmed that I was presenting a valid lotto ticket … but it was purchased at some adult book and novelty shop outside of Abilene, Kansas. “If you want $500 for it, take it back to Kansas” she told me. She went on to tell me my winning ticket had a 1% face value outside of Kansas. I pondered my plight … and told her that I would accept the $5.00.

Clutching the bill in my hand I walked the streets of Fargo. 1999, 2004, 1967 … I thought I would check dates on the sidewalk while I walked. I walked aimlessly for nearly four hours until it was too dark to read the sidewalk stencils. Up ahead I saw some neon lights and before long I was standing in front of Bucks, a local watering hole and casino. I walked in and peered into the smoky darkness. Much to my chagrin, the place was full of USA Wrestling coaches and officials and they were all pointing and laughing at me … some were ROFLMAO.

I stepped to the bar. I was parched and order a DMD. The bartender retrieved my selection and said, “that’ll be $4.00.” I reluctantly un-clutched my hand and the crumpled $5.00 bill fell on the bar. The barkeep handed my back a single, $1.00 bill and then she tapped on her tip jar. My eyes darted back and forth, between my $1, the tip jar, and the bar maiden.

This was the first good look I got of the woman behind the bar. She had jet-black hair, she was kind of attractive in a brutal sort of way, and she had a uni-brow. Suddenly my thoughts were of the snapshot of Waunita and the three redheaded triplets.

I really needed some good karma about now. I dug in my pocket, searching for my 87 cents. I opened my hand over the bar and sure enough there was 87 cents but also the bottle of strawberry flavored lip-gloss, with glitter and the black fishnet stockings. The bartender reached out and as she collected the lip-gloss and stockings she said, “I’ll see that Red gets these back.” I stood there in stunned silence as she again tapped the rim of her tip jar. I scooped up the 87 cents and looked down and watched my coins slowly drop into her jar. I looked up and into the eyes of a big burly man with a uni-brow. I grabbed my soda, my dollar, and walked away.

I walked to a far corner of bar and found the penny slots. I got a dollars worth of pennies and began to feed them one at a time into the slot machine. Time and time again, I fed the machine and pulled the lever. I had not won a thing and looked into my hand and counted 14 cents. If I was desperate before, now I was sinking into despair. I took a penny and kissed it. I looked at it closely and noticed that it was minted in 1955, the year I was born. I put it in the machine and pulled the arm of the bandit.

Suddenly the machine came alive, bells began to ring and lights began to flash. The credit meter on the slot machine read 100, 200, 300, 1000, 5000 when it had finally finished I had won 8,700 credits. I fell to my knees and screamed, “thank you Red!” The matron helped me to my feet and dozens of people, even some wrestling people were gathered around applauding.

I walked to the nearby counter and said I would like to cash out. I was tickled to death as the cashier began to lay $20 bills on the counter; I would me taking home enough cash to make the house payment for a few months. First one, two, three, four twenties and then a five and 2 ones! I must have looked puzzled as I did the math in my head. I then gathered up the $87.00 and headed for the door.

Mike Juby has agreed to accept $80.00 in partial payment of what I owe him and give me a ride back home. I am heading back to Kansas now and we must be getting close, as the thermometer has jumped up to 102 degrees. I’m elated, I have a few bucks in my pocket, I’m going to make it back to Kansas, and the Jubster even bought me a bottle of DMD before we left … I hope he stops soon … it’s getting to be a bit uncomfortable on this side of the van!

Congratulations to Nathan Furches for his victory in the consolation finals match.

Nathan defeated Ridge Kiley from Iowa 3-0, 3-1 to become Kansas only Junior Freestyle All-American and Kansas only Junior to win All-American status in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle competition.

Richard or anybody else,

Do you know if this year was the most All-Americans we've had FS/Greco combined for Cadets/Jrs? Got to be the most finalists I'd guess.

I don't have a list on the computer but they are on the back of the shirts. It appears that Kansas has had 8 AA in Greco Cadet one time and 8 AA in FS Cadet one time (before this year). But it also appears that 13 AA (GR and FS)combined is the most the Cadets have had in one year.
