State Tournament Information We had great performances by our
guys at the very tough
Pratt Regional, with two wrestlers qualifying for state and five
others coming within a single victory from qualifying. With five
of the top ten ranked teams, this was clearly the toughest regional in
the state. Congratulations to Jake Gehring (3rd @112) and Austin
Ortiz (4th @ 145), and good luck to them next weekend at the state
championships!

Our season got off to a solid start as the varsity traveled to the Dual
Tournament in
El Dorado, where we finished second in our pool after
suffering a one point 37-36
loss to Augusta. We ended up third
overall after we defeated Rose Hill, the 2nd
place finisher in the
other pool, in a 39-33 decision. The match was tied at 33-33
going into the heavyweight match, when junior Bryce Worley, making his
first varsity start, secured the win for the Crusaders by pinning his
opponent!

Our first league dual found us facing the El Dorado Wildcats,
who were coming off of a first place finish in their Dual Tournament.
Once again, our boys battled to a tight finish, but unfortunately
came up just a little short in a 34-30 loss.

Next we traveled to Wellington to compete in our second tournament of the
season, and our only combined
Varsity/JV tournament, where several of our wrestlers had
success on the mat. In the varsity tournament, freshman Kyle Miller
won his first high school tournament, placing first at 119.
Joining Kyle on the medal stand were six teammates; since we were
open at four weights, this represented the bulk of our squad. Overall, Buhler
finished 6th out of 13 teams.

On December 17 we went to Andale to compete in our only
non-league dual. We were in complete control of the first dual, which
we won 60-9 against the
new team from Maize South. The second dual was another story, as we
fell 54-21 to the #1 ranked Andale Indians.

I our first competition after the holiday break, we avenged an earlier
loss with a 39-34 victory over Augusta. At the El Dorado Team Dual tournament
on December 5, in our first dual of the season, we suffered a close 36-37
loss to them. Augusta has
been a tough team for several years, and this is our first victory over
them since the 2004-05 season. For complete
varsity results, click here.
January 9 found us at what might be our toughest tournament of the
season. The Maize tournament was organized as a single round-robin
pool for each weight class, with six schools competing. Of those
six schools, three were ranked in the top 10 in 6A( Garden City #4,
Wichita N/W #5 & Maize #10) while another was #1 ranked Andale.
It's safe to say that there were no easy matches for our guys this
weekend!
Mulvane came to town for Senior Night, where they took an early lead
then held on for a 37-30 victory over our Crusaders.

Jake Gehring led the team at the Clearwater Invitational on January 16,
finishing in second place after a 4-3 loss in the championship match.
Jake came in as the #4 seed, but defeated the #1 seed 5-3 to make it to
the finals. Kyle Miller avenged his loss two days earlier to
Mulvane's Caleb White in solid fashion (10-4), but a 2-1 loss in the
consolation semifinals left him one win short of finishing in the final
four. Michael Scheel was the other Crusader medalist, finishing in
4th place at 140 lbs.

Our league duals continued on January 21 as we traveled to #3
ranked Andover Central. With five open weights, we started in a
0-30 hole, not the place you want to be going against a strong opponent.
In the contested matches, Jake Gehring started us out with a
5-4 victory. We didn't have another victory until Austin Ortiz,
wrestling up a weight class at 152 as he works for league honors, won
his match in a spectactular throw. Our other two wins came in
the top three weight classes, with Dylan Young winning by fall and
Bryce Worley taking the decision. Mitch Wiens nearly made it 3 for
3, with a closely contested overtime loss.
On January 22, we traveled to our first 2-day event of the
season at the Bob Kuhn
Prairie Classic Wrestling Tournament at Hays High School. As always,
this was a good, competitive tournament where
we got the chance to see some teams for the first and only time during the
regular season.
With only eight wrestlers on our roster for this
tournament, we were working at a serious handicap from a team
standpoint. We finished in 15th place out of 20 teams; however, we
were only five points away from finishing three spots higher.
Three of our wrestlers finished on the medal stand: Austin Ortiz (4th),
Kyle Miller (4th) & Michael Scheel (6th). Two others came an
agonizing single loss away from joining their teammates, Jake Gehring on
a one point loss and Mitch Wiens on an overtime loss.

Our Crusaders had a strong showing at Garden Plain on January30, where
we claimed the second place overall and placed three wrestlers at the top
of the medal stand. Jake Gehring (112), Michael Scheel (140) and
Austin Ortiz (145) were all undefeated in their weight classes, while
Kyle Miller (119), Dylan Young (189) and Mitch Wiens (215) claimed the
second spot with a single loss. This was the second to the last
tournament of the season for the varsity prior to regionals - a great
time to start turning it on!
Our final regular season varsity tournament brought more success for
both the
team and the individual wrestlers. Out of 22 teams, Buhler
finished in second
place behind the tournament champions Smoky Valley. Four Crusader
wrestlers
made it into the finals, where all four finished in second place:
Jake Gehring (112), Kyle Miller (119), Michael Scheel (140) and Austin
Ortiz (145).
After a tough tournament last week where, Colt Wray made a strong
rebound as he
upset the #1 seed in the first round of the tournament. In perhaps
the most
pleasant surprise of the weekend, Danny Gaeddert, wrestling up a weight
class,
defeated the #2 seed on his way to a third place finish at 152 lbs!
