About how many high school girls are going to be wrestling this year for their high school? I only know of 2 so far in my area, myself being one of them. I was just curious as to whether our numbers were growing yet.

Isn't one of them Tina Karol? She is a great wrestler. You saw her in Fargo last year. Hope to see her and Emma and some of these other girls in Fargo this year.

Olathe North has 4 or 5 wrestling this season.

We have 5 women currently in our program at Olathe North who are making great strides and learning fast. While I was the head coach at DeSoto HS I also coached 5 young women over my two seasons there and of them Nichole Husted signed with Missouri Valley to wrestle.

I hope to see the numbers continue to grow, and hopefully one day see Womens High School Wrestling as an actual program as it is for the men. But right now, we are in the beginning phases, and the more experience and mat time you young women get (regardless if it is against men or women) will increase your chances to take your skills to a higher level where you will be competing completely with other women.

Good luck to all of you this season and continue to get better. That is the main purpose of this sport: to improve ourselves every day mentally and physically.

Saw a number at the Derby and McPherson Dual last night and I agree with Coach DeYoe, one day it would be a great addition to have some womens teams out there on the high school level.

Is the glass half empty of half full? It's a matter of perspective. I like to think that allowing women to compete in Olympic wrestling competition can only help. It legitimizes the sport and sends the message to young girls that such dreams can become a reality because other women have turned their dreams into reality. I hope USA Wrestling and USGWA will share their membership and participation numbers so that we somehow determine if we have more girls wrestling since the recent Olympic games were held. The sport has such potential for growth but we'll have to accept that it will always grow at a slower pace than we would like. We need to support programs like the Kansas Krusaders and support tournaments that offer girls divisions if we want to contribute to the success and continued growth of women's wrestling.

I think Title IX may have a backdoor to saving men's wrestling, by adding women's it equalizes the gender ratio for both sports, like boy's/girl's golf, but also it promotes a sport mainly dominated by men before this time table, i think they may help save wrestling as a whole, if it get's catchy enough perhaps in the next 5-10 years we can see Universities adding Men's & Women's wrestling programs instead of demolishing men's alone, and may help reverse the disappearance of wrestling on the collegiate level, just my opinion but could yield some results?

I agree with Alex. I have wrestled a female before and it was real tough because she was reall flexable more so than any guy. I support females in wrestling but at the same time wish they whould have there own, for the reason being for as many of us people who like seeing women wrestle there are many people who dispise it. So why not have a comprimise and let both have their way?
