Windy,

Normally a State Champion in wrestling would be the best ONE at their weight in their state of residence. It is watered down to call four wrestlers from the same weight State Champions. The best wrestlers may never wrestle each other because of the classifications. I would prefer a grand state tournament but it would make things easier to manage if we combined classes and reduced the number of state qualfiers. We are not preparing our youth for their adult future by making it "easier" to achieve a goal. In many cases more than 50% of the 5A and 6A wrestlers qualify for state. If they are only wrestling so they can qualify for state then things are really messed up. The message or lesson our youth need to be getting is that you work hard, prepare correctly, and make sacrifices you have a chance to achieve your goal. If you don't you have to figure out what to change to get there. It is okay for kids to learn what it is like to be disappointed and not get a reward "just for being there". Kids would work harder.

It is not a positive thing for Kansas when we have a four time state champion if they are not competitive with other state's champions.
