The Academy of USAWKS Wrestling* will be accepting nominations for the first annual USAWKS Wrestling Awards. The Awards presentation will coincide with the 2007 Academy Awards on February 25, at 7: OO PM Central. The Awards will be affectionately known as The Pete's in honor of Kansas first Olympic Gold Medallist at any sport, Peter Mehringer, the 1932 Olympic Gold Medal Winner in Freestyle wrestling at the weight of 192 pounds.

Individuals within the Kansas wrestling community and with interest in the Kansas wrestling community who use the usawks.com message boards are invited to nominate individuals for the various awards. The awards, in their initial year will include the following.

Now have 7 confirmed Judges, and nominations coming in by numerous people. If you have not pm'd me back and said, "Yes count me in.," or something like that, you are not on the judges list. If anyone can think of other worthy judges let me know. I have heard from 3 potential judges with a "maybe," and another 2 with a, "no I don’t have time." I understand that and am fine. I still need to hear from about 14 more. If anyone would like to judge, ask me, I'll tell you "yea" or "nea," and some may want to nominate others for judges. BTW, the person nominated as a judge has to be a usawks message board member. Here is the current list, remember, judges will narrow these down to 3, and then will pick a winner in each category. If we don't receive more than 3 nominations in any category, we will go with the nominations we have. Also, you can nominate as much as you want for each category.

Also for all kinds of reasons, I am sticking to the 2006 time frame only. Too many issues if you go beyond that, these are awards for 2006, we don't operate on a fiscal year, but a calendar year

I will put together a broad selection of individuals to evaluate nominations and will then decide on the top three nominations in each category which will be announced no later than February 19. Among those nominations winners will be announced on February 25. Selection of each winner will be done by ballot, coming from no less than 9 bipartisan individuals. (note on individuals willing to help with the awards, contact me via pm, I will be contacting several individuals as well)

* - The USWKS Wrestling Academy is just a fun thing involving members of the USAWKS Wrestling Board. I just thought this would be fun and this in fact is not endorsed in any way by USAWKS Wrestling. It can be endorsed by those of us who are members and wish to participate though. I will make the commitment to print up certificates designating the award winners and mail them to the winner of each category.

The USAWKS Fan of the Year/The USAWKS Person of the Year - Aaron Sweazy, he'll travel anywhere and everywhere to watch some wrestling. He also got back on the mat for the first time since his battle with cancer last month at the FHSU open. The sport has helped keep him going through the roughest of times and at the same time he's made the wrestling community a better place to be around, as he is an inspiration for us all to keep going no matter what.

The Most Informative Post of the Year - Gonna have to go with the Swayz's 5000th post. It's destined for greatness.

Great stuff coming in, PLEASE REMEMBER WE ARE LOOKING AT 2006, NOT 2007. Thre have also been a couple of additions to the nominations as came in per request, I agree, they should have been in there.

This may require checking the archives but if that is the case, check them out. Also make your argument here, you can also send in your argument to me and I will make sure that every person casting a vote gets the information. This is not a popularity contest. There are a group of individuals that are highly active on the forums, or in their respective fields, that I have contacted. I have heard back from some of them, expect to hear back from more of them. After the nomination deadline has come and gone, we will then narrow each category down to 3 per category as per our thoughts. From there we will then vote on the top in each category and post it in conjunction with the Awards show date listed.

Could be done before the February 25th awarding date though...

I have added these categories, good picks, I had quite a few more nominations come in last night. For those getting the pm from me, I am wanting you to help in the voting, that way it isn't a single persons opinion. All of those pm'd are great choices to help. Now have 9 confirmed Judges, and nominations coming in by numerous people. If you have not pm’d me back and said, “Yes count me in.,” or something like that, you are not on the judges list. If anyone can think of other worthy judges let me know. I have heard from 3 potential judges with a “maybe,” and another 2 with a, “no I don’t have time.” I understand that and am fine. I still need to hear from about 14 more. If anyone would like to judge, ask me, I’ll tell you “yea” or “nea,” and some may want to nominate others for judges. BTW, the person nominated as a judge has to be a usawks message board member. Here is the current list, remember, judges will narrow these down to 3, and then will pick a winner in each category. If we don't receive more than 3 nominations in any category, we will go with the nominations we have. Also, you can nominate as much as you want for each category.

Also for all kinds of reasons, I am sticking to the 2006 time frame only. Too many issues if you go beyond that, these are awards for 2006, we don't operate on a fiscal year, but a calendar year

just a reminder, the final ballots will be sent to the judges this weekend, at which time we will announce the four finalists for each category, we will vote on those and they will be announced accordingly on the the day of the Oscars. Also remember, this is for 2006, not 2007. Anyone wanting to advocate for any particular nomination needs to do so on the message boards. There are 10 total judges now so we have a good representation to select the winners.

Best Kids Wrestler:
Logan Treaster- Not sure on weight, but has been winning majority of his matches. Young wrestler with big heart. Started coming on strong in 06. Won some big tournaments this year in 06 and I am sure wil finish strong this year.

Best Kids Female Wrestler:
Darian Gonzalez- Been watching this girl wrestle for a few years. Places top 2 consistently for the past year in open tournaments. Win or lose great attitude. KS Girls champion two years in a row(05/06). 2006 OK Girls State champion and 2 time girls national runner-up(05/06). Only lost to 2 girl wrestlers in last two years and both at nationals. Won more matches than lost in usawks open tournaments father not sure on exact record. Talked with her father to get info to vote cause was impressed with them both.

The rest of my votes were along the same lines as most of yours. Just varied with these and wanted to provide some backup because I believe these warrant it.

I had some late votes come in so I will be posting the final 4 today and pushing back the announcement until Sunday March 4, this will give me time to get all of the ballots counted, we have 12 voters so it will take a little time. Again, final 4 will be posted today as I am about done with the counting the current votes to narrow it down.

You know what is even more intriguing? That spring of 1932 instead of going 191 weight class in the NCAA Championships, Pete went into the Unlimited weight class and finished 3rd at the NCAAs only losing to Jack Riley of Northwestern who was the defending champion at that weight and would retain the title in 32 as well.
